I know dogs get spayed all the time but I'm still very worried. Please just keep her in your thoughts tomorrow, thanks. I'll be at work all day, but I'll update when I get home.

I just went through it with Raven last month. I was worried sick and fretting so I know how miserable it is and no matter how 'routine' it is it is still an invasive surgery and still scary. Keva will be in my thoughts and prayers tomorrow. What I kept telling myself is "It'll all be over soon." Just keep that in mind if/when you feel anxious about it. ((hugs))

Just don't worry if she's a little punky for a couple days. My Sophie was spayed at 5 months, she was quiet and sort of dopey for a day (the narcs during surgery) and not quite herself, but by day 3-4 she was good as new.

Positive thoughts going out for that pretty little girl. I am sure she will be fine, but it is perfectly normal to worry about our babies when we leave them for any type of surgery. Hope your day goes fast, and you don't spend too much time worrying.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes for Keva. I'm afraid I have bad news. She couldn't get spayed today. They did a blood test to make sure she's ok to be put under and she failed it. Her white blood cell count is high, the only reason they could give me for this was she has an infection. I have no idea where or what caused this infection. :(

She threw up a little bit on the way there and I told them that but I figured it was just because she hadn't eaten (they told me not to feed her after 10:00). Her temperature was normal. She has been acting completely fine previous to this. I took her out to potty when I got home and she peed/pooped and it was normal. Then about 10 minutes ago I took her out and she had diarrhea. I don't know what is wrong with her. :( She's on clavamox to hopefully clear up the infection. I feel terrible because I dropped her off on my way to work and when they called I couldn't come and get her until I got off work, so she had to stay there all day.

:(
Sorry Keva got sick -
but I'll bet she'd be happy as a clam if she knew what she missed.

As for "feelin bad" she had to stay at the White Coat's Place all day ---
it was good practice for the next time.
As long as she didn't practice her version of the Yukon Death Howl,
learning that she gets to go HOME with Mom AFTER a visit to Doc's Place
is very good training.

Hoping for better luck on the next try!

Keva acts fine...she's eating/drinking, playful, etc....I'm not fine. I made the mistake of reading all the things that a high white blood cell count can mean (cancer, etc.). :( I hope its just an infection. Nebo threw up this morning too, just bile, he does that sometimes so I'm not sure if that's related or not, he also acts fine.

I've never heard for huskies having abnormally high white blood cell counts as a breed thing, Nebo's had his blood tested a few times and its never been high.

Too much knowledge isn't necessarily a good thing. ;) I know that you are a good doggie mom and wanted to be able to do whatever you could for your pup, but you may just be worrying unnecessarily. I'm sorry to hear this Amy, but try not to get too worried. There are a VAST number of things that can cause elevated white counts, from scary things (which I seriously doubt) to something as simple as a UTI, and even sometimes high stress level can elevate it. It somewhat depends on how elevated, but if it was something shockingly high I imagine your vet would be doing more testing and worrying about it. Please try not to worry. Look at it as a headache if you can. You can look up headaches and find some seriously scary things that cause them, but more than likely it is nothing like that and most headaches are minor and temporary without devastating cause.

You and Keva will be in my thoughts. I'm glad to hear she is acting well. That's a prime indication that she's doing just fine! Give her and Nebo some hugs and kisses for me :)

A little update again. Yesterday (sunday) evening she was running in the yard playing with Nebo. I was out with them, I'm not sure exactly what happened, but I think she went to run under the deck and she slammed into either the wooden post of the deck or a rock under the deck. All I know is that she started screaming her little head off and she was holding up one leg, I had to crawl under the deck to get her out. :(

After she calmed down she seemed ok, I can move the leg around and she doesn't act like it hurts, and there's no swelling. She's a bit of a drama queen so I didn't know how bad she hurt herself, Nebo has ran into things in the yard before and acted like that then been fine later. I thought she had stopped limping that night, but maybe I just couldn't tell, because when I got home from work tonight I noticed she's limping. She can put weight on it ok, but she just limps. She acts normal, playful, eating ok, etc. I'm actually having a hard time keeping her calm she wants to run but I don't want her to hurt herself more.

The vets are closed tonight and I'm not sure if I can get her in there tomorrow either, I have a really busy day scheduled at work. She has an appointment on Wednesday to get spayed. I have a feeling that's not going to happen again, but we'll see. So if I can't get her in tomorrow, I'm going to have her leg/shoulder (I'm not sure which is hurt) x-rayed on wednesday. As well as a blood test again to see if her white blood count is back to normal, and if everything is ok with that and her leg, then to get spayed too. So if you could please keep her in your thoughts and maybe say a prayer that she will be ok, I would appreciate it.

Note to self: Gotta remember to duck!

:D

I think someone just doesn't want to go in for the Sir Jury *Zippur*! :p

Being a Drama Queen must be a Husky trait ...
reminds me of Shadow (Husky/Shepherd, RB :( ) when she broke her back toe ...

She played that Woe IS Me tune for MONTHS!
She'd be trotting along on all 4 happy as a clam till someone would ask her
"How's you paw, Shadow?"

OMG! Her reaction was almost instant - pull up a paw and *hobble* on 3!
Her problem was she lost track of WHICH ONE was supposed to be the injured one!
She lost her sympathizers when she had to try *limping* on each paw to
see which one got the best reaction.

Hopefully your lil Drama Queen has no more than a bruise or minor sprain.
Ask the Vet if you can give her a plain Aspirin for pain relief and to reduce any swelling.

Sherman made sounds I've never heard a dog make before that day he smacked headlong into the tree at the dogpark. No drama queen in this case, though, he DID break a toe - I think I'd be falling on the ground screaming & crying too!
I had a kitty once that knocked herself out - she was running full speed through the house, hit the kitchen linoleum, and slid under the stove. She tried to duck, but there just wasn't enough clearance, poor kitty. (She recovered :) )

OMG! Same thing happened to a friend. His dog fell down the stairs and broke her leg. Once it fully healed, she forgot which one was hurt and will limp on one or the other when she wants sympathy or attention. It's soo funny. :D

Wolf_Q, how is Miss Keva today?

Karen
03-20-2007, 04:42 PM
Drama queen? Nah, just looking for the appropriate sympathy when there's an actual ouchie! Better than than the "strong silent type" where you don;t notice anything is wrong until it has gotten even worse.

And yup, Bruni (RB Saint Bernard) had the "wandering limp" act perfected after Dad clipped a toenail a little too short one day because somedoggie wiggled, and she got sympathy afterwards. Wasn't her fault she couldn't remember which paw was theoretically sore when I visited? The first time it happened, I said "Dad, what's wrong with Bruni's paw? Aww, poor Bruni!"

Dad looked at me and said "Absolutely nothing, watch this. Sit, Bruni!" paused a minute, "Okay, c'mere girl," and sure enough, the limp that had been affecting the right front paw was suddenly affecting the left rear paw.

wolf_Q
03-21-2007, 11:54 AM
Well she's at the vet right now. I'll pick her up around 5:00 pm. So far everything looks good. She weighs 31.1 lbs, normal temp/heart rate/etc. She is no longer limping and the vet felt her leg and moved it around and didn't seem concerned about it. She passed the blood test, so she's getting spayed today. Of course I'm worried, but hoping that everything will be fine.

As a side note, I just found out that my boss's husband just bought his kid (who can't take care of a fish mind you  ) a husky pup that looks just like Keva. I'll try to get pics when I see her, and maybe when Keva is better they can play together...honestly the first thing I thought when I heard this is "Is he insane?" but we'll see how it turns out. I would love to take her if it doesn't work out, but my parents would kill me.

You should try to locate one of the "BiteNot Collars" - see >>>

A LOT more comfortable AND they don't get hung up on everything in the house.

Well I dont like it but she putz it on anyway. Today she took me an my big brofur to work wif her an putz us together in da big crate. She sez Nebo's a great "puppy-sitter" cuz he just sleeps an I'm happier and quieter wif a friend, she sez my pretty howling botherz da customers, dunno why. Anyway, I'm pretty talented if I do say so myself an I got that darn cone off and chewed it up so now it doesnt stay on good. Score one for the husky!

Actually I was right there in the room with her, but I was busy grooming a dog (have to actually do some work while I'm at work ;) ), she had it off and chewed it up in a matter of minutes.

Well, Keva got herself a new "cone." I think this picture does a nice job telling how she feels about it. ;)

This one too

Ok this is just gross, and too much info, I know, but this is why she now is sporting the world's largest lampshade on her head: I noticed the night I brought her home that her private area was red, but they had shaved there so I figured it was just some irritation from the shaving. I don't know why they would need to shave as much fur as they did  but I've never had a dog spayed (Syd was spayed before she came here) so I didn't know if that was normal or what. That was actually what she has been licking, she's been good about leaving the stitches alone. Well this morning it was even more red and oozing pus so she had to go back to the vet. Turns out the shaving irritated her so much that it caused an infection. Luckily the vet admitted it was their mistake so they didn't charge anything for the exam, pills, or the new e-collar. The e-collars I had were not big enough to stop her from licking there, hense, the absolutely ugly gigantic cone she now has to wear.
"Mom what is this weird creature you brought home?"
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v216/U2Q/conehead04.jpg
"Ha, no escaping now little fox!" (hasn't stopped her from wanting to play one bit)

There's a pic attached of the shave, just curious if anyone else's dogs were shaved that much when spayed.

That isn't an e-collar that's a SATELLITE DISH!!!!
I think my eyes did this
pooooooorrrr sweet Keva
give her a hug from me ok Amy -
and
Thinking back - Keegan just had a little bit of a shave- like a strip. That's a big shave - did they have a new vet tech do it that didn't know better? I'm happily surprised they realized it was their own mistake. After Keegan's spay she was too be kept quiet - yyeeeeaa right. ;) She was like on friggin' crack. She had gotten sick in her crate and I had to give her a bath - she STUNK!!! I thought she had herniated her stitches (my aunt's dog did) but it was just the scar tissue made it really lumpy there. I took her back and they checked her out and didn't charge me either. I was afraid she'd have a lump there but its absorbed and not lumpy - she's just lumpy all over other places now. (:( HOPEFULLY just fatty growths)

Awwww that is quite an e-collar. Tasha was a little hellion about her stitches too. In fact I got her a "normal" e-collar and she managed to somehow maneuver and get it partly torn up and was able to get at some of her stitches. She had to go back in for "repair" and then had to wear a huge e-collar too. I'm glad to hear her white count was back to normal and that the leg problem was nothing bad.

When Raven was younger one time she leaped up the deck stairs and misjudged and smacked her back leg on the step. She shrieked and held her leg up and cried for awhile, really freaked me out. I guess puppies like to do that to us

GOOD GRIEF, Lucy!!
WOW!

I think that Cone's just a "tad bit" "generous" ... http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/rolleyes.gif

As for the Razor Burn ... did they give you any lotion or salve to put on the
irritated area? You'd want to stay away from the Zipper - but something
soothing on the inflamed area may make her feel a bit better.

Hope she doesn't break her neck running into things ... poor ole Boots, da Kat,
had a *ruff* time getting around corners ... he NEVER allowed enough
room for the Cone ... he made a LOT of "sudden stops" with his Cone! http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/frown.gif

just a thought Amy but after reading what Phred wrote - you might check out in the shaving section - like Bikini zone or something - to prevent ingrown hairs and help with irritation. Especially with the satellite dish on her head - she won't be getting to that area to lick it.... :p

(Imaginethe Twilight Zone music here)
Da da da da, da da da da DA DA DAAAA...
Wow, that's a serious cone there, Keva!
(hee hee, those first two pictures are priceless!)

I don't recall Star having that much of a shave, but it's been a long time. I was surprised how much they shaved off Speedo when he got neutered. His belly was also razor-burned down there. It all grew back.
(I mean the fur, of course  )

We'll keep all paws crossed that giant cone does it's job and she heals quickly. Please give that little cutie a big ear skritch from me, she'll probably appreciate that more than a hug right now!

Layla was just spayed late in Dec. They didn't shave that much on her, certainly not back to her private parts and not that far up her tummy. I hope Keva heals quickly.

What's Happenin? ... That Satellite Dish make it hard to reach the pawboard on the puter?
We haven't heard an uppie-date for a while!

How's the Zipper healing? ... Are you <leaving it ALONE> like a good girl?
Tat razor burn feeling any better?

*Wishes* for a quick and itch-free healing!

Aw, poor Keva! Don't worry... that evil cone will be off soon!

There's a pic attached of the shave, just curious if anyone else's dogs were shaved that much when spayed.

They shaved Molly that much, and more. I'm afraid they shaved too much, because her coat is growing back SOOOO slowly and it's all wiry and greasy to the touch, and not smooth and silky like the rest. :(

Poor little girl!! That cone is huge, sweetheart!! What a little trooper you are. Wearing it and not even complaining. How are you now doll face? Kisses to you from us :)

That shave seems a little large, Amy. Daisy is such a tiny girl, I know hers was alot less than that though. I love that belly of Keva's ;)

I'm glad Keva did well, even if she does have to wear the e-collar. :)

As far as the shaving goes, my Vet didn't shave Tango nearly that much. They only did her stomach area. I've never seen a shave like Keva's.

Thanks for asking. :) Keva is doing great. I took the E-collar off last night and she was good, so I let her keep it off all day today (supervised) and she was good again. Her stitches and the area of infection look fine, and she isn't trying to lick all the time, she's behaving herself. She's been having fun at work with me playing with my co-workers little border collie mix pup she adopted from the shelter a couple of weeks ago. She doesn't act like she's in any pain, in fact, she's really hyper and wants to run...I've been taking her outside on a leash still (they get a little too crazy running and playing outside), but I let her play inside with Nebo and Sydney today. It's been a week as of yesterday, so I hope that's ok.

Aww, sorry to hear that poor Molly had that much of a shave too, I hope her fur (and Keva's) will grow back ok!
