Toe Hair Revisited

All right, so I've been thinking about toe hair / paw fur and have a few questions. What's the best way to trip the hair? Should I use scissors or clippers? If I use clippers, is there a trick to not nicking the pads, or if I use a guide I should be fine? Frankie digs a lot an she is really easy to clean, but I think keeping her foot hair trimmer would make it even easier. Riley slides like crazy on tile, so I figure if this will even help a little bit that I should probably do it.

I use clippers and shave the fur underneath/around the pads. I'm not sure what kind of clippers you have, if they have interchangeable blades I'd recommend using a #10 blade...I do a much shorter clip, but I think a #10 is the safest blade. I use curved scissors (or for a less noticeable appearance thinning shears) on the fur between the toes on top of the feet (use a slicker and brush the fur up), around the edges of the feet, and on the front legs to the stop pad/hocks of back legs. Well actually I do Nebo/Keva's feet a bit different, but that's how I would trim most dogs feet. That probably made no sense. :o It really does make it easier to clean up muddy paws though!

I do exactly the same thing with Tango (and other dogs I groom) as Amy described. I used to scissor instead of using a clipper, but I've found that the clipper gets a bit of a neater appearance and it's quicker. Either way works just fine though, depending on what you and your dogs are most comfortable with.

I use a mini-clipper for feet. It's not as noisy and the dogs don't mind it as much. Wahl makes the clipper I have. It's a portable, about 6 inches long and comes with a charger.

Those are excellent scissors- must have set back a pretty penny. I have a set like that- I use a larger set for starting then in the pads and edges- I have a pair similar to those. ( yours are better.. lol. ;) )
