Favourite Breed

I'm considering a few breeds of dog, and although I'm strongly favouring a Brittany, I'd like to get some other opinions. Vote on the poll, and if you want, tell me why you like the breed you chose. I've always found you can learn more about a breed from people that love the breed rather than from an all-breed website or book.

I like the Brittany the best out of those. They're energetic, eager to please/learn, active, and loyal dogs. I also like their appearance/colours. I dn't know a whole lot else about them though.

I have never owned any of those breeds, but I have known some.
Brittanys are your typical gun dog. Just as Orangutango described them from my experience.
Basenji are very smart, like to keep clean, and can not be off leash. They are very independent and won't listen if they don't feel like it.
Soft-Coated Wheaten Terriers are not really all that terrier-like in temperament. They are generally easier to train and less stubborn.
I havn't known any Whippets myself but have heard from many they make excelent pets, and dispite their fragile appearence can stand up to quite rough play.
I've also never known any Lakeland Terriers but heard from many they are like Irish Terriers, who can be stubborn if they feel like it. If you want to keep their coat looking good you'll have to hand strip it or pay someone to, or else you can just shave them but you'd loose the integrity and texture of the coat.

I'd probably pick the wheaten terrier even though I've never had, or known anyone that had these kinds. I've read lots about them though and they all sound like they would make a great dog, so no matter which dog you pick you can't go wrong.

I think terriers are cute though, so that's probably the main reason i'd go with them. But, I think that the little basengis are so cute! They're so different from most dogs. So, really I don't know which you should get, but I know all would make a good friend.

Whippet. I was never too fond of Basenji yodeling, LOL. Also, you must watch your food intake for your Basenji. For some reason, I live in Basenji-ville and many of these dogs are pretty overweight. They also have a good stamina, but I take it from your username that you're a terrier guy so you should be used to high energy dogs. Whippets are basically smaller Greyhounds but with more spunk. They are greyt jogging pals as they can build up a lot of endurance and their speed for that size is phenomenal.

What exactly are you looking for, though? I can't personally see myself with any dog from the sporting group, but I've always loved Brittanys for their appearance.

Whippets. Love the breed, SO much. They're really sweet, so they might not be the best if you're looking for a good guard dog.

I chose the Brittany :) I grew-up with one next-door. One thing I like about the Brittany is that they are still an all-purpose breed, meaning there aren't "show" Brittanies and "hunting" Brittanies. Although the "Spaniel" has been officially dropped for several years, I love spaniels and still include the Brittany in that group. However, they are a high energy breed! If you do not plan on hunting with a Brittany, their energy has to have another physical outlet. Like other gun dog breeds, the Brittany is very people oriented. Interactive exercise is mandatory for the breed, otherwise unspent energy will result in destructive behavior. In the U.S. the Brittany is allowed in: orange spotted, liver spotted, tri-color spotted as well as any of these colors in roan. In their native France (& other parts of Europe) the Brittany is also allowed in black spotted.

A Brittany is the only one on the list I have known well (thought I have met some whippets and a Basenji) so I had to go with that, since the Brittanys I have known have all been wonderful dogs.

i voted Basenji..i would never own one, they are not the breed for me..but my i know someone who has 2 and i love their clownish attitudes :)

Just noticed that a few posts mentioned that Basenji and Brittanys are high-energy breeds. That's one of the main reasons why I chose the breeds that are there. I don't want to open up a debate as to whether it is o.k. to bike with your dog, but if I got any of those dogs except for the Lakeland, I would fully intend on running it with my bike using this thing called a Springer (http://www.springerusa.com/) WHEN IT WAS FULLY GROWN. IMO, it is the safest way to bike with your dog. And no, I am not an idiot owner that would drive my dog to exhaustion.

I think bike riding with your dog is a great form of exercise! I wish I could do that with Tango, as I know it'd be the quickest way to tire her out and she lives to run. However, it's illegal in my city "thanks" to irresponsible owners who actually did run their dogs to the point of death, they were so exhausted.

I chose Brittany...
Although I havent owned one, I showed one brittany in show, so I got to know her a little..Brittanys ar active gundogs, that need exercise..They ar fun, however I wouldnt own one, it´s just not my type of dog!

None of those dogs on the list is my favorite. I think baesnji is unique because of it has a exotic looking. I'm more into molosser type so I would say cane corso is one of my favorite breeds. I like many dogs so I don't care what kind. :)
