View Full Version : STAR'S surgery-- She's home!

Well, Star goes in early Monday morning to have up to 6 teeth removed and also get the growth on her paw pad removed. I'm a little anxious, because of her age and all, and would appreciate some good vibes & prayers for her. I think her teeth may be bothering her more than I thought, as she's not readily taking treats, and she threw up yesterday. We pryed her mouth open, and that back molar looks especailly nasty. I hope she'll feel better afterwards.

:D Star's home! I called at 2:30 & she was still in having her dental work. I guess she got scheduled for the afternoon shift. We had to wait till after 5:30 to get her. Everything went very well - the vet decided that only her cracked molar needed to be removed (which surprised me, he told me she had up to 6 teeth coming out). Her teeth are nice & white again! And they removed the growth thingy on her paw pad. We just need to keep her from licking it too much over the next few days. They sent us home with plenty of antibiotics & pain meds for the next 10 days. She was very glad to see us! Still a bit wobbly, and I can't give her much water or food till tomorrow, even though she's very thirsty. Sherman was glad to see her too. I washed all her blankies, she has a nice soft bed waiting for her. It's so good to have her back home. :)

Oh Star, you are a very loved lady! Only ONE tooth out, rather than 6, whoopee! Can't wait to see your dazzling white smile, te hee.
Pat, glad to hear such great news. Did they say anything about putting a sock on the paw to keep her from licking it? You and JoJoe must be thrilled to have THAT behind you. Hooray!

Sandra, we keep a set of sled dog booties for just such occasions. She seems to be leaving it alone, at least for now, but when I take her out, on goes the boot. We also have a Bite-Not collar as insurance. I think she's most upset because I'm not letting her drink gallons of water like she wants to. The vet said to give her small amounts or she might throw up. She had a trachea tube during the surgery, they said her throat is probably a little sore. Don't need any more irritation from something going the wrong direction! I will snap a pic of her dazzling white smile as soon a she starts smiling again! :D

Welcome Home, "Smiley"! :)
And just what bit of magic are you going to use to KEEP her from licking that paw!?
Will the Bite-Not straight-jacket manage to keep her mouth away from the paw?
I fear the Mighty Tongue will manage to find that paw in minutes if some form
of isolation
or covering isn't employed (or you Duct Tape her mouth shut! :p )
Good Luck!

LOL! I sure hope we don't have to resort to duct tape! I'm hoping the Bite Not & sled bootie will hold off that mighty tongue overnight. He did not put in any stitches, and said not to wrap it up so it gets air. She's pretty well konked out on the couch right now, I guess we'll deal with tomorrow, tomorrow.

Glad to hear Star's teeth cleaning and removal went okay. Is the lump they removed from her paw being sent in to have it checked? Isn't Dr. Freeman the greatest. Jack went in to have his stitches out this afternoon - I forgot that Star was there. All Jack's little "holes" are mending great.

Diana, I'm so glad to hear Jack is on the mend! Yes, we like Dr. Freeman very much. :p
I asked if the lump was sent out, and the vet tech told me not in this case, he thinks it was a corn or something like that. After is got all red & swollen 2 weeks ago, it shrank back down to almost nothing, smaller than it's been for several years. I'm glad they removed it, as it was really bothering her when it was swollen. I looked at the site tonight, it's a little hole in her pad. It looks wet, but it's not oozing. I'll keep checking it.
It was a nice surprise that the bill was quite a bit lower than I expected! I still have enough left to send Sherman in to have his toofies cleaned, too!

Oh yes, the spring shed is well underway!
Star is doing alright. She kept rubbing her face with her paw yesterday, I think maybe it hurt a little where they took out her tooth. She's taking pain meds & an antibiotic for ten days, and is playing "Jaws of steel" with me. it takes quite a bit of convincing to get her to open up so I can get a pill in the back of her mouth far enough that she won't spit it out. After a few minutes she gives up & lets me, silly girl. i'm not too sure what's going on with her paw, she only seems to lick it sometimes. It doesn't look too different now thatn before the surgery, I'm hoping as it heals the swelling will go down.

I'm glad that Star made it through the surgery ok (and even better that she only had to lose one tooth!). I hope she continues to recover, oh, and she should tell her mom that we need new pics of her and her brother. ;)
