My 8 cats have varying opinions on the vacuum. Jack will hiss at it if he even sees me wheel it out, even before it's plugged in. Dusty will sit while I vacuum as long as I don't bump whatever she's sitting on. Bear will let me vacuum him with the hose, does a great job getting up loose hair off him.
For those that really are afraid of the vacuum, just shut them in a room BEFORE you even get out the vacuum. And if you need to vacuum that room, then just move them to another room before you vacuum that one. The door being shut should be enough to muffle the nosie, also playing a radio or tv kinda loud in that room should help some.
Good luck.

I have a few cats that would pick death over the vacumm any day!!! And one is a cardiac!!! I have to agree with the above post. I gather those cats up even BEFORE I take out the vacumm, and put them in a room as far away from where I will be vacumming. The door is CLOSED!!! Music is on...What is funny, when one of the cats was a kitten, he would follow me around as I vacummed and would point out where I missed!!!! Did that changed as he got older!! GOOD LUCK!!!

We have two cats. They have differing opinions on the vacuum too.
Mocha Bean will point out the spots you missed while vacuuming.
Garbonzo Bean believes the vacuum is out to get him! Before we start vacuuming the house we give Bonzo warning. We bring up the vac and let it sit. Tell Bonzo he's got to go find a hiding space. Once he goes and hides we close the door to that room. This has worked for sometime now. Bonzo recovers from vacuuming faster now that we let him pick his own safe place.

This is going to sound really stupid but it works for me. When I take out the vacuum, I make sure Cassie sees it. That usually sends her underneath the bed. When I'm done with it, I say (loudly) Bye bye, vacuum as I'm putting it away. Sometimes she comes right out from under the bed and sometimes she is so put out with me for making all that noise that she stays there awhile. My sister's RB kitty used to run and pounce on the moving hose as she used the vacuum.

I think the above suggestions are excellent!
Fister used to hide as soon as the vacuum cleaner came out, he went straight under the bed - a silly thing to do, as he cornered himself. So I stand there, turn it off and try to give him a chance to run to the kitchen, but these days, as he's getting braver :D he normally stays until I'm quite close and then has to jump over it.

I could call Smudge "Nature" because he abhors the vacuum. So I make sure I drag it to where he can see it before I switch it on, so he can go to his favorite hidey-hole.
One day I'd opened it to change the bag, and when I returned from the kitchen with a fresh one, Smudge was investigating the mangled body of the beheaded Scary Noise Monster. That's my little predator! :D
