Be careful guys!
A woman went boating one Sunday taking with her some cans of coke which she put into the refrigerator of the boat. On Monday she was taken to the
hospital and placed in the Intensive Care Unit. She died on Wednesday. The
autopsy concluded she died of Leptospirosis. This was traced to the can of
coke she drank from, not using a glass. Tests showed that the can was
infected by dried rat urine and hence the disease Leptospirosis. Rat urine
contains toxic and deadly substances. It is highly recommended to thoroughly
wash the upper part of soda cans before drinking out of them. The cans are
typically stocked in warehouses and transported straight to the shops
without being cleaned. A study at NYCU showed that the tops of soda cans are more contaminated than public toilets (i e.) full of germs and bacteria. So
wash them with water before putting them to the mouth to avoid any kind of
fatal accident. Please forward this message to all the people you care
about. (I JUST DID!)

Glad I always use a glass, what an eye opener.
Yes it's good to wash your cans, but the story is fake guys, which you can see if you go read the snopes link posted above.

Even if this story is a fake, I do remember watching an episode of Oprah years ago. She bought a can of soda pop out of a vending machine, and had labroratory tests run on the top of the can. The list of harmful bacteria was long and startling! I don't remember all the details now, but I do remember even the person doing the tests at the lab being shocked and appalled by how filthy the can really was.

I remember this going around and thinking it sounded extreme and finding out pretty quickly that it was. But the lesson is there, and honestly, it should be an obvious thing to wash the can first. You're putting your mouth and tongue all over it! I'm not a germophobe by any means but I've always done that.
I also have always been in the habit of doing a little swishing of the beverage before drinking it, especially if it's outdoors...one of my best friends in high school got stung in the roof her mouth by a bee that was in her soda can. Scary stuff! She could barely close her mouth, the roof of her mouth swelled up so badly.

Same sort of thing happened to me once.....with a can of coke. An Australian bulldog ant got on it and bit my lip......I was out of action for a good two hours......extremely painful.
