View Full Version : Please pray for Daisy...SHE GOES TO THE BRIDGE TOMORROW 12/26

It is with a heavy heart that I tell you that I took Daisy to the vet tonight and she has lymphosarcoma and has between 6 weeks and 6 months to live. We are giving her prednisone and will give her Life Extension from Solid Gold to try and buy her some time.
This just isn't right. We have lost 2 babies in the last year, I lost my dad in July, and my best friend from school last month...how much more do I have to deal with?
And to top it off...Mike's partner is being an a-hole and my principal walked out of our meeting today in a hissy because the Union showed up and I am the new rep...I'm going to have a nervous breakdown before this is all over.

Oh honey- I am so sorry... I do not know what to say. Sometimes they do make longer, but its the lack of pain that decides.
You and your baby are in my thoughts and prayers. I just wish I knew what to say...

I am so very sorry. I can pretty much say I know how you feel. I lost my dad this year, too. There was a point after Duke was gone that I was barely hanging on. I hope you can have some quality time before it's time to say goodbye. If you need to talk, please pm me. I know where you're coming from, believe me. I almost had one myself.

Daisy was the name of my lymphoma puppy. She lasted 1 yr and 3 days with a 7.5 month first remission via the LCOPA Chemo protocol. There is another protocol that has been giving 1.5-2.5+ yr remissions. If I had known about it, I definitely would have run my Daisy through it. If you are interested send me an Email. Chemo is a costly and time consuming endeavor. With the right supportive drugs the dog won't have any problems.
Treating with Prednisone alone will give the dog a remission of 30 days. You'll see dramatic improvement on Prednisone alone within a couple of days evidenced by the lymph glands going down, increased appetite, and higher energy. However, once you administer Prednisone alone for over a week, it becomes the only treatment option, as it will readily induce Chemo resistance to the main-stay drugs such as Vincristine and Doxorubicin. So if you are interested in more than 30 days, then Chemo needs to be started very very soon. With the Prednisone alone after about 30 days the cancer will come back with a vengence. The dog will usually get a secondary infection, and go extremely fast. The option of no treatment yields a painful death over a period of 4-6 weeks. So Prednisone for its pallative effect has value, as the end comes quickly with minimal suffering.
In the immediate term watch for a secondary infection. With the Prednisone killing the cancer cells literally by the billions, the resulting debris in the bloodstream yields an environment that favors a septicemia. If you don't have one, get a retal digital thermometer. Any sign of weakness, or increased lethargy, anorexia, take the temperature. If 103+ head for the nearest Emergency Vet, and demand antibiotic treatment. Infections in lymphoma puppies are life threatening.
The only supplement known to make a difference in life expectency when combined with Chemo is fish oil (Omega-3s), plus Arginine. Do NOT supplement with Flax seed oil. Without Chemo, the fish oil might still be of use by helping to normalize lactic acid levels in the blood which will help the dog feel better. Avoid sugars, and carbohydrates as they will be speed up cancer growth. Do not trust in the so called holistic remedies.

Daisy has been better the last 2 days. Keep praying for that miracle cure! I know that the prednisone only works for about a month, but, hopefully the Life Extension will help some too. I am going to contact the holistic vet and see what she suggests as well. I want to work with both vets on this one. Mike has also been doing Reiki on her and that seems to be helping her get around better and eat better.
Thank you all for your support on this one and your prayers and good thoughts. It means a lot.

I just wanted to let you know that there is a chance that Daisy may, in fact, have just plain old lymphoma and not lymphosarcoma. If that is the case, then there is a possibility that the prednisone could put her into remission for up to a year and a half. Please pray really hard that if she can't be totally cured that we can have her at least that long.
Thank you again for all of your support through this difficult time.

Lymphoma and Lymphosarcoma are the same term. You should read the following information on Lymphoma:
Cancer in the Canine (http://labbies.com/cancer2.htm#Lymphoma)
In particular read the prognosis section.
Although the web page was created over 3 yrs ago it's still very accurate. The only information not up to date is that the monoclonal antibody (Mab 231) treatment is no longer available. The company making the Ab withdrew it because they couldn't make enough money producing and marketing the Ab treatment. Again, the above site is a good starting point for learning about Lymphoma or Lymphosarcoma.

I've been studying it. I am going to stick with what the vet tells me to do...she's excellent and I trust her. And there is a difference in the 2 in everything I'm reading. The Life Extension and Reiki seem to be helping as well. She has much more energy and she is playing with the other dogs again!
Please keep the prayers and good thoughts and energy coming!! They seem to be working. Thank you to all of you for your support.

She seems to do better before she eats...strange, but, she is still hanging in there. I think the vet wants to see her in a couple of weeks to see if she can better determine the problem and better estimate our options.

You could try an Elspar treatment. It usually gives dramatic results in shrinking the tumors (e.g. 50-60% shrinkage in 6-8 hrs, 90-100% in 36 hrs). Side affect: Allergic reactions can occur. If your dog is still on Prednisone that would suppress any allergic reactions. Also secondary infections may occur due to the huge amount of tumor lysis that occurs. The effects of the drug lasts 7-10 days.

She is now refusing food...even canned. She continues to drink, but, that's all. I hate this so much. Unfortunately, there will be no Christmas miracle at the Kendall household....just solidifying my hatred for this holiday. I am not going to prolong her agony. I hope that she can last until Tuesday morning so that we don't have to go to the emergency vet to do this.
Thank you all for your support through all of this. I hope that I can convince Mike to just stay home tomorrow and spend what time we can with her.

I do think you have had a Christmas miracle of sorts that she has lasted this long. She will still be in our prayers that she makes it to Tuesday - does she adore candy canes like my Gracie (Great Dane) did? If so, sneak her one for me, if it'll tempt her, okay?

When my people found out I had canine osteosarcoma last year they were terribly upset. After my amputation I was in much less pain and I tried to explain to them that we dogs enjoy a better life by the time we're three than most humans do their entire life. I learned that from Cesar Milan's book, but I'm eight now and can attest its true ... The time I have left with the people who love me is icing on the cake!
We all send our best wishes for coping with the loss of Daisy. My people found it therapeutic to set up a website about my recovery and palliative care. Visit www.tripawds.com (http://www.tripawds.com) for photos and movies of me and other tripod cancer dogs or check out my resources page for more helpful information about cancer in dogs.
