Labs are a little too hyper for me! Yikes. But, I'm sure there are plenty of good ones out there. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif Rotts are my favorite. But, I know we have quite a few lab lovers on the board.

You won't find me saying anything against labs!! They're first cousins to my wonderful Golden Retrievers! Actually I had a lab for the whole time I was married, and that special boy knew me until the day he died at 15. He looked very much like Aly's baby, as well as Sandra's Star! What's not to love?? They are energetic, muscular, loving dogs. And so happy and willing to please their owners.
Everyone has their own favorites...it's all in what you're used to. The perfect picture of a lab to love is Jojo's Hunter. His picture is around here somewhere....sorry I don't have it loaded to put in this post!
Mark me as one who LOVES labs.

Labs are wonderful sporting dogs. If they are hyper, they aren`t getting enough exercise. They were bred to work, not lay around.
BTW Have you found your pug yet?

For the ones who say labs are tired my labs are hyper... exept 1.
But the one that is not hyper is old. but is does have a lot of exersise also.

I, too, love labs but I don't know if I could ever have one again. Beener did not fully mature until he was 4 years old, and until that point he was a complete ball of energy. I like a more mellow dog because I am not an athlete and so owning a non-stop energy dog is not the best match for me.
KayAnn: Graham usually does not like any labs, unless they are super mellow or old! He does not like hyper dogs either, and he usually gets so irrated by big, energetic, bouncy dogs that always want to jump on him. He is pretty tolerant of little dogs jumping on him (to a certain degree) but he grumbles when an overly excited labbie (or any large, excited, high energy dog) comes running up to him and does not quit trying to get him to play.
Graham and Simba have something in common http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif I bet they would get along good. Graham usually really likes dogs who "respect his space" and don't try to over do it with their energy. He has some dogs that he really likes at the dog park but he truly does not like labbies. When a labbie walks up to him he becomes a grouchy old man and grumbles...and grumbles...and grumbles more http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

I have a Lab mix (I hope to get a pic posted next wk). I love labs because they easy going - the ones we have owned anyway! But, yes it does take them a long time to grow out of that puppy stage http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif Buddy is the most mellow but very very playful when he has someone to play with.
Even though their puppy stage lasts about 3-4 years, they have the best temperments. Children were always hanging on Dessi or pulling on her tail. You could tell she was a little uncomfortable but she'd just sit there and let them do it. I couldn't have asked for a sweeter dog.

Labs are a bit too hyper for me but when they get older they are big sweeties! I wouldn't say I don't like them because I love all breeds, but I doubt I will ever have the energy for one! My aunt has one and that dog runs poor Daisy all over the place. I usually have to save her http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif
And how could anyone say anything bad about labs when Daisy's bud Star is a beautiful labby baby? http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

I Absolutely LOVE labs! I have a chocolate lab and I adore him. He is very energetic but I love to exercise and run so it works out well. We go boating together and I just really love him to death! I wouldn't settle for any other type of dog!

To those of you, who think that Labs are hyper, you probably never had a pointer or a Dalmatian before, even Border Collies are much more hyper than Labs.
Whenever my Lab is playing with his Dalmatian friend he gets tired after an half an hour and lay helplessly on the ground with a miserable look in is eyes, as if he is saying "Will she please leave me alone , she's driving me crazy with her jumping all over the place". The same thing happens to him when he plays with his mixed Border Colly friend after an hour or so of play time.
I think Labs are in a good place in the middle when it comes to energy levels. If my lab is starting to get hyper, the cure for that is to let him walk 1-2 miles and he returnes to be a couch potato for the rest of the day.
I think the misconception about labs being too hyper is related to the fact that labs remain in a puppy stage for almost 3 years.
But researches on animals behaviour show a direct connection between the length of the animal "childhood" period to the level of intelligence, so that's a good thing http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

Well, anyone here who knows me; anyone who has been posting here for a while, knows MY answer to that one!! :D I have to say, however, there's seems to be a lot of posting lately on topics regarding the "best" breed, "disliked" breeds "why I don't like this breed" etc., and I find it a bit troublesome. I have and adore my, and all labs. They are fun, funny, smart, athletic, gentle and loyal. But I can honestly say I love all dogs; ALL breeds, ALL mixes! They may not all be the perfect complement to my lifestyle. But they have my love and affection, admiration and appreciation 100%. Most people choose a particular breed or mix because it does suit their lifestyle, activity level, time constraints, housing etc. Just because it may not be the right dog for me at this time, does not mean I cannot appreciate another's choice. As for labs in particular. Hyper???? Well, they do say that labs are puppy's till 3 or 4. Well, how many of us have said how we miss those puppy days??? Us lablovers have an extra 2 or 3 years to enjoy this stage! And lest we forget. Dogs were originally breed for specific purposes.....working, herding, sporting, etc. Being active, athletic, driven, etc. were the desired and bred for traits! And I agree with K9Luvr and LuvMyRott..If your lab is hyper, the dog is not getting enough exercise. My vet, who is a lab mom, says that until age 4, labs require a MINIMUM of 1 hours' FLAT OUT running, swimming and retreiving per day to be contented. They want and NEED to work and exercise or they become bored. If you can't provide it, and your lab is too hyperactive, then maybe another breed would be a better choice. I love to swim, run, hike, etc. and I NEED a dog that can keep up! Labs, for me, are the perfect companion! But I do not love them exclusively....I rarely post on the Lab Retriever sites....I love it here, where I can satisfy my addiction for the love of ALL DOGS' ALL BREEDS! Being able to share and have a peek at all of my special dog friends here allows me to feel a part of the entire community of dog breeds and I am so grateful to have come to know and love them ALL! Each one is special. I'm not sure why. But there seems to be a bit of "lab bashing" going on lately! :( When anything, including a breed of dog, becomes so popular, there does seem to be a tendency for a backlash. I hope that we can all agree that we share a deep and abiding love for all of our 4 legged friends, regardless of their heritage! And Daisy, Star says, Thanks Pal!!!! :)

Count me in for Labs, they are beautiful sleek dogs., just take a look at "Star".
For every breed of dog in the world, there are people who truly love them, whether they be mixed or purebred. Most everyone who loves dogs will look into the type of dog that will suit their lifestyle whether it be couch potatoe, active, weekend warrior, whatever. We each have our own preferences and reasons for picking the dog we have, but I don't believe there are any dogs that we don't like, because we are all animal lovers here. :)

I like most labs (just as I like most dogs in any breed) but I don't think that I would ever get a lab as a pet. The main reason is the overbreeding! I can check out the "Pets for sale" section in the classifieds of the Toledo Blade, and there are always AT LEAST 12 to 15 entries for litters of Lab puppies! But then I go to the Humane Society, and usually about a third of the dogs there for adoption are Labs or Lab mixes! Nothing against Labs (though I don't think I could keep up with one, LOL :D )!

I too love labs... I have never lived with one, however, my cousins who lived up the street always had 2-3 Labs in their house. They are wonderful dogs. They are lots and lots of fun, and I have many special memories of them.
One of my favorites is about their Black Lab named Polo. She was a character! She was always into something... a real handful, and a real LOVE! We would all go up the families cabin in the North Woods of Wisconsin every summer. As you all know, Labs love water. Polo would swim across the lake every day... ending up on a beach that belonged to the local resort. She would visit people there, happily accept any handout given to her, and then after resting.. head back.
As she got older, it beacme more and more difficult for her to get around. She had terrible arthritus. The day came when she began to sleep downstairs, because it was too difficult for her to climb the stairs.
That summer, when everyone arrived at the lake, we all figured that Polo would no longer swim accross the lake. Our first day there... she walked down the path, to the end of the dock and jumped in. My Aunt asked us to stop her... that she wasn't strong enough.
Several of the kids jumped in, and tried to herd her back to shore. Polo was determined though... and very stubborn. And so, every day, when we'd hear that certain splash, we'd hop into an old wooden rowboat with a very small motor, and follow her back and forth... at a discreet distance, Of Course!!! ;)
Her youth came back that summer for a couple of weeks anyway! Polo continued this for 3-4 more years. It was heartwarming to watch.
Polo crossed the Bridge several years ago... yet when we look across the lake, I swear I can see a black head, bobbing in the water... heading to the resort's beach! :)

Oh Annie, how your story made me cry and laugh...Polo could be my lab of a lifetime, Jingles, or my current lab baby Star. Both of them fiesty, determined, ever living life to the hilt! The part about Polo winding up at the resort playing social director and happily taking handouts, then a snooze...well, that just about sums up everything I love in a lab. It sounds like Polo had the most special life. I hope, when the time comes, and my current lab Star is a senior lady, she will still enjoy life as Polo did, right till the end. Love to the magnificent Polo. "Jing....are you playing with Polo there at the Bridge??"
