Are sweet potato slices (raw) good for dogs? Jenny seems to like them and eats them everytime we make them, but I was thinking, it isn't something a dog would eat in the wild, is it? All these natural diets. :p

Stanly Coren has mentioned carrots and hard veggies being good for dogs... But would sweet potatos fall under that category? They do clean her teeth really well.

Oh, and the most she has in a sitting is half a medium sweet potato, cut into thirds. (she's about 30 lbs)

:)

Sweet pototoes are excellent for dogs. Mine also like yellow squash. And green beans. Rich in beta caratine etc... I am glad she likes them!! Good choice! :D

The night before Thanksgiving I was making Sweet Potato Casserole and had left over mashed sweet potatoes so I mixed some in the pup's food. Buddy took a big mouth full of food and spit it out! Sierra never came near it!

Wow, guess they are an aquired taste. Nah, Jenny's liked them since the first day she tried them. She'd eat anything, though

As I read all these posts about giving dog people food, I have to wonder why I have always been under the impression you should not give your dog people food? The only people food we give Zoee is carrots. Am I missing something?

People food is food made by people, over processed junk food. Also don't feed your dogs garbage/table scrapes. If you wont eat it it's not really good for them either.

What do they make dog food out of if not food? Meat veggies so on.

Just avoid the bad guys like onions, grapes, and chocolate.

But as treats if you want to feed a fully home made diet study up on it a bit first.

I have fed raw for now 19 years. ( looked it up today) and veggies always were a part of this. Its natural in beta caratine, but not processed to loose the b vitamins like heat processing does..
I just had to change for a month to feeding a very good, but still commercial diet. ( solid gold) . However- we are going back to raw after the 2nd week in January.

Well, this is good to know. I had to drill it into my boyfriends head not to feed Zoee from the table, that's for other reasons, so she won't beg.
I don't know if I can tell him she can eat food other than her dog food, since I have been so adamant on not doing it.
I think I will look into it though. Thanks.

The only bad thing about them would be that a good chunk of dogs tend to be allergic to them - they get itchy feet. But it sounds like she enjoys them and has no problems! Eat on, Jenny!

There is a big difference between table scraps and natural fruits, veggies, and raw meats.

Us humans tend to put a lot of grease, butter, fats, and seasonings into our foods when cooking. This isn't good for us or the pups!

Now, a completely raw, untouched piece of meat, vegetable, or fruit is wonderful for a dog!

Do a search here on Pet Talk for many threads about the raw diet. Also, if you look in this same section you will see an example of the meals many of our dogs eat daily on the raw diet. :)

There are alot of raw diet feeders here. And many threads on this. I am only off it for a month for my health reasons and who is going to be caring for the dogs to make it easier on them.

Thats okay- without knowing about a raw diet, you would not have known this is a good veggie for dogs. ( actually one of the best..)

Wellness Dog Food makes a Fish and Sweet Potato. So my guess would be that raw sweet potatoes would be okay. :)

Kia loves most fresh fruits and veggies. I haven't really had a chance to see what Chipper would or would not like. He did refuse a carrot though!

I'm sure I could find one somewhere, but I'm a tad bit lazy. Anyone know of a good site for raw diet? I'm just curious about what kinds of foods, treats, etc. it involves and the reasoning, if any, behind it.

Dave, here are two of my favorite raw websites...

http://www.rawfeddogs.net/
http://www.rawlearning.com/

Feel free to ask any questions. I'm fairly new to raw and haven't been able to feed raw in a while due to lack of time, but If I can't answer I am sure someone else could. :)

By the way, you MUST post some pictures of your Presa!

http://www.barfworld.com/ Here is another good site. It explains the process. I have been feeding raw ( BARF ) for 19 years. I am only on a commercial kibble diet for a month because of health reasons, and making it easier to prepare for care takers of my dogs.
I can set up a diet if you wish. However I need to do this off line as it has to do with the age of the dogs, the weight, the type of breed etc. There are rules of thumb here- adults 2 percent body weight broken over two meals and puppies meaning not full grown at 5 percent then down to 3 percent to 2 percent body weight. It sounds complicated at first, but I am pretty sure I could set you up with a raw diet that is not hard to do.

Thank you both very much for responding so promptly. I have been wondering since some of our clients praise it so much. Again I'm sure I could have eventually found something worthwhile, as far as information, but you all just made it even easier. I will definately look into it, and thank you both for offering to help me get started if I do decide to go BARF!

Oh I would love to post some pics but the ones I have are too large and I have no idea how to make the banners that everyone else has.
