View Full Version : What is your litter stockpile amount?

We went shopping tonight and after hitting PetsMart and Target I now have 135 pounds of Fresh Step and 35+ pounds of Tidy Cats (for his majesty Ripley). It got me wondering if I'm the only one who stockpiles so much litter? I usually load up when it's on sale and/or I have coupons but I try to have at least 30 pounds on hand always. My reserves.

So how much do you have on hand?

Since i only have one kitty, i just buy one container a week while shopping, so I always have one unopened container on hand.

I'm obsessed with litter stockpiles!

In my bedroom there is a 20 pound jug. Another 20 pound jug under the bathroom sink. a 40 pound pail in the office closet and another 40 pound pail in the pantry. I typically have more but funds are tight, and I just went through 2 20 pound bags of Cat Attract litter a few days ago.

Small apartment, two cats - one 20 lb. bag lasts a couple of weeks and then I restock.

At one time in the summer I had 25 bags of litter about half a ton.
Now I am down to 240 pounds , as they go through 40 pounds a week.
They throw so much out, that I have to have a dust pan to recycle it back in.
The Kitten Trio dig and dig and dig.

At a place called Pet Club they always have Ever Clean on sale once a month so I stocked up and I bought 5 25lb boxes of it. I also still have another 25lb box from a previous time. At Petsmart I like to buy the Odor Eaters litter and they also seem to have this on sale a lot. I have a 20lb jug and a 28lb bucket of this. So I currenty have 198lbs of litter. Wow!!!! I must be obsessed.

I went shopping a few days ago; I bought 10 boxes of 4 kg :) .
My shopping cart was filled completely, which drew lots of attention by other shoppers ;) :p

You people are TOTALLY hilarious! :p

I buy 3 40-pound bags at a time and then go home and use them. (1 bag per floor with a little to spare)

After all, I doubt that there will be a cat litter shortage in the near future. (LOL)

LOL :D

Last time we went shopping there was a special offer with the third pack for free if you buy two. I am usually not fond of these kind of offers as I hate buying a lot and storing things. But my partner insisted and we ended up with two kinds of litter: 3 packs of 8 kg + 3 packs of 4 kg! If you add some canned food and a few treats the shopping cart was full with cat stuff! Nothing for the humans :p

I just remind PTers that we have only two kitties :D

I tend to go once a month to either BJ's or Sam's Club and get 6 40lb containers of Fresh Step or ScoopAway (I can't remember which one) and that will last for a month or more.

When I used to use clay litter, they would put it on sale for .99 cents a bag and I would go in with two carts and pile up 10 bags in each cart....you should see the looks on people's faces when I started rolling through the store with all that cat litter   ....but what you really should have seen was what my car looked like with all that litter in it.

I swear when I come home with all that litter....my babies seem to have a little bit of a glimmer in their eyes....kind of like "YEA HAW!!!! Party in the Kitty Litter Tonight....Come One...Come All!!!"

My cats like Tidy Cats litter. So I stick to that one brand, as I don't need to have 7 cats choosing to ignore the boxes due to a change in litter.
Target will have it on sale about every 6 weeks, for 28 cents per pound. I usually by 6 plastic tubs, 35 pounds each. It gets stored in the garage. Somehow I missed one sale and was running low. As in the only litter in the house was an open tub, about half full. I was getting panicky, then Target had another sale. Whew! Saved. I bought EIGHT tubs this last trip. 280 pounds. My little Honda was NOT happy on the short ride home. :D

I still don't understand why the plastic tubs (plastic is an oil product, right?) can cost less than the boxes.

We have yellow plastic tubs all over the place. Dad loves them for carrying fertilizer from the shed to his vegetable garden. And all his small tools go in yellow tubs to move from one project to the next. He uses them to bring in his dahlia bulbs (and others) for the winter, then to carry them out again in the Spring. No project gets completed in a day. So we have yellow litter tubs as lawn ornaments.

I got a 40 lb bag of Sweat Scoop for Cocoa Kitty. That's the most I have on hand at a time (for my 1 kitty) and I have a plastic container I put it in.

Mine is on, partially used container, just in case. We only have one cat now, Butter, and he chooses to "go" outdoors. He knows the litter box is there, but he rarely uses it.

I am so fortunate that my girls are not picky about their litter. I buy a generic brand of clay litter for $1.00 per bag at the Dollar Store! I buy 2 bags per week as there are 2 litter boxes in the apartment. (Yes, my girls have more bathrooms than I have!  ) Sometimes I will buy 4 bags and have the extra 2 on hand.

I change their boxes once a week, and try to scoop every couple of days. If I don't, Tabitha will get disgusted and decide to pee wherever she pleases! And sometimes it is right in front of me, as if out of spite if I haven't cleaned the bathroom! :::hrmph:::

Being proudly owned by my 11 furbabies, and supplying them with 5 litter boxes, I usually go thru 80 to 100lbs of liter (Tidy Cat) a week, keeping one 35lb bag on hand. I buy mine at Publix because it is actually cheaper than at Pet Smart and I spend a lot at Pet Smart every week. In addition to my 11 at home, I have three stray/feral colonies that I feed daily. Reading this thread today has really brightened my day. Ahh, the things we do for our babies.

It's good to read that other people get raised eyebrows when they roll their loaded carts to the checkout. To the few impertinent people who have asked "HOW MANY cats do you HAVE?!!", I've responded (with my one raised eyebrow) "Two. I dislike shopping." Then I just have to hope they don't see me a month later with another heavily loaded cart. I have a stockpile of Feline Pine in the garage, about 5 large bags, because it was on special a few months ago. I'm out of World's Best and must pay a visit to PetsMart this weekend. That stuff is expensive so I'll buy four bags if it isn't on special and twelve bags if it is.

Since two of my nineteen cats, one very old and one disabled, use newspaper on linoleum floor, I also lug home bags of used newspapers from the library every other day. So, yes, I do have a large stockpile of litter related stuff, I hadn't realized until now because it's routine.

Lut - that comment to Jen was hilarious, I'm still laughing.

I stock up on cat litter - and other heavy things in the autumn, while the weather is good enough to cycle, as that is my way of transport.

I think I have three 5 kg bags in the cellar and the one up here.

LUT you are killing me here :D I burst out laughing that and now keep on giggling!!!

As for the litter question - I usually have 2 large (28 pound??) buckets of Fresh Step. They will last a few weeks. I seldom stock more ahead than that as I have never seen any good sales on Fresh Step.

Debbie - this week Target has the 28lb + 5 more lbs free for $10. I got a free $10 Target gift card for filling a new prescription last night so it was like a free bucket! Yippee!! Also, I have a printable PetsMart coupon for $5 off $15 for PetsPerks card members and if you take the Target ad in they will match the price. They had the 28lb + 3 more lbs free. I'm always trying to get the bargains. Richard was laughing at all my coupon/pricematching/gift card deals for litter last night.

Pet Supplies Plus has a brand called Premium Choice Scoopable, and from time to time they have 25-lb. and 40-lb. bags on sale. I used to stock up every time. The back seat of my car.. the trunk.. a corner in my bedroom.. were full of bags of litter. Since I was running out of places to store them, I decided to start working through them before adding more to the supply. I think the ones in the car are finally all out, but I still have several bags in the bedroom corner. The thought crossed my mind recently that maybe it's getting to be time to start watching for sales again.

Hey, we're always going to need it, sooner or later!

Litter users - I was thinking of switching Cassie from clay to clumping litter -- right now we use Tidy Cats with either the blue or red stripe on the label and I'm not unhappy, but I'd like to change the entire box less often. I get the 10-pound bag of Tidy Cats at the supermarket because the monster bag (although a better bargain) is heavy! The shelter used clay litter so we've stuck with that all these years - is it too late to switch to clumping litter?

No hubby, just me ... every now and again I borrow my upstairs neighbor's wheeled shopping basket, thank goodness for that and a building with an elevator because my parking space is a long walk from the door with a big bag of cat box filler. When the monster size is on sale, and my neighbor is home to lend me his shopping basket, that's a wonderful combination of events.

I have enjoyed reading this thread and I know what Jen and Lizzie and everyone else that has more than a few cats feels like when they go to buy litter. I have always used Tidy cat clay and use to get the 30 lb bags at Walmart because that was the cheapest price but their prices went up and I started getting forty lb bags at Petsmart. The problem with that thought is my bad bache and bursititis and me trying to carry mulitple bags inside. It was too hard on my back so I started getting 20lb bags at Petsmart for 2.99. I have to get at least 6 bags a week for my gang. I go through at least 80 lbs of litter a week and sometimes more if the diabetics sugar is high. I would love to be able to buy ahead but with having to get so much I barely can get what I can for that week. Eventually I would like to get ahead but right now it is jsut impossible. I also hear the comments"My God, how many cats do you have?" etc

This thread is great. It just goes to show how you all care so much for your babies. I don't stock up as I don't need to, only having the two. I use a generic clumping litter and they get along fine with it. In fact any litter that I get if I get something that's cut down or on offer they never turn their nose up at. I'm very lucky I don't have litter problems with them.

Reading this thread makes me realise how great everybody on this forum really is!! :D :D :D :D

Since the fire, I have been to busy unpacking and such - I didn't realize the cats only had 20 pounds of litter left! That doesn't last them very long (clumping clay). I think I am going to switch to something more natural, hopefully it will last longer. :p

I used to stockpile EVERYTHING! From cat litter to paper towels to Cheerios and Chicken Noodle soup for Terry. When we moved into the motorhome, I learned in a big hurry that stockpiling wasn't going to be allowed anymore. Do you know how hard it is to break the stockpiling habit?  :o

Sometimes I stockpile Feline Pine if Bi-Lo has a good price on it. I do stockpile the canned food and pouches that my kitties like as treats when thye are on sale.

I stockpile other stuff that is on sale too. I also hate shopping and like to save money.

I like the Tidy Cat's Small Spaces and awhile ago Pet Supplies Plus had them on sale for #27 $5!
So I bought all they had.
So I usually have at least 2 or 3 on hand. For awhile I was storing the litter in a small (18 gal) tote and was buying Walmart's Clumping in the #25 boxes. I ended up having like 100+ pounds of litter in the tote! :)
I also like Fresh Step and Scoop Away.
I liked the Everclean but it comes in cardboard boxes and I figgered out last year those don't work to well out in the garage with the wind blowing in the snow and the rain. So I try to stick to the plastic containers if I'm going to keep it in the garage. I don't really like to use the bags either b/c of the above reason.

I usually by 2- 40# at a time and that lasts me a month. Our PetSmart is in Baton Rouge so I don't go but once a month... thank God we don't have one closer! (I'd be there every day and have to get a second job!)

Next Question is... How much toilet paper do you have in your house for the humans? (bet everyone has more cat litter than T paper like I do!)

I've been getting that for my Dad's cat Miss Kitty. It really seems to have helped with litter box odors in his house and I don't notice as much dust.

I buy my litter (Arm & Hammer scoop) in 30# boxes. I prefer to have at least 2-3 boxes on hand at any given time. However if it's on super sale I'll buy as many as 6 boxes (that's 180lbs of litter!)

At Petsmart I like to buy the Odor Eaters litter and they also seem to have this on sale a lot. I have a 20lb jug and a 28lb bucket of this.

I've seen the Odor Eaters brand there, but haven't tried it. How does it work? Does it clump really well??

I have tried the Nature's Miracle litter, which I thought worked really well, but a few of my guys downstairs refused to use the litter box if it only had that in it. So, I had to put in other clumping litter to go with it. The fosters upstairs used it and had no issues with it.

Normally when I go to PetSmart, I would buy 4-5 of the largest boxes of the Exsquisicat brand clumping litter. I thought it worked ok, and for the money, it was good. I do like the new formula that Scoop Away is using. It's been clumping great, and works well on the smell.

I guess normally I have about 2 - 40lb pails unopened, plus one opened pail in each foster room and then another open pail in the downstairs for Furbee's potty in the kitchen, and another open pail in the "litter room" on the 2nd floor. The manager at PetSmart said the last time I stocked up "Either you have a lot of cats, or there's a mountain lion in your house!" LOL!

Yes, I think it does but I also mix it with the unscented Everclean. I also like the fact that it has a nice smell that's not overpowering like some of the scented litters.:) Catnapper was the one who started using it and started a thread about it so I decided to give it a try.

Usually about 60 pounds (27 kg) on hand... If I can't find a sale then a trip to Costco is in the cards.
