I was on my way home from visiting my grandparents tonight, when I saw this dog on the side of the road. My grandparents live in the middle of nowhere, but this road is a pretty busy road as many truckers take it up to Dalton and Chatanooga.

I got out of the car and called the dog over to me and she was so friendly and sweet. She had no collar or tag. I felt her ribs and she seemed to be on the skinny side. Her coat was so matted around the ears, neck, tail, and butt. I put a sheet on my front seat and asked her to hop in and she did so gladly.

When we got home, I gave her some food and water and she inhaled them both! I put some advantage on her and she is now sleeping in my back room. She smells pretty bad and I didn't want to bring her into the rest of the house till she gets groomed tomorrow and bathed.

I will be trying to find a home for her ASAP. Draker will be coming home on July 3rd and she can'r stay here when Draker is home. He is very protective.

I have named her Roxey. I will try and set up an appointment to get her checked up by a vet. I have never had to deal with any doggy diseases and this is the first stray I have ever brought home. Anything I need to worry about that could harm Draker when he retunrs?

Poor puppy!!! I don't know of any diseases that you need to be worried about but that doesn't say much cause I don't know anything about doggy diseases....:o.... GOOD LUCK finding Roxey a good home... What does she look like? Can you tell what breed/breeds she might be?

Karen

First, of course, fleas and ticks, the rest you can ask the vet! If her fur looks intact, that's good. There were no houses near where she was? Hope she's not just a "slipped the collar, went for a run and got lost" beloved girl of someone's heart.

I only say that 'cause she was so friendly!

DoggiesAreTheBest
06-25-2002, 06:13 AM
She had at least 15 ticks on her and I safely removed them. I couldn't tell much about the fleas coz she is totally black, but I put advantage on her anyway.

There are no houses or anything for over 20 miles. I was so worried about her because of all those trucks driving on that road. I saw her on my way over to my grandparents, and she was chasing a truck! When I saw her on my way back after 5 hours, I felt like she wasn't were she was supposed to be.

I will take her to get groomed as she is in need of a haircut and a bath. I will take before and after pictures.

I just took Roxey to the vet to get groomed, dipped, a rabies shot, heartworm test, and fecal test. So far she has been great! Very social and sweet. I could not tell if she was spayed or not because her fur was out of control and it was dark when I picked her up.

Today, I will have her around children and be able to tell more about her temperment around kids. She rides exeptionally well in the car and was great with my 17 year old brother and 2 16 year old cousins who are visiting for the week. My neighbor even came by and pet her this morning after our jog and she was friendly.

I will bring her into the rest of the house today to see if she is house trained. She spent the night in my back room and didn't go potty till I took her outside.

I called the Animal Control from the County I found her at and asked if anyone had reported her missing, they said no. I called the only gas station in that area (the only place that has people in that 30 miles) and they said she had been frequenting the store for the past few weeks and they have been giving her some food.

If you know of anyone who would be interestd in Roxey, please let me know. I will post pictures today after I get her from the vet.

It is just so nice of you to do this for this poor pup. Isn't just awful the way some of these animals are living? It could be that she ran away from her home, as some animals do, and that she was loved and cared for. Dogs can roam many miles away from home. I hope she finds a new owner who will be as kind to her as possible.

You have a huge heart! You are so SWEET...... I could just hug you forever, for taking care of this pup! It must have cost a fortune to have the Vet take care of her.

Thank you, thank you.

I picked up Roxey today from the Vet and she looks GREAT! I can't wait to post the pictures I am taking of her. She is absolutely the sweetest thing I have ever met.

She tested negative for HW! Hurray and I started her on preventative. She also got all her shots and a haircut.

She has been inside the house roaming around and hanging out. She let me pet her and rub her ears as she ate and has been such a great lil girl. My friend Eugene will be bringinf his little girls over so that I may obseve her around children.

The vet said he couldn't tell if she was spayed. I don't know what to do to find out. Any ideas? He said she was about 3-4 years old. Everyone at the vet's office fell in love and said she was a sweetheart.

Pictures 1st thing in the morning.

Souraya,

I'm suprised that the Vet couldn't tell if she's spayed.
Does she have very dense, thick hair? You should be able
to see a scar on her belly if you she'll let you rub her fur.
Do you think she's sweet and submissive enough that
Drake would accept her as part of your "pack"?:D Liz.

p.s. Another reason for her being so friendly, is that she
might have been dumped after being befriended.:(

Last night, I was able to observe Roxey around children and she did great. My friend's girls came over and they played with Roxey and cried and begged to take her home! :p

This morning, after our jog, some neighborhood dogs came over and played with Roxey and they got along so well.

She is potty trained. She nudged my arm in the middle of the night, and lead me to the front door. I put her on a leash, and sure enough, she went potty once we got outside!

Here are the pictures you have been waiting for!'

From her looks and temperment I'd say she has flat coated reteiver in her if not all. My newf Lady is
Newf/retever mix That makes a good sturdy dog and a great temperment for kids. She will have a forever home fast. Just becareful they tend to become attached to you and you to them. Thats how Lady came to live with us.

Souraya,

She looks like a flat-coated retriever mix to me too!! In fact she looks a little like Duncan in her face!! His nose is thinner and obviously he has the brown legs, but her eyes...
Is her tail fluffy and long or short like a retriever?

She sure is beautiful and she sounds like a sweetie! Has anyone come forward looking for her yet? I hate to think of what she has been through before you found her....

I had to tak Roxey back to the vet to get her Parvo/Distemper shot. The other vet's office forgot to do it. My vet shaved her belly and took a look at it but found no scars. His verdict: Not Spayed.

They charge $88.00. If I can get to an Army base, I can get inexpensive vet treatment. However, I do not live anywhere near an army base. If worse comes to worse, I can drive her to College Park, GA and get her spayed at Ft. Gillem. I am looking at other vets that charge a reduced fee for rescues. Wish me luck.

Well, Roxey has been warming up more and more everyday! She was very timid when I found her and in less than a week, I can already tell the difference. She has gotten comfortable with her surroundings. The thing I am excited about the most is that she is responding to her new name! :)

The first few days, she wouldn't hop up on the bed to cuddle with me, but last night she snuggled and even spent the whole night with me. She is such a dainty lil girl and has totally stolen my heart!

Good Luck finding a low cost spay. And is that a I hope Drake likes her cause I want to keep her sound in your voice?????

DoggiesAreTheBest
06-28-2002, 10:25 AM
Well, Candy. Andrew and I have been talking about it and may seriously consider keeping her if Draker likes her and accepts her in our home. At the same time, despite, my great love for Roxey, I have some concerns.

Here are a few:

1. I am moving in with a friend as of end of July because my lease will be up at this house and my landlord want me to sign another lease for one year. Only problem is, I will be moving again anytime between December and April! My friend already has 1 dog. I have to clear it with her since it is her house!

2. Drake has been an only dog. And this may sound very silly, but I feel like bringing another dog into our home permenantly would compromise his status. He will still be the spoiled lil brat he is now. But realistically, he won't be getting ALL the attention anymore.

3. Again, Andrew and I are moving soon. We have no clue where we will be stationed next. Moving across the country, or even the ocean (if we ge stationed in Europe or Asia) is going to be difficult enough as it is! Imagine how it will be trying to move 2 dogs with you.

Perhaps I am over reacting, but I am trying my best to be a responsible pet owner. What do you think?

K9karen
06-28-2002, 11:38 AM
Points well taken

mugsy
06-28-2002, 01:23 PM
All of your points are viable questions that need to be considered heavily. If you have to leave the country will you be able to take Drake let alone 2 dogs?

Drake should be ok especially since she is female and they will establish the boundaries themselves. We've found that since we have established ourselves as the alphas that the other dogs pretty much accept any newcomer simply because we do.

Dixieland Dancer
06-28-2002, 01:52 PM
Souraya, I guess it is better if you do find Roxey another home considering your future living arrangements are so uncertain. Even taking Drake (I thought he was a boy) is going to be difficult. Some countries require dogs to be quarantined for periods of time when transporting across borders. I'm sure you are aware of all that already though.

The second point of him having to share the attention is not something I would be overly concerned about. I have two and they both get spoiled and given tons of attention. It just means that now you will have two to love you too!!! :D And as Mugsy said, if you are alpha, Drake should have no problem with it after the initial adjustment period because it is what you want!

She is such a beauty and so well trained already, you should not have a hard time finding a home for her. Best of Luck!! ;) :D :)

I hate to mention this because I think Roxey would be a wonderful addition to your family. My nephew is in the Air Force and was stationed in Bahrain. They brought one dog with them from the States and adopted another in Bahrain. When they were transferred from Bahrain to Okinawa it cost over $2,000 to have the dogs flown to their new home.

Drake came home on Wednesday evening and he didn't like Roxey AT ALL. He chased her and cornered her on the back porch. I had to pull him off her. Luckily, he didn't hurt her. But she is terrified of him :(

She is now at my friend's house, and I have been checking up on her twice a day. My friend has a ive in nanny and 2 other dogs. She likes Sassy and Charly. She can not stay there for very long.

I need to find her a home right away.

I am trying my hardest to find Roxey a home. But I am not succeeding. The situation with Roxey being at my friend's house is stressful. I am having to go to both houses during lunch to let them out. Plus, I am having to take them both on walks at separate times, etc...

I took her on Saturday morning to Petsmart with the Society of Humane Friends and we had no luck. I have e-mailed dozens of people in reponse to Dog Wanted ads, and no one has replied even to say no thanks.

She needs to get spayed but will require care and attention which I can not provide at this moment. My whole department is out of town for this week and I am having to do everything by myself at work. In addition to that, I am working on my Thesis for my masters, plus having rowing practice with the kids on Tuesday nights.

I have been feeling weak and sick this morning. I hope I am not coming down with something.

Is it possible for Andrew to have Drake again for a week or so to help you out. That way Roxey could stay at your place again while you continue to look for a permanent home for her. The only other suggestion I can think of is a no kill shelter. :(

DoggiesAreTheBest
07-08-2002, 12:26 PM
Andrew is considering the option of Drake coming to Alabama for a while. Andrew lives in an apartment and hate that Drake has to be kept inside at all time unless he is out with him. But it is a possibility.

She will stay at my friend's house till I can find her a permanent home if that is neccessary. I will deal with the stress and being tired until then.

Roxey looks like such a sweet dog. I hope you find her a good permanent home, soon. I know the situation becomes more stressful as the days go by :( . I wish I had room for a third pup, but my apartment is busting at the seems, as it is. I'm partial to black lab mixes (and goldens) and I know Jake and Addie would love her. :(

I tired to get the next door neighbor of my friend's to walk Roxey and she wanted to charge me $20.00 a day. So I said no way!

I still am going to both houses to take care of both dogs during lunch and then when I get home. Drake gets his morning runs and my brother walks him in the evenings.

Still no luck finding her a home. I am not sure how much longer I can keep up running back and forth between my house and my friend's.

Just wanted to update you on the situation. Oh, and I had a dream that Drake and Roxey got along. That sure was a dream.

$20!!! That is outrageous for walking!!! I just talked to a dog sitter about watching the girls while we are in Florida and see charges $15/day/dog And for that she will keep the dogs at your house, her house or stop over, water your plants, get you mail, basically make your house look lived in. $20 for a walk is unreal!!!

I hope you find something soon. She is such a beautiful dog!

Souraya,

I find myself going back to look at Roxey's picture at
least once a day. If you lived closer, I would say bring
her over now. She has the sweetest, most innocent,
loving looking eyes I've ever seen. I think Buddy would
like her because I like her so much.(I know that doesn't
make any sense) , but I feel they could get along. It's such
a big step to take from a distance, so to speak. If it comes
down to it, please let me know if Roxey becomes impossible
to keep any longer. Thanks, Liz .

Liz,

Roxey hasn't been impossible to keep, but my situation has made it very difficult to take care of both dogs in two separate locations. I miss Roxey and wish she could stay with me all the time while I was trying to find her a home, but Drake is not ready to accpet another dog into our home. They play fine on neutral territory, but if she comes into our yard, he gets pretty angry. I guess he can sense how much his Mommy loves her!

If you are interested in Roxey, I am sure we can find a way to get her to you. I did have an offer yesterday for a home for her, but the people wanted her to be an outdoor dog and I couldn't have that. I asked where would Roxey be if it rained, and they answered in her dog house. I immediately thanked them for contacting me and told them I had others to consider and would let them know soon. I will call tomorrow and tell them NO!

Oh that would be wonderful if Roxey could come to live with Liz and Buddy. I don't know if you occasionally get over to the cat boards, but my daughter's ragdoll cat, Gabriel, was recent re-homed to a Pet Talker, Sasvermont! SAS was vacationing in the Philadelphia area and the morning of the transfer we took a one hour ride to hook up with her at an easy to find location. Where there's a will there's a way! It has worked out just beautifully!! It all started with a post such as this one and now they are all living happily ever after. I know Roxey would be in excellent hands living with any Pet Talker and it would be like giving her to a member of the family! ;)

Souraya, I wish I could help you with Roxey. Don't you sometimes wish your dog could speak english so you can tell him to be nice to the girl just until you can find her a home!?!?! I think Drake has Only Child Syndrome :)

Yeah, I do wish he spoke English, or French, or even Arabic. Anything so he could understand what I am trying to do. He does have Only Child Syndrome and I have been working very hard with him daily to try and over come that.

I do not want Liz to think I am pressuring her into taking Roxey. But if she wants her and thinks Buddy would like a playmate, I am sure we can find a way to get her there :)

sasvermont

Maybe another person here can get involved in the transfer? It is not always easy, and often takes lots of time - sometimes weeks to work out the details, but not necessarily!

I wish you guys lots of luck - and where there is a will there is a way.

It may not work out perfectly, but just so it works out is GOOD! It is so nice being "of help" to a fellow Pet Talker! And I think the comfort the person giving away the pet has, is incredible! I am sure Robyn and Pam are so darn happy that Gabe the Monster kitty is adjusting just perfectly at my home. He has been such a sweet guy so far. I think he needed to get knocked down a peg or two and not be the king kitty, and so now he is sharing the top spot with Graemer.

Anyway, keep working on this and hey, I bet it will have a happy ending!

Souraya,

Hi. Sorry I am so late in answering your response to my
P.M. about how Roxey is with kitties. I kind of thought she
might get along with them, or be taught to, since she is so
very sweet & mellow. I have been under the weather for
the last few days, due to a bad reaction to a bee sting. I
saw the Dr. yesterday and am now taking an RX that should
help, but it makes me VERY sleepy.
I feel that I should not take Roxey for myself because of
several factors. One is my age and the other is Buddy's age
and medical problems. He doesn't "play" anymore, no running
jumping, fetching balls or anything like he used to do. I'm
just grateful he can walk on his own. At my age, I think
I should look around for an older dog who does not require
a lot of the normal exercise like a younger one does. Roxey
is indeed a Sweetheart, and would make an excellent family
friend for a younger couple, or single person. I pray with all
my heart the she finds that home where she can be loved for
the treasure that she is. Thanks so much for all you do for
the lost & homeless dogs of this world. Liz & Buddy.

Roxey got a bath yesterday after Draker went home with Andrew. She is such a sweet heart! I am happy she can stay with me for a while now.

Last night, a coworker of mine called and said that his best friend was interested in Roxey. I posted a sign on out bulletin board in the lunch room and he saw it. His friend has 2 kids, 6 and 9, and they want an adult dog! I told David to tell them I needed to speak with their vet first.

Well, they called me this morning at 7:30! From NY! They will be back tomorrow and I will take Roxey there to check out their yard and interview them. I also called their Vet and he said they had had a senior dog that passed away a year ago. The dog was always healthy and never missed a shot, heartworm pill, or flea preventative!!

Keep your fingers and paws crossed for Roxey!

Souraya, that is wonderful news! So Drake is in Alabama with Andrew and Roxey is staying with you? That will ease the burden a little for this week at least.
I hope this new family works out for Roxey! Does the family live in Georgia or NY?

The family lives in Georgia. They have been in New York for the past week visiting relatives.

I too hope that this works out. From what I understand from my coworker, the mother doesn't work and stays home all day! She is supposedly very active and so Roxey with get plenty of exercise.

Souraya,

Oh, this news sounds so good for Roxey !!! As I said when
we talked on Saturday, Roxey is such a Sweetie & she
deserves the very best home with more active folks. I'm
keeping fingers crossed & praying really hard that this home
will work out for her. They will be lucky to get such a Sweet
girl. All the Best, Liz & Buddy.

Well, I went to visit the family who is interested in Roxey. I really liked them, and they were so nice. On our way home, I got a call on my cell phone from a lady who seen my ad on Petfinder and was interested in Roxey.

She and her husband live on a 10 acre piece of land right on a HUGE lake. They have an 11 year son and the mom works from home. I am going to try and see them early next week and compare homes.

All of a sudden, everyone wants Roxey!!!

Hey Souraya ~

You've found TWO worthy homes for Roxey - but only have one Roxey?

Easy fix - just run out and find another Homeless Dawggie - can be Roxey II :D.

First Family gets Roxey I; and the Second Family gets Roxey II! No problem here!

Then next week, it's Roxey III

He!He!He! Phred, I was actually thinking of taking the family that doesn't get Roxey to the shelter and ask if they want to adopt one from there. I hope they go for the idea.

OK. I got contacted yesterday by yet ANOTHER party who is interested in Roxey! This family is a young newly wed couple. I sent them an e-mail with my questionnaire and will see what they come up with. The lady sounded so nice and sweet. She is also a runner, like me!

I am so excited about having so many homes to choose from for Roxey!

Well, I have finally found the right home for Roxey!

After getting back from Greenville, I headed to Atlanta to meet Amanda who was very interested in Roxey. She and her mom had left me two dozen voicemails each!

Amanda is 26 and is a doll. She is a dertmatologist assisstant and lives in a very nice apartment complex, right across the street from the DOGGY PARK. She was so excited to meet Roxey. She had a welcoming committee there: her parents and sisters! She also had a fresh bowl of water for Roxey and a bag of treats. We visited for a while and Roxey explored the place and got loved on for an hour.

After speaking with Amanda, I decided that is where Roxey will go. She gets spayed this week and will be going to her new mommy on the weekend.

I am so happy that I found her a good home. Amanda is a sweetheart and will take excellent care of her. I think they are a match made in heaven and Roxey loves Amanda! I am so sad to see her go, but I know she will have a great life. I have gotten so attached to her.

Thank you everybody for all you support.

I agree about the fantastic part and also think it would be great if Amanda joined Pet Talk.

Souraya, I am sure if you are comfortable with the new home for Roxey, it is a great place for her to go too! :D

I took Roxey to her new home on Saturday, August 3rd. It broke my heart to see her go, and I cried like a lil baby. But I am so glad that she has a great home to call her own!

I told Amanda about pet Talk and she said she would try and check it out. I have spoken to Amanda several times since last Saturday and she said Roxey was uneasy the first few nights. She thinks Roxey may have been waiting for me :( But she is fine now and is the queen of the house! Amanda just loves Roxey and is so greatful she is in her life.

Here is a picture.
