Dr. Nielson said, "so far that is still looking good"! He feels comfortable enough with it that we can go to every-other-week checkups now! The sutures may take a while yet before they are gone, he said it can take months.

Her next check is two weeks from today.

I have a video of her playing.. it seems to work best with the newest version of Windows Media player so I hope it will work! She was playing in the kiddie pool, and Tommy was trying to figure out what to do about this young hellion usurping his pool :D.

And yesterday after playing more in the pool (she likes to stick her whole face in the water)

I am so happy to hear this latest update, Jess!! Not only is it wonderful that this beautiful girl has been cured, in a way, it has healed some things for you too. You know what I mean. What a blessing that you adopted this girl and the events that have taken place are able to give you enough reassurance to move on with greater strength than you have been able to experience for awhile. Thank you so much everyone. Today I started reading through this thread from the beginning, just watching the story unfold and the emotionalism of it, and I'm impacted again by everyone's prayers, empathy, words of comfort and encouragement. What a beautiful group of people you all are.

No water for Tasha, except for drinking! I should have added this second one too, as it has more of Tommy boy in it :D. The neighbor was mowing so that's the noisy mower you hear. When I fill the pool Tasha is right there lapping up water out of the hose, she loves drinking it as it comes out. But she has no interest in getting into it!

http://www.mydeo.com/videorequest.asp?XID=20554&CID=96276

Tommy is just not quite sure what to make of her splishing and splashing in "his" pool ;). I think I need to get a bigger pool!

Four weeks ago from today Raven had her radical excision of her cancer with partial jawbone removal. She didn't have a recheck today (next check is May 25, next Friday), but her mouth continues to heal and there continues to be no sign of recurrence. This is the site today, the edges have become a bit sharper as the tissues have settled and the sutures more dissolved but it looks to be healing very nicely.

And as usual when I have her out waiting for the panting to get going ;) I took a few other shots.

Raven had another wonderful checkup today. It is really looking more and more thoroughly healed, Dr. Nielson was very happy with it. He wants to see her back in a month now (June 22), to ensure things are still going well. He said he wants to keep seeing her until it looks completely and totally normal. The sutures are mostly dissolved now, can't even really see them.

I spent some of the visit talking about a behavioral issue. She has always been a bit anxious being left but after her last surgery she got drastically worse. She now has severe separation anxiety, she will howl and cry and panic, drool all over herself and try to get out of her crate or the room if I block her in my room. She actually did manage to get out of my room last time I went to get groceries and I could hear her barking and crying when I pulled into the garage.

I explained to him that my comings and goings are low-key, I don't make a fuss when I leave, I don't make a fuss when I get back. I explained how this issue became severe since her last surgery. I had suspected it had a lot to do with my extreme anxiety during the time when her life hung in the balance. He said that week, I brought her in Monday for the consultation and had to leave her, and then Friday brought her in for the surgery and had to leave her. Both times my emotions were very extreme, understandably so, since it was a life and death situation, but she picked up on that, and sensing that and then having me leave traumatized her. I told him since March when I found this I had been in a heightened state of anxiety and I know that she probably picked up on that as well. He seemed very understanding and said that I am probably only just beginning to 'relax' about all of this. After all, he said, he has seen more not make it from malignant oral cancers than ones who do, and he said even his nerves were on edge about it.

I got a month's supply of Clomipramine, a tricyclic anti-anxiety medication for dogs. He says it has been shown to help a lot along with the desensitizing techniques that I am already working on. It's not a permanent thing, just as an aid while I am working on desensitizing. It is not a tranquilizer, must be given every day like a human antidepressant. I'm hoping that will help her. It makes it very difficult for me to get out and do much when I know she is at home panicking and freaking out. She has never been destructive but I will get home and her chest will be covered in drool, she's huffing and her heart racing. Hopefully, we can get her through this and she will be able to relax and enjoy a chew toy or bully stick while I'm away.

I can understand her maybe picking up on your nervousness & anxiety.

Sweet Raven, I'm so glad you had a good post-surgical report. You look radiant in your photo. I hope the clomipramine works for your anxiety. I can't imagine how hard it must have been for you to be separated from mom. She loves you so much and we all do too. HUG for you and for the T's and mom too. Where do Tommy & Tasha stay when you're gone? Does being around them help her at all? With time, hopefully this can be overcome.

They can have run of the house but I have generally been gating them in the room with her in hopes it would help, however it doesn't seem to make any difference. Her fear/anxiety seems to involve me. Now she is not a clingy pup, if I'm home and she is running the house she is often off in another room or area of the house and I'm chasing her down to make sure she's not getting into something :p. But being closed off somewhere with me out of sight seems to trigger her fear of being left. Hopefully the meds will help along with working with her. I've been feeding her gated in my room away from me and the T's. She eats fine and has been relaxed with that so I'm doing that every day to give her a good experience with being confined with me out of sight.

I had read about a D.A.P. diffuser and collars too, and may try that as well. http://vetmedicine.about.com/cs/behavior/a/dogbehaviorprob.htm

Another stunning pic! She's just glowing with happiness. I'm so glad everything is progressing nicely.

And, I feel I'm sort of an expert on separation anxiety now after all I've been through with Dasher. Pm me and I'll tell you how I handle it. He's not been on any meds in months and he's totally changed now. He used to get between my legs while I was putting on my shoes. Now, he just lays on my bed. Things will get better. Your anxiety was a perfectly normal reaction to all of this.

That smile of her just brightens anyone's day, doesn't it?

A lot of shelter dogs have S.A.... usually with time it goes away. Atleast it did with Simba and Nala. They couldn't care less if they are left at home. :p

Raven God Bless You, he sure answered alot of prayers that is for sure. You look more and more beautiful, such a wonderful smile, it just melts my heart!!!! Try not to worry to much about the anxiety, whether shelter dog or not has nothing to do with it, its from the trauma she went through, she will come out of it, with the love and the way you work with her, she will go back to normal once she knows everything is really okay.
Give her a very big hug. :D

Oh Raven - you beautiful, happy, smiling, kissy dog you!!!

I guess its only natural for you to be a bit anxious after all you've been through sweetheart.

When I leave my two I set them "tasks" like hiding treats for them to find - that way me leaving them turns into a fun thing and most of the time they don't even notice I've gone :D I also leave a radio on.

Glad to hear the surgery apparently got the nasty cells out.

If leaving for a few hours, I give mine rawhide chips to munch on. Usually their stomachs over rule their separation anxieties. For the most part all I have to say is "pen-pen" to mine, and they run into their pen- waiting for their treats. ;)

You could try something similar to car training for the separation anxiety. Pretend that you are leaving. Exit out of the house for 20 seconds and then come back in and let puppy out of the kennel. Repeat a couple times a day. Then extend the length of departure to 1 min, 5 mins etc. If nothing else you get to visit the neighbors a lot. :D

Sorry I have not updated in awhile! Raven has been doing wonderfully, and she had her final recheck yesterday. She's been given the official all clear.. no more rechecks scheduled. Of course by now I felt we were going to be just fine, but it was another milestone to get the official word from Dr. Nielson. He hugged her and told her she was such a good baby and told her he loved her. She loves him too, gave him all kinds of kisses and wags :). I made a thread with some pictures of her I took this morning here:

On April 20, 2007, Raven went in for the surgery that would be the difference between life and death for her. The next day when she came home after the surgery, the focus became watching and waiting to see if it would succeed in being curative, or if the cancer would come back. At first it was day by day, then week by week and soon month by month. Now she has reached the landmark where there is no more tracking of time, but just years of love and living ahead in the celebration of life, something she has taught me to do in a way I never did before. She is an inspiration and brings joy to my life in so many ways, and not a day goes by, a single one, when I do not remember how so many of you were along this journey with us, your prayers and support and help a miracle in itself.

I thought I would share some new photos of her here, and a simple video I made that just shows how happy she is all the time.

Nothing beats a happy ending! Love that girl. She is so pretty. I loved the video and the music was so fitting. I have to say she looks beautiful in that new collar too. She is so bouncy in the video. She makes me think of Tori. I know I told you that Raven and Tori would probably have a blast together but the more I think about it and after having Sammi here it is Sammi and Raven that would have a blast. They seem to have the same kind of energy and sweetness. Please give our little miracle girl a big hug from me.

Love ya, Raven! :)

Wow, quite a story! I just read through all 40 pages and have never seen this thread before today. Amazing and uplifting. I'm so happy for you that you have Raven with you, a year later and will have her for at least a dozen more!
My cat Tiger has been battling S.C.C. in his nasal passages since it was first discovered back in July and it has been a difficult time. But he, like Raven is a fighter and I think he will pull through too. Thank you so much for posting today because otherwise I would not have found this inspirational and wonderful thread. :)
p.s. Raven is absolutely beautiful!!

What a wonderful entry! Brings tears to my eyes and joy to my heart. I can't watch the video here at work because it's blocked but I'll be sure to see it on my days off. She is such a happy, beautiful dog. I'm glad she's given you so much joy.

Great pictures, thank you so much for sharing!

Instead of a Cancer-vivor, we can say she's a Can-fur-reviver!
