My poor Red Lightning has passed away :( And I'm pretty sure I know why.

About a week ago my father wanted a betta for his 20 gallon hexagon tank, and since I had a betta he asked if I wouldn't mind putting my betta in his tank. So being a nice daughter I thought "well it couldn't hurt him I guess. He might actually like the larger room and to be in with some other tropical fish," so I got my betta out and put him in the 20 gallon.

I stayed by the tank watching Red Lightning intently for at least 5 minutes. Then one moment I looked away at the TV and when I looked back, he had himself and his pretty long fins caught in the filter :( I panicked and grabbed the net and turned off the filter and got him out right away and put him back in his original tank. When I put him back in he literally looked like he sighed in relief.

But thanks to the filter, a large chunk of his tail got torn off. I thought he was going to be fine and it would just grow back as does most fins when they get nicked, but it must have been too large of a chunk because about a week later he passed away.

I had Red Lightning for over a year, I think he was at least 2 or 3 years old. I hope that Red Lightning is now swimming in the beautiful tropics at the Rainbow Bridge.

I'm so sorry. I lost my betta flame last March. People don't expect it to be upsetting when losing a fish, but sadly it is.

Thanks everyone. Yes even though they are fish, you can still become really attached to them. I think Red Lightning is definately happy at the Rainbow Bridge now. I got mad at my dad because he called my betta a wimp, because he couildn't get himself out of the filter...but my poor betta was so use to no current at all, it wasn't his fault.
