View Full Version : Plastic update: he also ate THIS! p.3

 Sherman ate the handle off a plastic measuring cup (that should have been inside the food bin, my bad). I found the chewed up cup part, but I'm worried that he may have a 2" hunk in him. He must have eaten it while I was out to dinner. No sure if I should try to make him hurl it up or not. Or if that would cause more damage? I'll go call the after-hours vet and hope he gets back to me soon. :(

Sherman! tht was rather Nawtee!
Is he a very destructive chewer? as in would he have chewed it up tiny? or is he more of a few chews and gulp kinda guy?
It makes a difference only in that if he chews like Rusty its likely to be tiny and will pass soon on its own, if he isn't then you may have more to worry about.
Also I am sure you have already done this but have you looked for the remains of the handle EVERYWHERE?? (hoping that maybe he has it hid for later chewing pleasure kinda like bubble gum  )
I really hope all is well please let us know how he and you are doing, and what the vet reccomends!

Not sure if I should try to make him hurl it up or not.

NawTee Dawg!
I would *NOT* have him try to hurl it up -
IF it is a large piece, it could become wedged and/or do damage coming back up.
Usually the throw-up to eliminate is only done with SOME poisons.
When the Two Mutts gobbled up a 1/2 chicken worth of cooked chicken BONES;
the ER Vet suggested QUICKLY feeding them multiple slices of white BREAD -
idea being to have the partially chewed bread form a "protective wrap" around the bones in their tummies ... and "pad" the trip out the rear end.
I "bagged" and "examined" dawg poop for TWO WEEKS - *watching* for bone fragments.
(Never found a single piece!)
I'd bet the Vet suggests an X-ray be taken.
Best Wishes!

I reached his vet. He told me to give him LOTS and LOTS of fiber tonight, but not to overfeed. (??Didn't really say how much to feed him.)
I mashed a banana into a cup of high-fiber cereal and fed him some. I'll give it to him again in 15 minutes or so. His vet said that usually dogs pass things like this with no problem. I just have to keep an eye on him & his stool for signs of trouble, and be ready to take him in if he gets distressed.
I just talked to his vet last week, and we've been working on changing how I feed Sherman because he's gotten into the habit of inhaling his food. So now I only feed him a small portion, but several times a day. I think he was just plain hungry. I also just found a chewed up empty bag of Yummie Chummies under the table. It was half full earlier tonight. This is the first time he's ever chewed anything up like this & ate it.

I'd just watch him for any signs of distress--difficulty with bowel movements, lethargic, refusal to eat, vomitting. Giving him some bread is a good idea. My vet has suggested that in the past too. Chances are it will pass on it's own without any trouble.

Yummy Chummies are irresistable. Even my cats will rip a bag of them open given a chance!
My dogs have chewed up a fairly amazing number of things(including the windshield wipers right off Stuart's car!). None of them have got a blockage from the chewed up stuff, although it does make for some interesting poop scooping!

OK, I'll go get him some bread too. Thanks for the tip, you guys. I'm worried that if I feed him too much he'll end up with bloat.
Doc Freedman said carrots, bananas, high-fiber cereal, & pumpkin would all be good. I don't have any canned pumpkin, but I do have a small pie pumpkin I could cut up - do you thnk that would be ok?
Glacier, I'm hoping those Yummie Chummies are high fiber.

I hope Sherman is ok and the plastic just passes harmlessly on through his system.
I do want to give you a pat on the back for actually calling the vet at the time you made your post. It's so frustrating for me to see people on here (mostly newbies) with serious medical problems and they're asking advice on a message board rather than calling the vet. Kudos to you!

Bread,
Yummie Chummies,
and a Hunka Plastic ...
Dunno how much more "stuff" you ought to give him tonight!
Bread - 3 or 4 slices - ought to take up most of his extra space ...
Maybe wait to see if anything "appears" by morning;
THEN start adding High Fiber in the front end to complete the "Flush".
Happie "sifting"! :p

Whew, time for bed. He's had at least 16 gr. fiber tonight:
1 c. high-fiber cereal
1 banana
1 carrot
1 slice bread
and his regular dinner.
No signs of distress. No signs of anything outside yet either. At least with snow on the ground, I can follow the tracks to check things out!

For his eating habits- check into that bowl called " Break-fast".. Its a bowl that has like cones in the bottom that forces the dog to take their time to get the food out verses gulping. I have several people that got this bowl, and the results have been great. http://www.brake-fast.net/
Oh Sherman, how could that possibly taste good? It sounds like you have gotten some good advice and are following through. Here's hoping that there will be a smoothe passage for that piece of plastic. :o When Bella was a puppy she ate part of a wooden clothespin that my hubby was using to keep a bag of potato chips closed. I spent quite some time scrutinizing doggie poops after that (my neighbors probably thought I was a little funny in the head as I would take a stick and sort of disect it.....TMI LOL!). At least with snow on the ground it should make your hunt a little easier. Hope Sherman will do just fine. :)

:D All that experience at the dogpark with poop bags is paying off. I nabbed his morning deposit and brought it in to thaw. Poking around was very productive...
several bits of blue plastic (the feeding scoop),
some bits of plastic of indetermined color (not sure what its from),
a piece of foil (the Yummie Chummie package perhaps?)
and one that threw me for a loop -
a green vinyl star about 1/2 " across! I have no idea what that came from  .
Sherman got some more high fiber this morning. I'm still a bit worried about the big chunk coming through, but things look promising. At least the "traffic" is moving!

I'm glad to hear that things seem to me 'moving right along' so to speak :)
We had a husky/wolf mix when i was a lot younger (about 7 years old), and being the little s**t that i was, i was teasing him with a balloon - blowing it up and making it squeak at him - until i lost the grip on it, and it went zipping around the kitchen. *snap* right down the dog. Man, I was in such trouble ;)
My mom frantically called the vet, who gave her some advice about feeding, and if the dog started having issues to bring him in to see them.
So, for the next few days we were dilligent on the poop-patrol, checking for the balloon to make its way out. And, a couple mornings later we came across the most disgusting surprise ... a half blown up balloon attached to a rather large dog offering.
And i guess, alls well that ends well in 'the end' ;)

Pat, I am glad to hear that things are moving along for you, how is feeling otherwise? I really am trying not to giggle but if it makes you feel better we followed Goofy for nearly 4 days, she had eaten a small vial of glitter glue  , needless to say her presents were quite festive! She did eventually pass the top portion a few days later.

So far, it's been very small bits of platic that are showing up. This morning there are some much larger pieces - like 3/4" long and curved - I'm hoping this is the plastic with the loop end of the cup. Sherman also threw up some clear liquid this morning - he's never done that before. I would think that with 3 days of non-stop high fiber, (with plenty of results  ), if he had a blockage, nothing would have gotten through. If he throws up again, I'll check with the vet.
Nobody needs to respond, I'm posting to make myself feel less worried. It's probably nothing.

It's a little late to suggest this ... but have you "saved" the pieces of plastic?
You could get an idea of how much of the missing cup has been "accounted for" -
and how much could still be "undergoing procesing" inside Sherman.
As long as the "production line" is still pushing out "product" ... it's a good sign!
Do you feel "less worried"?
I bet not ... but TRY not to worry (too much). ;)

  That bad boy has been badder than I thought!
When I went to my aunt's funeral Thurs, I had the dog sitter come to give them dinner. I left her a check that would cover my week away & that night in an envelope in front of their food bowls. I talked to her on the phone last night because she left another invoice...
Apparently bad boy Sherman ATE the CHECK!!! She said she had found bits of what looked like envelope when she came in to feed them. She said, "Aren't you glad you didn't leave cash?" We had a good laugh about that!
I got called in to work at the store a few hours Sat. night, and came home to the copies of our 2005 tax return (which I left next to the copier on TOP of my desk) strewn all over the floor, with most of the edges chomped off. I spent Sun. ironing & taping the bits back together so I could send copies to my hubby.
I don't know what's going on with him. I got each of them a huge hoofie to chew on yesterday, maybe he's tired of chewing now, cause everything's intact this morning.

Not to mention that if you dont like the sitter it is customary to play hide and seek and lock her out (yes my kids have done that) not EAT HER PAY!! :p
If this is totally new behaviour , and it is just a thought... I had a Rottie years ago that would chew weird stuff when she was having tooth issues. She wasn't normally a chewer either, and after a few trips to find stuff stuck, bits of grass and twig in her molars, we figured out that when the weird chew stuff happened it was time for a dental.

He was at the vets a couple months ago for a check up, and I don't see anything going on with his teeth. I think he got bored - I was gone for 7 days, no lengthy runs at the dogpark. Maybe he deceided to break a few rules and test out a few "off limits" goodies, and now it's a bad habit. Little bugger ate my chapstick today. In spite of the sub-zero weather, I took them out to the park the past couple days. I had my Lilly at the vet, yesterday, because she started throwing up on Sunday afternoon and it was constant through the night on Sunday night. Dr. Robinson gave her an injection to calm the tummy and also gave her a big dose of Barium, in case he needed to x-ray her for a blockage today. thankfully, the throwing up has stopped. But, my reason for posting is that he told me that he had operated on a Lab (I think it was a Lab), just yesterday, and pulled out two socks and a pair of ladies underwear!!! You are wise to be cautious with Sherman. A couple years ago we operated on a lab whos owner said the dog is always getting into his dirty laundry on the floor. (why the owner keeps putting his laundry on the floor when he knows the dog eats it, is beyond me). Anyways the dog had been vomiting, and not eating. We did barium & x-rays and showed something blocking the intestines. Once we opened the dog up, we removed a perfectly INTACT KNEE HIGH tube sock!! Unfortunately the owners had waited a bit before bringing the dog in, so we also had to remove a small section of intestine. Dog recovered just fine, and I think after the bill, rechecks, and trouble, the owner may be picking up his dirty clothes now. lol

When I read this - I thought of this thread immediately!
RAISINVILLE TOWNSHIP, Michigan(AP) Here is a dog with expensive taste: A pit bull ate its owner's $5,000 wedding ring before being made to throw it up again. Tina Burlett had thought someone broke into her house and stole the custom-made ring. But her grandmother suspected the family dog, Missy.
X-rays showed she was right.
"I couldn't believe it," Burlett told The Monroe Evening News. "I didn't think so at the time, but it's funny now."
Missy has been caught gnawing on VCRs, electric blankets and even Burlett's diamond earring.
"I did have a dog eat a watch once," said Dr. Linda Fung of the Country Creek Animal Hospital. "Animals swallow a lot of stuff. It's not an unusual thing. We just made her throw it up."

Sherman seems to be off his non-food eating binge, (knock on wood)! I'll still keep checking for a few more days, but I think he's in the clear. This morning he even nudged away the cookie treat I gave him, then I watched him take it outside & bury it in the snow. I will pay more attention to leaving things around, sheesh! I'm so happy I don't have any $5000 wedding rings laying about!

This thread just reminded me of an incident long ago. My first born (michael, now a Sophomore in college) came running into our bedroom one Saturday morning some 15 years ago yelling, "Sarah ate a penny, Sarah ate a penny...". Sarah our second born was maybe 2-3 years old. I asked her if she ate a penny to which she said "NO". But her eyes betrayed her (as they always have and still do) I asked her again as she lowered her head and her eyes grew even bigger (the surest of all signs that she was guilty).
"Sarah... did you eat a penny"? No answer. So I tried a different approach, "Sarah honey... where did the penny go"? She opened her mouth and pointed into and downward.
So we called the pediatrician and they told us not to be alarmed, but that we should thoroughly check her bowel movements for the next couple of days. If we didn't find it to call back and they may have to do an Xray.
Fortunately we didn't have to wait long... the next morning we found it in her diapers. Didn't have to do much searching at all.
It was the "SHINIEST" penny I think I have ever seen.
