As you know, many cats spit up once in a while. I forgot the reason why they do this. Anyway, my cat Midnight was in the garage yesterday, when she started coughing. She spit up a little bit, and then the behavior continued for about ten minutes. We tried giving her water, but she wouldn't drink it. I don't think this is the usual spit-up procedure. Could it be because we are not giving her enough water, food, or am I wrong?

Just to let you all know, DavidM is my brother. So you don't get confused with the same pets we talk about. David, I think it may because of the heat. Although, Midnight did eat before she spit up............

It could be that whatever it was she was trying to spit up didn't come. Many times when my cats have hairballs and it all doesn't come up, they will continiue to hack and cough for along time. I would only worry if it continiues. You may just want to try some hairball control goop. :D
WELCOME!! Hope you enjoy this board! :D

Yes, I agree that it's probably a hairball. Sometimes my cats start coughing and nothing comes up either. Now I give them laxastat every other day and it seems to help. Good luck.http://www.stopstart.fsnet.co.uk/smilie/flowerface.gif

Welcome David_M - hope you enjoy Pet Talk and be careful - you'll get addicted!!
I'm sure Midnight had a hairball that wouldn't come up.
Sometimes one of my three gets a 'stuck hairball' and from the noise you'd think they were breathing their last!!
Has Midnight got access to grass? If they eat it - it seems to help somehow in dislodging the offending hairball.
Good luck.
Lynne
