I haven't wanted to alarm anyone here and have been in hopes that whatever it was that caused my Lilly to start throwing up and not eating would have passed by now, but it is not to be. She has been at the vet every day since last Monday (2/5) for xrays, fluids, antibiotics, blood work, etc. I won't go into all the details of what he has done, but it has been a lot. She is one sick puppy and hasn't eaten without being force fed in 10 days now. And she has lost a significant amount of weight, as you can imagine, since she hasn't been eating. He has consulted with experts in the field of gastointestinal medicine and every one he has spoken with is as baffled as he is at this point. Her bloodwork has been in normal range, except for a high white count early last week.
Today she will have exploratory surgery to see if there is any obvious reason for her problems. Hopefully, if there is something obvious, it is something that can be "fixed".
Lilly is 7 1/2 years old, a lovely Golden Retriever girl. Please keep her in your prayers.

Sending a prayer Lilly's way. Please keep us posted. I'd be curious to know if they find something. Fenway went to the vet's a couple of weeks ago and they did a ton of tests (he wasn't eating, drinking and he was lethargic). But they didn't find anything and they thought he may have eaten something bad.
I will pray that Lilly gets better really quick. Take care.

What food does Lilly eat?
Unfortunately, none, right now. But on a normal day, she has the same thing that her Golden Retriever sister, Honey, eats, and that is California Natural Reduced Calorie Lamb and Rice. Honey is having no problems.
Thanks for the prayers, you guys. That's what helps me, right now. I do know that Dr. Robinson has explored every single possibility. She took a huge amount of food, through the syringe, this morning, and didn't throw it back up, so he is holding off, right now, on doing any kind of surgery. Of course, if her appetite doesn't come back, he will be forced to do that, anyway. They are doing yet another complete blood panel this afternoon and a urinalysis. I doubt they will do surgery until tomorrow, at this point.
I'll keep you posted, as I can.

Lilly is at home with me tonight. She will go back in the morning and unless the results of her bloodwork and urinalysis show something different tomorrow morning (he ran a fresh test this afternoon and sent it out to a local lab), he will do the exploratory surgery. They offered for her to stay overnight so that she and I could rest, but as well as they know me, they should have known that I would not leave her there, overnight, without knowing someone would be there the whole time.
Will update when I can, tomorrow.

Well, your prayers must have worked. I got up and went into the kitchen around 1 am and Lilly was lying there, looking at me with more interest than I've seen in more than a week. I asked her if she wanted something to eat (he told me I could continue to try to get her to eat anything, in small amounts) and I gave her peanut butter on a ritz cracker and she ate it! And then she ate two plain ritz crackers. This morning, I had to check for the dirty knife to make sure I didn't dream that. I didn't! So this morning, I offered her a treat, a medium size milk bone, which I broke into pieces, and she ate the whole thing. Then she ate another. Helen offered her some cheese and she ate a little bit of that. And when I fed Honey and Mack, I offered her a small amount of Bil Jac fresh food and she ate that. I didn't test her any further because I haven't yet talked with Dr. Robinson about the blood work, but I do know that they found blood in her urine last night as I was leaving and he gave her a big injection to start clearing that up. I called Patsy and she told me to keep her here and she would have him call me as soon as he reviews her blood work. What a turnaround, after 11 days! She is weary, but she ate!
Perhaps it was a bladder infection all along. No telling. All I know is that we have been given a little reprieve and hopefully she has turned the corner. I know that all of those prayers from Scott, Helen and me and all of you had to do the trick.
I will let you know more after I hear from Dr. Robinson, but I certainly do feel a bit of relief this morning.
Thank you all so much for caring.
Love,
Logan and Lilly

Lilly has gone every day for an injection to help calm down infection, stimulate her appetite, and necessary vitamins. She has not been sick since Wednesday afternoon, which is good, but she also isn't eating, which has us worried. She has had small bits of things (cheese bagel, treats and part of a plain hamburger), but can't sustain herself, long term, on things like this.
She is spending the day at the vet's office, today, and probably is receiving IV fluids with antibiotics, plus he was going to do new bloodwork to see if there is any change from earlier in the week, plus a new urinalysis, to see if that problem is improving, as well. Her new friend, Katie, who is a Lab, is undergoing exploratory surgery, right now, as she has not rebounded at all, even though she has had some "highs" like Lilly, where things looked better. Katie is very sick, and he is concerned that he will find cancer in her surgery. I pray for Katie, and pray that Lilly will not have to have this surgery. We must get her to eat.
Please keep your prayers coming.

Lilly has not had a great day. She doesn't want to eat and her white blood cell count is higher (44,000, up from 17,000, earlier in the week). She did eat two bites of a grilled cheese sandwich a few minutes ago, but I was hoping for more, but she turned her head away. She got IV fluids today and Katie's mom loved on her while Katie was in surgery. He could find nothing inside of Katie to indicate cancer or anything else. I got to give Katie a little loving too, this afternoon, when I went in to get Lil. Bless her sweet Labbie heart, she is hanging in there. We'll go back in the morning for some more medication and fluids. We're fighting, but good gosh, this is getting very hard for Lilly and for her mom, let alone Dr. Robinson and Patsy, who have hung in there with us through all of this. He kept apologizing to Van (Katie's mom) and me tonight, for not being able to figure out what in the world could be causing their problems. I think it would be easier to solve if one of my others was having the same symptoms. Katie is an only dog so there is nothing else to compare to.
Keep praying and sending those positive thoughts. Lilly and I appreciate them.
Love,
Logan

Good evening, my friends. I'm sorry I haven't checked in sooner today.
I do think I have what is some pretty good news, though. Last night, right before we went to bed, Miss Lilly went out to do her business and obviously had some issues because she looked like she hadn't finished doing her business when she came in. She passed about a 2 ft long cord of some kind. We have no idea where it came from, but it was obviously the culprit causing the infection. She was like a new dog this morning. Happy, hungry and ready to play. An amazing transformation. We took her for another injection of antibiotics and vitamins today and she literally pullled on the leash. We hope that as she eases back into eating, things will be fine. She just had two rather large new potatoes for her dinner and some cooked carrots and would have eaten more if I had let her. She was under my feet in the kitchen while I was preparing them. It is astonishing that after two very worrisome weeks, my girl is better.
Lilly will continue with antibiotic treatments until that white count is back in check. :)
Hope you all have a good night and stay warm. We are freezing!

Lilly is continuing to do better and better. She is eating and playing and other than stiff hips, she is doing great. Dr. Robinson checked her over this morning and was very pleased. The new bloodwork indicated that her white count is going down. That is a
good thing. But her red count has dropped, too, which means she is losing
blood and is slightly anemic. He said that he walked her outside, observed
the diarrhea and it is full of blood. Her colon is apparently bleeding from
where I pulled that string out. She got a good dose of B vitamins, iron,
and antibiotics, as well as a shot of Reglan (to help the nausea) and some
liquid medication to coat her tummy and intestinal track and help the
diarrhea. I gave her an injection of Reglan this morning, and forced her to
swallow about 20cc of the anti-diarrheal medication. He said at any sign of
change in her behavior or continued digestive problems, I am to call him,
right away, and he will meet me at his office (they are closed on
Thursdays). Otherwise, she will go back tomorrow and spend the day so that he can observe her. I pushed him about her recovery and I never did get a real strong "oh, she'll be fine in no time". I gather this is pretty
serious, but that is why it is so important for me not to wait if I see
anything getting worse.
Lilly is much less enthusiastic this morning. She is sleeping and did ask
to go outside around 5:45 this morning for a little while. She wasn't
interested in eating this morning, so I didn't push her. She had a little
bit of boiled potato last night and some bread and she did digest all of
that because when she threw up overnight, I didn't see any of that come
back. They did tell me, this morning, that the iron and vitamins probably
gave her a little boost, yesterday, and made her feel better, thus her
enthusiasm last night.
Patsy (the vet tech) called me this morning around 8:15 and said Dr.
Robinson had already called her to see how Lilly was doing. He woke her up!
Ha Ha! I'm glad he cares enough to follow up that early and he knew I would
call Patsy if I had any problems. We'll continue to watch her closely, as
he said we had to do, and if anything changes, I'll call them right away. I
went to the office and got my stuff and brought it home so I wouldn't have
to stay there. I may have to go back for an hour or so this afternoon, but
I hope not.
He does not believe that any of that string (or whatever it was) is left in her system, since we got such a big piece when she did pass it. And I asked if there was any possibility that her intestines had been perforated by this "thing" and he said "absolutely not" as she would be "down" in a much worse way if her body was being contaminated. Whew! I guess that is the bit of good news I have to report today.
I'll keep you posted. Thanks so much for the prayers.

Hi everyone... This message is a cross post of a dear friend of Logan's who is very close to her. I'm cross posting because our dear Lilly needs all the prayers she can get now.
Logan was so hopeful yesterday, cause Lilly at a bit of canned food on her own, but then she ended up throwing that up again last night.
Lilly is back at the vet's. The doctor had planned to do more X-Rays, Barium, etc., and possibly exploratory surgery to see if there was still something there, but our Lilly has gone into kidney failure.
They're giving Lilly blood transfusions and aggressive fluid therapy to try to get her kidneys functioning again. No surgery or anything can be done until they accomplish that.
Lilly is critical at this point. Logan is at the vet's with her, holding her as they try to help her.
All of you, please pray. Pray hard today for our Lilly girl. They're doing everything they can to help get her kidneys functioning again, but it's gotta happen soon if she's going to make it.
Logan will be calling me later with an update. I'll keep all of you updated every chance I get.

As Dr. R explained to Scott and me, yesterday, after pumping her body full of fluids (3 IV bags, just yesterday), he was in hopes that it would kick start Lilly's kidneys so that they would start doing their "job" again, of taking the waste out of the bloodstream. When bloodwork was done around 6 pm last night, there was no improvement in that important BUN (sp?). He had told us that if we couldn't get that BUN down, we would have to let her go. Even though peeing is important and helps her rid her of some of that excess fluid, it isn't an indication that all is well. She did pee twice before settling down for the night. We are glad he allowed us to bring her home and give her another shot at an improving BUN this morning. If it were to be better, I don't know what happens. Dr. R told Scott that if we got a miracle and she improved, she will never be 100% again.
The string in her colon and the subsequent bleeding don't have a direct relationship to what is going on with the kidneys, but her weakened and stressed condition has probably caused us to now know that she had a kidney problem. Until yesterday, the BUN and Creatine (sp?) have been normal.
We will be taking her back around 8:30 this morning. I will let Betty know, by phone, what is going on.
Thank you all for your prayers and good thoughts. While you're praying, please remember Dr. Robinson and his staff, those 3 wonderful dogs (Blue, Jake and Oreo) who provided the blood for Lilly's transfusion yesterday, and our 3 children (Helen, Elizabeth and Andrew), who are all devastated, and precious Honey, who will not know what to do without her sidekick, Lilly, who has always been there with her.

As I get more information I will try to keep everyone here updated also so you can all be in prayer. I strongly believe in the miracle of prayer and it really sounds like Logan and her family need it also in addition to our sweet Lilly.

Thank you, my friends, for your prayers and concern in the past weeks, while Lilly has been so ill. Lilly has been my faithful companion for 7 1/2 years. We (my daughter, Honey, and I met her the very day she was born). She was "my" dog, but she loved everyone.
Yesterday morning, I took Lilly in and the complete blood panel was done, immediately, as she has continued to be sick, even with continued fluids, every day. Lilly was in kidney failure. Her BUN (which is the measurement they use for kidney function) had been normal, all along, through the last couple of weeks, but over the weekend, her kidneys failed. Lilly, Scott, Helen and I spent the day at the vet's office with her, yesterday, while she got 3 liters of fluid, through IV, to try and kickstart her kidneys. She also received a blood transfusion. Our vet and one of his technicians brought their big dogs in to provide blood for Lilly to try and boost her red cell count. He allowed us to bring her home, last night, in hopes for a miracle that somehow she would rebound, or maybe so that we could have some time, away from there, with her. There was no miracle this time.
That darling, gentle girl, left this world, this morning, surrounded by people who loved her. Her bloodwork was worse, this morning, than it was last night. We all fought for her life, but none of us fought any harder than that precious girl, who lifted her head and kissed me in the wee hours of the morning, Honey, our 8 year old "half sister" of Lilly, and my husband, Scott, surrounded her. And once again when Helen, my 16 year old daughter, walked into the room this morning. Dear Helen even got a tail wag from her.
She was on her soft blanket, on the floor behind the reception desk in Dr. Robinson's office, where she had stayed for so many days the past 3 weeks. It was a quiet morning there, with only one other appointment, earlier, so there was no reason to move her. We just all knelt beside her, laid our hands on her, and Dr. Robinson administered the meds that put her to sleep and relieved her of any pain she might have had.
Thank you so much, my dear friends, for your continued support of Lilly, Dr. Robinson and our family. I don't think there is a medical staff in this world, human or veterinary, who would have done more to save a dog than this man and his staff did.
I will be back, but need some time with my family and our remaining pets, so that we can absorb yet another loss and get back to a better place, emotionally. 4 losses in 14 months has taken its toll on all of us. :(
Love,
Logan, Honey, Mack, Butter, Roger and Milly
