Where did you buy your pets?? A shelter, breeder, pet shop, a friend or did you just rescue them off the street?

Well, let's see:
My dad bought Angel from my grandpa's friend because their cat had kittens. Snow was bought by my mom's boyfriend from a shelter.
So let's see, I voted for friend and shelter :)

xcolbi
01-06-2007, 05:18 PM
I got Colbi from the local SPCA. She and her brother were brought it because they were abused. :(

Tango is from a friend's accidental litter and is the only one I could vote for.

Winston and Morgan are rescues, but we didn't find them as strays. We adopted them from breed specific rescues.

Piper's a foster, and we took her from an abusive situation. Tia was born here, after we rescued her mom.

My Toller will be from a great breeder, and as will most of my future dogs I'm sure.

Breeder for Goofy, we wanted a show dog again. The dobies are from Breed rescues, so didnt vote them in. 2 Cats are shelter kitties the others were a feral rescue (can we say sucker and foster failure? ) Guinea piggies were from the school, teach didn't want them back after we took them for summer vacation. Snakes were a rescue.Birds 3 were a gift 20 yrs ago and the other 2 were a rescue. Rats from a pet store as snake food (again can we say sucker...............) :D

My three oldest are from shelters.

My newest was brought to me by someone saying they found him on the streets. We believe he was really their dog and they wanted to get rid of him.

I got my first dog from a pet store. I was in college, was very young and knew nothing about puppy mills, BYB's, or pet stores. That will NEVER happen again!

My second dog came from my friends, who were getting divorced, selling their house and moving. They couldn't keep her, so I took her. Best gift I've EVER gotten from a friend.

After that, I got involved with humane societies and rescues, and that is where all my other dogs came from.

Except for Rosie, whom I bought for my husband's birthday last year. I bought her from a breeder ... something I NEVER thought I'd do. But, my husband had his heart set on a brindle, female English bulldog puppy. Not much chance of that in rescue or shelters. I looked long and hard for the best breeder I could find, believe me.

Muskwa came from a breeder, Earle is Muskwa's son.

15 of the dogs are former shelter residents, mostly long term shelter dogs. Most of them were there for at least a year.

The rest of the dogs came from other mushers for one reason or another, except for Bandit who I essentially stole from a former neighbor.

I voted pet store, Tia came from a pet shop whose owner we know quite well and have faith in her animal knowledge.

The gerbils actually came from a garden centre, in the pet section!

Almost all of my pets were rescues I got through my previous job. We have a couple that we bought before I got that job though. We also have a few that came from friends or family.

Two of my dogs were strays on the street. My dane, I got from a breeder. One of my cats came from a friend who had a litter. The two other cats I inherited when my grandmother died. Actually, they inherited me! :D

Cassie came to me from Harmony House for Cats, which is a cageless, no-kill, cats-only shelter in Chicago. My sister's RB cats both came to her from a relative, a veterinarian - they had been brought to his office after being found outdoors.

Taz_Zoee
01-07-2007, 02:20 PM
I voted friend, because in a round about way that is how we got Taz.
Zoee we got from a breeder, not a BYB though.
Although, since I have been on this site for the past few months...any future animal I get will definitely be from a shelter or rescue org.

01-07-2007, 05:37 PM
All of our pets came from so many different places.

Frisk & Don were the only ones from a breeder.
All the rest are basically rescues, either gotten from friends, as strays, shelters, or from neglectful petstores.
Not everyone can be counted as rescues, though, as some came from pretty good care. =]

Cracker and Ginger were from a breeder, Selena (red tail boa) was a rescue of sorts from my brother, one guinea pig (Ruby) was a rescue, my RB beardie Dragon was a rescue, the second guinea pig, (Oreo) was from Petco (they only had males on petfinders in my area and I needed a second female for companionship, etc), and my rats were first bought for food for Selena but I couldn't feed the girls so I have four rats.

All of my dogs and cats have either come from shelters, friends, family or as Strays!!

Now my bunnies and fish came from pet stores.

My Chickens came from Breeders.

Daisy and Delilah
01-07-2007, 06:30 PM
Daisy was from an accidental litter from a friend. Delilah was owned by an elderly man that had to be put into a nursing home and his elderly wife couldn't keep her. The lady was about 75% blind and she already had another dog. Both would have been too much for her.

all of mine were from "free" adds in the paper, except Ginger. Ginger is my mom's dog that she inherited from her mother when she passed away from cancer in 2003. Miagi was found in some lady's basement and she couldn't keep him so she gave him to us and Tiger was found on the highway with another cat that were dumped and these nice people took them into foster them and couldn't keep them so they gave us a choice of Tiger or the other cat but brought out Tiger first and I fell in love and the rest is history. :) we do plan to adopt always and we have never ever bought any of our pets from breeders, except hamsters when I was younger.

Pam
01-09-2007, 05:30 AM
Bella came from a breeder.

Ripley came from a shelter.

Trevor was originally bought from a pet shop by my son's friend for his grandmother whose cat had just died. His grandmother wasn't ready for another cat so my son took him and brought him home to me. Trevor became my first cat, sort of accidentally. :)

Andy came from a yard sale. My mom's friend was having a yard sale and a neighbor walked over with Andy in her arms and asked if anyone wanted him. My mom said "my daughter will want him" and she came home and called me on the phone to come and get him. :)

I got my rabbit Kishii from the pet shop, she was the last girl there living in such a small little area and she was a bigger bunny so no body wanted her cause she wasn't a little baby, so she caught my heart and now I love her so much and we have such a great bond!
When I was 4 we got my siamese cat Bobo from a Breeder.

And my big Queen hybred fish I got from the pet store and another one of my fishes I got from my friend's pond!

I would get from shelters but my parents are kind of against it unfortunately:(

Kalei
01-09-2007, 05:22 PM
Unfortunately they are against it because they are scared about what they might get from a shelter, that an animal might be too old or have a bad problem or be sick or aggressive. That's the way they feel , I don't like it either, I think buying from shelters is great, but they feel like the would be getting a pet that is going to cause problems and will cost alot of money. They aren't as much pet people as me and my sister are. But when I don't live with my parents anymore I am certainly going to adopt animals from the shelter:D

 Why would they be against saving lives?

Well I got my pet from a very nice breeder! :)

Husky15
01-09-2007, 10:11 PM
 Why would they be against saving lives?
Our parents have nothing against saving lives and they have nothing against shelters. In fact, my mother has encouraged me to support a shelter in the future if I wish to do so. But they, personally, choose not to buy from shelters because of the reasons Kalei mentioned -- they do not know what to expect. And also, they just don't have the money to pay for anything serious that can go on with the shelter animal. They just believe that because of the fact that no one really does know their past, something could happen.

Personally, I am all for shelters and stick up for them and have told people of the things going on and why I prefer shelters over pet-stores. But, I think that it is one's own personal decision. I have told my mother countless times that the dog I buy in the future is going to be from a shelter, and she has nothing against it and tells me to go for it.

Where did you buy your pets?? A shelter, breeder, pet shop, a friend or did you just rescue them off the street?

The first two dogs when i was born i have no idea where Dad got them from. The fishies came from Meijer and Ocean Odyssey. The newts came from OO. Two of my budgies came from Meijer, one from Walmart. My Rat Terrier came from a breeder (UKC, but she was only $35.) King (GSD) was rescued from a neighbor's. I rescued Trio (orange DSH) from a farm (a day before being sent to the pound.) Jasper (black DSH) was from a rescue. Koli was rescued from the pound. Many other dogs in the past that i saved directly from the streets. Either found their owners or good homes. Almost saved a stray kitty too, but he? disappeared the night before his vet apt.
