Cardigans or Pembrokes?

I don't think this has been a poll yet... What do you prefer - Cardigan Welsh Corgis or Pembroke Welsh Corgis? I've researched both breeds pretty heavily and, even though the difference isn't huge, I definitely prefer Cardi's. :] Pemmy's are much more popular, but what is your preference?

* Slightly larger

* Tails NOT docked

* Several more accepted colors: All Pemmy colors, along with Brindle, Blue Merle, Bi-color, Tri with Brindle points, and a few variations thereof.

* Blue eyes are much more common and accepted in the standard.

* Larger ears, more rounded features & head.

* Typically more outgoing, affectionate & friendly.


Pembroke

* 10-12 inches; 25-30 lbs

* Tails traditionally docked.

* Accepted colors: Sable, Fawn, or Black Tri.

* Foxy head, pointier ears.

* Much more popular.

* Typically bolder in personality, typically more vocal.

* Coat is slightly denser/longer.

* More health problems in the breed.

I know several people that have Pembrokes, but I prefer the Cardigans!:D

I never understood the difference but I voted Cardigans because their tails aren't docked. :)

There's not much of a difference between the two. I voted pembroke though. I like their sharper features.

They're both Corgi's.

If I ever got a Corgi, it would be a Cardigan! :)

I prefer the Cardi. I love them! If I ever feel that I want a "smaller" dog, a Cardi is what I'd get.

I'm not sure if I've ever met a Cardigan...I think all of the corgis I've seen were Pembrokes. I think they are both adorable dogs. I voted Cardigan because I love dogs with tails (I don't like docking) and merle is one of my favorite colorations...plus I'm a sucker for blue eyes.

Okay, stupid question. Is the Pembroke born with a tail? If you have a Pembroke as a pet, can you go without docking it? I'm not sure I like one over the other. I was watching them on the Westminster show last night. The Corgi is a breed I'd deflinitely like to know more about! I like their happy faces and their cute ears. I vote - CORGIES!

Well, they are both fantastic breeds- smart, fun-loving and affectionate. I'd have to pick the Pems though. ;) Although I will probably have a Cardi, too, one day! :D

I'm surprised that more people voted for Cardi's! Most don't know what a Cardigan is when I tell them about Fozzie's Mom... but I guess this is PT. :p I'm also surprised that sooo many of you want a Cardi someday! Me too! My next pup will definitely be a Cardigan from a great breeder that I know.

About the question regarding docking Pembroke tails, some Pemmy's are born with bob-tails. If they aren't, the tails are docked. Pembrokes with natural tails do have similar tails to Cardigans... the original intention for docking was to avoid a long, natural tail getting stepped on by livestock. Especially since Pemmy's have always been a shorter breed than Cardi's.

Tough question. I LOVE Corgis. But I have switched back and forth between Caridigans and Pembrokes over the years. Initially I really wanted a Cardi, then for a while I was more interested in the Pembrokes, now I am into Cardis again. If you post this poll next year I may answer differently. ;)

I like the Cardigans...like wolfq, I'm a sucker for a blue merle blue eyed dog. :)

Pembrokes are supposed to be 25-30 lbs?? Mostly I see around 15 lbs.

I love both.
When I am a more advance trainer in agility, I will have a cardigan, I love the breed and there such sweet dogs.

I'd have to say a nice dark brindle and white Cardi would be my fave. Cardigans have longer legs, and I think a tail really suits a Corgi. I also like the Vastgotaspets, especially their tail that curls over the back.

Based on the description, I picked Cardigan based on the natural tail, being slightly larger, and the more pet-like personality. However, I have only ever known Pembroke mixes and no pure corgis or Cardigan mixes, so I am not making the most informed decision.

I do think the Pems are much more attractive, tho. Any red-and-white dog is gorgeous in my book.


I'd never pick either one as the pet for me, though.

I like the Pembrokes....My dad had one when he was a kid...and the dog was a ham...smart as all get! My favorite story was they were having a party and they had a cart with some meat on the bottom (it was like five ibs of burger meat I think) and Goods ate all of it....couldnt walk after that though....he kinda swam along on his belly... :p

Since I am partial to the Blue Merle coloring, and I see Pembrokes do not come in that color, I had to go with Cardigans.

Cardigans. But if I were to choose one to own it would have to be Pembroke because from what I've heard they are generally less active and have less drive to work.
