OK. Just came home from the vet yet again, I think I see my vets more than their respective spouses!
Sequoia is a huge drinker and we have been doing all that was recommended, today was her re-check. Now this is after, her spay that cost us 1500 from the uterine infection that her owners let go unchecked after a litter. After her blood panels that were all over the board due to her infections. After her weight issues and switching to RAW. After her sinus infection........anyone here mentally adding up the bills yet? yes I know it isn't about the money.........it is about the fact that (hopes you are all sitting down) Her previous owner that turned her over to rescue called and they wanted her back as they have rethought it (6 MONTHS LATER)and now they "miss" her.
Now her re-check shows that she is hypo thyroid (opposite of Rustys' thyroid issue) another 200 later for vet visit and meds etc. and I have a message on the phone from a complete idiot! Who now "misses" her???
Yes this is becoming a rant. What I want to know is this?
Why when you had this animal wasn't she loved enough to care for her properly?
Why when you saw how sick she was did you decide to put outside rather than take her to the vet? Oh that right she was oozing green goo on YOUR rug!
Why when she moaned and cried when you touched her you decided that other things were SO MUCH MORE important than a vetting?
HOW could you take her love for 2 years and toss her off?
And where do you get off thinking you can EVEN ENTERTAIN the thought that now that she is healthy and happy you can just take her back??
What exactly didn't you get about giving up all rights of ownership?
ok I feel better after typing this, but nearly 3 thousand later, and no it isn't the money, it's the fact that had they spent a fraction of it .....her issues wouldn't have been a mortgage payment! Spay???81.00 against the 1500.00 to fix her issues from having litters. Blood work since being a Dobe it's a given? 50.00 against the 1100.00 in re checks and cross panels!!
annual exam for heartworm and worms? 125.00 including the meds, against 1250.00 to treat them and get her on a preventative!
Her health and happiness...Priceless
So tell me again why do I do this?
Sorry, Rant officially over.

Not to contribute into your anger- BUT I TOTALLY AGREE!! WHAT PART OF BEING STUPID do you not get???????? Would you let your child get in this shape before doing something?!
YOU GO RIGHT AHEAD AND RANT Kym! I went through the same garbage when I helped in shepherd rescue.. JUST MAKES ME SICK!

You do this because you love animals, you are a kind good hearted person and you care. I pat you on the back for your committment to this dear animal that was in such need. As for the previous owner that misses the dog now, 6 months and many dollars later - tough luck buddy. You tossed her out like yesterday's trash. You don't deserve a second chance.

Situations like these are why voice mail has a delete button! You hit delete and pretend you never got that message! And you continue to love and care for Sequoia the way she should have been all along!
You do this because in the end, they are worth it; Because it's a privilege, albeit an expensive one sometimes, to have such remarkable creatures in your world.
Two years ago, my vet opened his own clinic. I have asked him repeatedly why it isn't named after me! I'm sure I paid for it. I'm sure I will be providing two young children with tutition up to a post-doctorate degree!! I think they should call me Auntie at least!! :p

Kym- you do this because people that would treat a dog like this are idiots- and you are out to save the world- FROM IDIOTS... ( how is that one?)

Don't waste a minute's thought on those people. Into every life comes
the time when you just say "they are not worth the trouble". Life's to
short to dwell on idiots who probably will never "get it".
Give Sequoia a hug from me. :)

I totally agree, and Sequoia is lucky to have you. But save a little of that anger for the rescue society that gave out your number to her former owners. How dare they!

Actually they had my number as they contacted me about giving her up. When they couldn't get any info from the Rescue society about her, they called me with their sob story. Funny how 6 months ago this was a "aggresive dog with people and children" and now they "miss" her and have rethought their position on giving her up.
H*ll when I am feeling poorly I am agressive with people and kids too! Ask Jasper and my kids! :p

Aww Kym ... poor Sequoia, i'm just so glad that she came to you! I'll never understand people - giving up a sick and neglected dog, then expecting you to just hand her back over because they 'miss' her  Get the knitting needles ready, some people (and not just the nurses) need to be stabbed!
Some people just need to never own pets again ... too bad there isn't an internet database of 'bad owners' that they could be added too :(

You have GOT to be kidding me!!! Those people are CRAZY if they think you would put her back in that situation.
Sometimes I just don't get what goes on in people's heads. (I almost said brains, but in this case I believe the heads are lacking the brains)
Kym, you just continue to give Sequoia all the love you have been giving her for the past 6 months and ignore any messages from "those" people.

Well Dr. Weir called yesterday evening.
Quoias blood is finally a good thing! her T tests were all within range, her sugar count is now normal, her urine is fine. To say I am thrilled is an understatement.
We do have the skin issue which seems to be a reaction to some of the meds she was on, so a few baths and some herbal rememdies in the food will help clear that up and give her the shiny coat and glossy good looks she deserves!
She is still a few pounds more than what she should be, however after discussing with my vet what to remove from her Raw and still keep her healing, we have chosen to skin her ckn and remove all fish for a few weeks, add some extra game meats (much leaner than beef or ckn) she goes back for a weight check end of March. :D
Looks like my lovely lady is out of the woods and into the meadow!
Just wanted to share!

Yes they are highly intelligent, and loving is an understatement. My life wouldn't be the same without them, my own or the fosters I am blessed to help.
Well lookie there I guess I answered my own question...................I remembered why I do this!

I grew up with animals of all kinds. My kids have not known that joy as I always worked full time and didn't have the time to treat them right. Now that I am home and the kids are older (14 &5) we have our first family pet.
A shelter dog we named Danny.
Anyway, we always watch Animal Planet...... do they not press charges on people for neglecting to take their animals in for needed medical treatment??!?!?! HOW in the WORLD did they ignor it for 2 YEARS?!?!?
I'm glad she has the love and attention she needs now and I'm sorry they are calling you and making it more stressful!
Thanks for doing what you do!
My Danny had ring worm, mange, impetigo and worms when we got him. He's doing much better now and his foster mom was great in talking to us, giving us information on treatment, house training, crate training and just how to over all make him a happy part of our family!
Thanks again for what you do!

Thank you for such a sweet post!
Danny sounds like he lucked out with you as a mom!
Yes there are laws and many people are prosecuted, just not all of them, as many times proving INTENT is difficult. Very few cases that cannot be won are followed up on.
Quoia was a foster but you will hear this term often on PT she is a foster failure :D . After all she had been through and how amazing she is, we chose to adopt her formally as our own.
Her "brother" Rusty is also a FF  actually he is just a dork! I attached a pic of our failures ;)

They're both gorgeous dogs! As to how people could do that to her? Look at that stack of vet bills - they're just plain selfish & self-centered! Perhaps you should send copies of every vet bill you have for her, tell them they would have to "reimburse you every dime" before you'd ever even consider letting her go back (not that you ever would), and you will never hear from them again! ;)

I seen this post and it reminded me of a situation I just had. I became aware of horrible situation. This family had a perfect black pug, 9 years old. They pampered her and spoiled her this whole time. THEN they get a new dog. Things were fine until the new dog wasnt a pup no more and the dogs began to have there differences. (both female) The solution? Why they put the old dog out in a muddy pen and nearly forgot about her! I dont know how long she was there and if she spent the winter outide or not. Im in no place to care for a dog. (as ar as the vet and such) But I took her and found a rescue to take care of her and find a home. She was a little thin, in need of her teeth taken care of, had some skin issues starting.. ect. Im glad I got to her before it got severe.
