Oh, Jess, she is truly a black beauty. She looks like she has such a great personality. :) I'm sorry she's going through all of this, although I think it's harder for you than her. I really will be praying hard for her tomorrow. I'm off all day, so I'll be able to focus on sending good thoughts!

Jess, I can't believe how fast it's grown back :( I know you'll be glad to have it gone. I pray everything will be a success and that she's home safe and sound soon. I love that pic that Ginger's mom said she loved. I hope one day to meet you and all your dogs. Raven really looks like she enjoys life. I pray that she gets to grow old with you.

Jess, I love that photo of her romping around, and the one of her looking at you. I wanna kiss that sweet face! She's such a pretty little girl. She's so full of life and has got such a great spirit.

I am leaving in a few minutes with her. The surgery will be done later this morning I believe. My stomach is such a wreck! I gave her a bit of beef broth for breakfast this morning since she can't eat anything (vet said drinking is okay).

She does this thing I call "sleepy grumbles" where when she is snuggling in to sleep she does little sighs and moans for awhile until she's asleep. It's hard to explain but she has done it since she was a little baby. Long drawn out grumbles and noises for maybe a good 2-3 minutes until she's sleeping. She was doing that this morning as she resettled next to me in bed. She likes to sleep cuddled right next to me. I will miss hearing her sleepy grumbles today so much. But I have to keep remembering we are making our main assault on this cancer today and we must win.

Tommy and Tasha are being very good pups. Tommy hasn't really shown any difference in behavior, Tasha has been watching me closer as she does when she picks up that I'm anxious. Raven is just filled with the joy of living! Bless her.

I thank God I am blessed with such a beautiful community of people in Pet Talk. Everyone's support and encouragement and prayers have helped get me through each day. And now I'll stop rambling.

I kept watching her puppy video I made last night. It makes me feel even stronger she is going to come out of this and we with both be stronger than ever.

Raven is at the vet's now. They told me to call around 2 to check on her and of course they have my number too.. stomach is in knots. My vet talked to me a bit about the specialist, that he has had a lot of good results with this surgery and he feels it gives her the best chance. He said the specialist taught surgery at the University of Minnesota Veterinary College and is very knowledgeable. He did not sugercoat though that it is a very nasty cancer, but he feels she has a good chance with this surgery.

I will update again when I learn how she is doing. My stomach is roiling so bad I can't eat a thing! Thank you for your continued prayers for my baby girl.

University of Minnesota Veterinary College is where they sent Jimmy's bladder stones too. He was a case study there for a month, well he wasn't, his stones were. They figured out what was wrong with him when no one could. I think that people from there are VERY good at what they do.

K9Soul, I just watched the youtube video of your Raven ....it had me all teared up at the part when the song says "take my hand" and the photo of Raven's Paw in your hand. It's a beautiful video.
I just saw and read through this thread for the 1st time, I'm sorry I hadn't seen it before this...it sounds as though your dog is in the best hands right now, and that this surgeon is a good one. I know how hard it is to have a dog in the hospital, watching the clock and just wanting them to come home. I hope that you get good news today and that Raven recovers completely. She is lucky to have such a great Mom who cares about her so much.

Raven made it through surgery and is doing well. She has been given pain medicine and she will be staying overnight so they can watch and control any bleeding. I didn't get to talk to the vet himself yet to find more details about how much they had to take out but I left a message for him to call me back so I can find more of that out. I sure miss my little girl.

Ok I just talked to my vet.

He said the surgery went well and the specialist (he referred to him as "Cal") was very pleased with how it looked afterwards. Cal removed quite a bit of bone and soft tissue and two of her teeth, and they may need to remove another tooth yet. The next step, if the cancer shows up again (please God forbid) would be to take a significant portion of her jaw off.. but we will pray and pray that that does not happen. She will be getting rechecks once a week for awhile. He said right now she is awake and moving around already and is looking good. I am to call at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow and he is pretty certain as long as everything is still looking good that she can come home.

Your support and prayers have been phenomenal. I only ask you please please keep her in your prayers the next few weeks that the cancer will not return. That she heals and that this will be the end of this horrible nightmare. Thank you all.

You know, I was sitting at my desk eating lunch today and thinking about you Jess and precious Raven. I started crying into my salad and just when I wiped away the tears a coworker came in. When asked what was the matter, I just said, I'm OK. How can I possibly explain that "I'm hurting for someone whom I've never met and lives miles away who has her precious pet in for sir jury and I've never met the pet either and I only know them from a website called Pet Talk"..... It just wouldn't fly and that's why I've never told anyone around me about PT.

My baby girl is HOME! She's a bit more subdued than normal (who wouldn't be?) but she is looking great, tail wagging and so happy to be home. I had to go out and take some pictures for everyone. It is hard to really look closely at her mouth, I got a brief look but she is not eager to have her mouth held open right now and I do not blame her! It'll be easier to see when she pants.

She is on antibiotics and pain medicine and soft diet, I picked up some EVO RM canned for her. Also I'm supposed to flush the area every day with some warm water, they gave me syringes for that. She goes in for her first recheck next Friday. Today will be a quiet and restful day for my girl. And now on to the pictures. It's been rainy and dark out and I was trying to hurry and get them before the rain started again.

Poor baby she is really so exhausted, and for the first time since all this came up seems a little depressed. Not that I expect her to be bouncing with joy after such a major surgery, but it still hurts just to see her not feeling as well. When she yawns I can definitely tell the difference.. her lower lip folds over into her mouth where it used to stretch over the bone that was taken out. Even in the pic I posted earlier of her mouth, if you look close you can see how it it puckers and indents a bit from the bone that was taken. Tommy and Tash are taking it all in stride. Tash is more relaxed now, she had a bit of a rough morning because of thunderstorms (she's terrified of them). It's a rainy cloudy day and perfect for everyone to just take it easy and rest.

In my tenure here at Pet Talk, I've come to care very deeply for the people and their pets and here I am crying again.......for someone and her pet that I've never met.

What a community we have here!!!

My cheque was mailed today Jess.

DITTO
I have a pet-friendly team at work - between 9 nurses, we have 7 dogs, 12 cats, a bunny, birds and fish. I have told Raven's story to them, and asked that they pray; I've just started by saying "I have a friend whose dog has cancer in her mouth..." How could I explain to these people I work with every day, that this is someone I know only from a pet Web site? I didn't even try.

Welcome home, beautiful Raven! I have been thinking about you all day and I thought I would check in tonight for the latest update. I liked the photo of Tash, Tommy and Raven resting on the bed. You all take good care. I hope the recheck on Friday brings a good report. [[hugs]]

How is Miss Raven feeling today? :)

The old Raven is BACK! LOL She's full of fire and energy today. I took her for a little jaunt to Petco and she was her normal crazy self, practically killing herself wanting to go meet everyone. I went to the store and bought some yogurt and canned pumpkin and tuna and salmon etc to give her some variety in her soft diet. I'm supposed to use a syringe and flush out that area after she eats. She takes her medicine easily just tossing it in her food. Tasha keeps sniffing at her face and mothering her.

The main "problem" is I had to take up all her hard chew toys, Nylabones and such, no bully sticks. And she's really wanting to chew. She's also been licking her bed and my comforter a lot, I'm guessing a response to her mouth bothering her. But it still looks good this morning, no swelling or redness or drainage. She's snoozing away now, laying next to Tash :).

Someone mentioned liking the pic of all three on the bed, Tash's face peeking at me in that one always makes me laugh :). We are certainly all feeling more relieved today!

Kfamr
04-22-2007, 12:03 PM

The T's are going to be jealous of her special diet. :p What a sweetie Tasha is for mothering her like that. :)

K9soul

Rachel, I really think the surgeon did an excellent job too.

I thought I'd post a couple before and after pics that show it more closely. I used a red line on the before pics to kind of show what portion of her lower jaw was removed. But really when you look at her panting, you notice the canine tooth missing more than anything, you really don't even realize there's a chunk of her jaw missing there unless you look close.

The surgeon actually isn't a part of my vet's office, he was called in as a consultant type basis, and he charged my vet's office (which of course we paid as part of the cost). I never met or spoke with him, but my vet referred to him as "Cal" and told me a bit about him and how he taught surgery many years at the University of Minnesota. He did the surgery there in my vet's office. My vet, Dr. Nielson, said he could have tried the surgery but he is not familiar with it like Cal is and he was not going to go experimenting.

She's been enjoying her yummy food but doesn't appreciate having the area flushed with a syringe afterwards. She always gives me this look like "was that really necessary?"

I probably mentioned it but her first recheck is Friday morning this week. Otherwise I may be quiet for awhile as I desperately need to get to catching up on work now! I do still have that fear of seeing it come back, but I have more of a feeling this time that won't happen.

Thank you guys. I went through a period of intense paranoia looking at the healing tissues this morning getting myself worked up to thinking that might be it coming back. So I showed up at the vet's as he was pulling in for the day LOL. He says it is really too early to tell, but that right NOW it appears to be normal healing tissue. She will be checked every week and if she goes a month post surgery without any signs he thinks we will be able to breathe easy. I think the next week or two will be the hardest for me anxiety-wise. I am out every day after she plays, having her sit and taking pictures when she looks up with her tongue to the side so that I can really zoom in and study it close on the computer for any changes or suspicions. I have to admit I've gotten some pretty head shots of her while waiting for good mouth shots.

Her front three incisors on her right have sunk down a tad lower than the two on the left, I suppose from the partial bone removal destabilizing it, but it is really not noticeable, I doubt anyone else just looking at her would notice.

Her next recheck is in a week (same day/time). Thank you for keeping her in your prayers. She is not out of the woods yet.

Thank you so very much for the continued thoughts and prayers. I can't help but feel that this week is the big one, if she gets through this week and Friday's checkup still looking good, I will feel more able to take a deep breath and really believe we probably beat it. Her mouth and tissues inside change a bit daily as they settle and heal, and sometimes it is hard not to panic at a bit of lumpy tissue here or a reddish tissue there. But for the most part I still feel it looks pretty consistent with how it did this weekend. I can easily see the sutures in her mouth now and the margins of the surgery as the swelling has gone down. She doesn't seem to need her pain medicine now and she is getting close to finishing her antibiotics. She has (dissolvable) sutures in the back of the wound area and up front under her lip.

I'm attaching a few close-up shots of her mouth. I will attach them because they are very close up, she was panting after having run and they are a bit drooly, so I didn't want to force anyone to look close who didn't want to ;). The first two are from the 28th and the last from yesterday. It appears the same this morning (which is good!)

ETA: Here's a prettier picture too from yesterday

For so many days I was not sure if that bit of swelling and reddened tissue on the edge of the wound margin would begin to grow and look cancerous (the way it happened after her first surgery) or if it would go down and improve. I felt it would probably happen one way or another this week, so I have been watching it like a hawk with my heart hammering every time I looked. Well yesterday it finally seemed to turn a corner.. for the better! I am feeling more (cautiously) optimistic finally. If the vet is pleased with tomorrow's check I will feel even better. I will attach a photo from April 30 (Monday) when it was reddened and more swollen and I was so worried about it, and then the shots I got yesterday where it is definitely improved! The 'stuff' in the wound are the sutures dissolving and losing their color, it looks a bit like hair or plastic stuck there but it is the sutures dissolving. Feeling so much more hopeful now!

We are back from Raven's second recheck! Dr. Nielson always greets her as "Happy Raven" ;). He concurs with my opinion that so far, it is looking good! He still cautioned we need to give a bit more time before we for sure say it is all gone and not coming back, but he feels very optimistic!

I mentioned the reddened/swelling I saw a few days ago that had worried me. He explained that post-surgery, especially in the mouth, it takes awhile for the blood supply to return to the area and then it looks really red like that for a bit. That is why in a way it came to look worse than her first couple days home. He said the next phase will be the dead tissues sloughing off, so it still may change in appearance for awhile yet.

Her next recheck is next Friday morning again. He always tells her he loves her before we leave :). So that is where we are at!

Kay, oh yes, Raven had to tell me again! I'll be shooting you a PM in a bit :).
