Today we had Queenie euthanized. She was in kidney failure. The vet estimated her to be 17 to 18 years old. Not bad for a three-legged sheep dog.
She spent her days protecting my son ... from low flying geese, airplanes, his friends, and the shadows of clouds. She herded everything, including my son and his friends. She would chase a ball with the fastest of the four-legged pack anyday.
My son picked her out at death row at animal control when he was three years old. He passed up all the pretty dogs and chose the old, fat, three-legged one. He looked up at me with those big brown eyes full of tears and whispered, "But Mommy ... no one else will love a doggie with only three legs." She came home. And she never, ever forgot the debt she owed him.
Godspeed, Queenie of the Green Beanie Weanies. We will never forget the debt we owe you, old girl.

This got to me, too. Bless your son and you for letting him have her. He feels the way I do about different or older dogs. I'm so glad that Queenie had a full, loving life. Now she's herding all the RB dogs, having a grand time.

What a sweet story, what a sweet son! I hope he is handling the loss well. Queenie obviously lived a very long life and, in the end, a good life.
T He looked up at me with those big brown eyes full of tears and whispered, "But Mommy ... no one else will love a doggie with only three legs."
Bless your son for that and bless you for raising him to see things that way. Queenie Beanie was one special girl and I believe she is now running at RB on all fours legs again. (((hugs)))

You've obviously raised your son with the perfect open mind towards animals. I pray that this world is full of children like you and your son.
Tears were streaming down my face when I read what your son said to you at the shelter.
It's not too often that a child can hand pick their very own guardian angel!
Rest Easy Queenie.
Your time here on earth by be over for now, but you will forever be "on watch" for your special boy here on earth.

Twisterdog, I am so sorry that your Queenie Beanie has left you. What happy day, though, when your son picked her out and you guys brought her home. Your story is so inspiring. Our kids do learn from us, and will grow up to be terrific animal lovers, just like us, because they learned from the best, US!!!
You will both be in my thoughts and prayers.

Rest in peace, and play hard at the Rainbow Bridge. Hey, Beanie girl, I hear there are lots of sheep up there at the bridge to herd! You have a good time up there, okay?

Thank you, everyone.
Very strange morning this was. Queenie has always slept right by my side of the bed, and every morning when I reach over to turn the alarm clock off, she sits up and sticks her nose up by the clock to be petted. This morning I turned the alarm off and went to pet her ... first time in twelve years, no cold nose waiting.
We buried her last night under the lilac bush, with a tennis ball.
