Beautiful Bonita (Bonnie) is free

Bonnie is on her way to the bridge. My mom and I sent her there today. She tried to get up to drink water but could hold up her own weight. She tried walking back to her bed and got lost in the corner of the dining room.

My mom and I agreed that it was time.

We took her to the vet, bundled in a little blanket and her sweater. They took us in before I could get all of the word Euthanized out of my mouth. They took her away to weigh her and get her IV catheter in. The vet brought her back along with a big syringe full of blue liquid. My mom asked him if it was time and the look on his face one of relief as he quietly said, "oh yes." He gingerly laid her down and gave her the shot. Once it was all in her, he listened to her heart, took his stethoscope off and put his hand on my shoulder and gave his condolences. My mom and I took turns holding her lifeless little body. We both commented that she didn't look any different than before.

Bonnie, you were such a special dog. You loved everyone and everything. You would have thought Jack the Ripper was the Gandhi. You made non-animal lovers swoon. You turned "cat" people to "dog" people. You were always happy, bright, bouncy and full of energy.

You blessed me with 16 years of your beautiful little life and you sure lived up to your name, Bonita.

Run pain free and play at the bridge baby, girl. You know my dad loved you, so please find him and keep him company.

We'll always love and miss you. This world just lost a very special girl.

I'm so very sorry. I know how much it hurts. I experienced that pain myself in November. As I've told others, it's the last gift of love we can give them. It's always too soon to lose them but at least they know they were well loved. I hope Bonnie is enjoying the RB now. She'll be waiting for you there, as all our loved RB animals will.

I let my mom read all of your comments and she said to me, "they really know what it's like to lose a loved one, don't they?" I said, "Yes, they do! Why do you think I hang out there so much? ;) " She was very moved by your comments and wanted me to thank everyone. Your words meant a lot to her and me.

I am going to pick up her ashes today. :(
