I was wondering if anyone has trained thier cat to do something besides go potty in their litter box? :D
I know many people think cats are not trainable, but I know better. My cat is not trained....well, maybe that's not true. He knows how to wake me up so I will feed him. hee hee

So if you have trained your cat to do something, please share what and how you trained them.

Nope, but all my cats HAVE trained ME! I know almost exactly what they want when they start making demands: Food, food, and MORE FOOD! Ha ha.

My cats are sort of trained. They know how to sit, come when called, and stand.

Cocoa Kitty is a very good boy! He sits, stands, turns in a circle on command, stays, comes when I call him (most of the time)and walks on a leash. I think he enjoys the challenge, extra attention, and occasional treats. I would teach him even more things if I could think of them!

Vixen comes when called, speaks when spoken to, walks on a leash, and stays (usually).

But the list of things she has me trained to do is much much larger. :p

Snow can sit, stay, come when called and open a door!
Mickey can give high fives, sit and come when called!

Wow!! This is soo cool to see so many trained cats. However, no one shared how they got their cats to do these things. I would assume you would do it along the same lines as a dog. But could someone share with us, in case anyone else would like to try with their kitty??

Spot will sit on command. He also knows high five. I can also hold out the palm of my hand and say Paw, Nose, or Head, and he will touch whatever I called to the palm of my hand. Might be time for an appearance on Stupid Pet Tricks. ;)

Sometimes, if I say "kiss, kiss" my cat will lick my hand. If we say "You want some foo foo?" he knows we're asking if he's hungry. Also, my dad's taught him "look at the birdie" and "look at the kitty" whenever he says it, Gin looks out the window all over to find what we see. He also knows what "outside" means. I guess he's pretty smart heheheh.

And I have seen a cat walk on a leash, very surprising...my cat HATES leashes and collars.

Yeah I've taught Leo tricks.. I just used the same methods as with dogs (which basically means treats.. Can't really get a cat excited on just praise).
So far he will sit, lay down and lift his paw on command. I am working on "flip" which means he turns around in a circle.. So far it has been going well. :)

It does take longer to train a cat.. and it takes a whole lot more patience.. and I doubt I would be able to train any other cat besides Leo.
Leo is very dog-like in behaviour. He has always been around dogs and copies their behaviour quite a lot.

All of my four cats are trained to a certain extent. I've had more luck with the boys (ages 10 and 4) than the girls (ages 12 and 15). I'm not sure if that is an sex thing or not.

Foppa showed up partly trained. He isn't very food motivated but does really want to please me and that helped a lot. Lots of positive reinforcement for him and I ignore him when he's done something I don't want him to. He lives for praise. He knows the most - sit, down, up, off, come, go, go to crate, out, stay and his name.

Twain is my newest boy, I've only had him six months. Once he catches on to what I want he's brillant, getting there can be a challenge though. He's highly food motivated though and this helps a LOT! lol He knows his name, come, sit, go and we are working on stay. Stay is going very s-l-o-w-l-y. Quite honestly though, he has been easier to train that my dog in some ways. I taught him everything he knows using the same postive techniques I used for my dog, mainly using lures.

The girls (Essence and Abby Noel) know their names, come, go, up, out and sit. They aren't interested in learning much more.

My newest kitty Phinehas has the potential to be trained I think, but I have no idea how to start or even attempt such a thing. He is very observant and really watches what I do. By doing so, he learned how to open a completely closed door by turning the handle. This was a first for me. He has learned his name fairly quickly, and *usually* comes when I call his name.

I would really love to train him to do some other things, but have no idea where/how to start. Suggestions would be great! :D

Hmmm, let me see.... They've trained me to get their food, drop everything and cuddle or rub their tummies, open the door to the yard... oh, wait a minute, you meant ME train THEM? :D

I don't know if I'd call mine trained- it's more like routine oriented. They all come when called. Oliver knows he has to eat separate from the other cats so when I call all the others to their bowls Oliver knows to go to my bedroom and wait for me.

Jimmy gives hugs, I didn't really train him to do that though. He started doing it on his own, but it evolved and now if I stand near him and say "hug" he knows I want one (and he usually gives me one).

I think we trained the cats not to do things (like get on the table or counters) more than we trained them to do things.
