A coworker of mine has a cocker spaniel that he no longer can keep. They moved into a new home and Cody can not come inside because he will make the house dirty! Go Figure! He has been tied to a runner for quite a while and doesn't get much exercise. He has a shelter for when it rains and is given food and water.
This coworker also has a maltese that lives indoors. But they want to keep him. I want to try and find Cody a home. He deserves better.
He is a brown and white cocker spaniel. AKC registered. 5 years old. He is free to a good home. Is up to date with his shots and housebroken.

Ohhhh after meeting Tucker I would LOVE a cocker, but I just don't have the room for one yet :(
What a shame that any dog has to have such a terrible life. I bet he's just beyond himself with boredom and lonliness. I am glad you are trying to find him a home and I hope he gets a better life then what he's been given currently. Poor guy :( bad owners
Good luck, Souraya. And good luck Cody.

Leslie, Cody doesn't get walked, bathed, paid any attention, etc... He gets food and water. That's all. They have Solomon, the maltese that they fuss over, walk, cuddle with, etc... It pisses me of so terribly much!

Is your co-worker rehomeing his children too? They
have been known to make a house very dirty.

I wish you the best of luck to get this little dog a "real"

Sorry, Molly, I have been away for the weekend.
I went on petfinder.com and looked at the Pets Wanted section and contacted a few people. One replied and said she was interested. I told her that I would like to visit her house and have her fill out an application. I am in the process of putting one together. I want to make sure Cody goes to a good home. If things don't work out with her, I will definetly contact you. Cody is a sweetheart.
As for the comment about rehoming the skin kids, I could agree more! The thing that kills me is that they got another dog after they moved into the new home and he stays in doors and gets pampered. Argggg:mad:

I'm going to use the same phrase that DoggiesAreTheBest used.
It pisses me off also that someone could do this to an animal. Can't come inside cause he will dirty the house. I have never heard of anything so ridiculous in my life. It just breaks my heart thinking about this poor dog out there, looking at the house and wondering what the hell he did to deserve this inhumane treatment, while the other spoiled brat has the lap of luxury.
I hope you find a good home for him where he will receive lots of love and attention, and i'm sure you will make sure of it also.

My pups are well worth the mess! My clothes, sofa, floors, and basically every surface imaginable get covered in fur at an exponentially higher rate than I can clean it up. My carpet has stains from where dirty paws, wagging tails knocking over drinks, and upset tummies (yuck) made their mark. Not once have I ever looked at my dogs and wished they weren't there so I sould have a clean house. My dogs are a blessing to me and I am lucky that they have chosen me to be their mommy. A person that sees an animal as a mere object and not a blessed soul is not a person that should ever have a pet. When an animal is tossed away, abused, and neglected, it is a true tragedy on the part of the human race. If you can look at an innocent animal, a creature that gives unconditional love and wants nothing more than to please you and be taken care of, and not feel love and pity for it, you are not a person I want to know.

No kidding! To us all on PetTalk, our pets mean the world to us! I'd do anything for Anna and Rosie, after all, we have Anna back to normal after she got hit by a car, we spent about $500 on her leg, etc. I don't know what I'd do without my babies. - Rachel

Until a couple weeks ago I too would say what are clean floors, but I got a new hardwood floor the only way to go with the fuzzy kids. The couch now is another stroy, Merlin claims it and frankly he can have it , He's in for a shock if I ever do get another.
I have to stop reading your rescue stuff I fell in love. It's a good thing I live too far away. My family would kill me, Merlin too hes still no happy about Lady. I 'm praying for a home for the little guy.

I am dying here. He looks so much like my Tucker. Souraya have you tried checking with any Cocker Spaniel Rescue groups? A long time ago I knew of one in Wisconsin but I don't know that I have that address anymore. I am going to see if I can search for it. This little boy deserves a chance.
I want to take him so badly, but I know there is no way that my husband would agree, and in reality I know he is right in that we should limit ourselves to two dogs, but this is going to kill me, I just know it. :(

Ok, I am beyond furious.
On Friday, I asked my coworker if Cody was good in a crate, per the request of his new mom. The reason she wanted to know was because she would have to crate him for 2-3 hours a day while she ran errands. Untill she was sure of his behavior patterns and certain he was potty trained. Well, my coworker said he was OK in a crate.
This morning he said that him and his wife decided that they didn't want to give Cody up. He is better off tied to the tree than being in a cage. I tried to explain the reason behind the crate and assured him it was temporary, but he said that they made up their mind.
How could Cody be better off tied to a tree than being crayed for a few hours untill his new mom could be more certain of his behavior? This is driving me crazy.
How am I supposed to react? I now feel like he has wasted my time by misleading me. I want to throw up!
Poor Cody!

Those people are definately crazy! A dog deserves a home where people love and nurture it. In my opinion, being tied to a tree in the back yard all the time, is far worse than being in a appropriately-sized crate for a few hours at a time. Being tied up is the equilivalant of being confined in a cage. Only without the shade and air-conditioning, and the being let out to be free to play. My dogs are in crates when I'm gone. They also happen to be the happiest most well cared for dogs within a 20 mile radius ;) . Jake and Addie don't mind their crates. They get tons of treats and toys, and don't have the added stress of wondering if they will be in trouble when I get home. I do hope this will not be a permanent thing, but until they outgrow the puppy chewing stuff, it is the happiest solution.
I know you've tried hard to find the pup a new, more nurturing home (I'm not sure about the dogs exact living conditions, so disregard these next few statements, if they are not fitting). Even though, I believe the dog would have been better off with the new family you found, if the old family feeds the dog and does not abuse it, it is still better off than many of our poor furry friends. Maybe your friend, who was going to take Cody, could give a home to another, even needier pooch, maybe even save one from death's door.

06-24-2002, 08:51 AM
Oh Souraya, I can see why you are so upset, poor Cody I can't believe these people, I will never understand why a person wants a dog to tie to a tree like it didin't exist, it's certainly not for companionship, not for love, why?
I learned one thing if the dog is on a very short rope, or no water, or no shelter you can call animal control. The stupidity of some people, let's see is a dog better in a crate for a couple of hours or tied to a tree the rest of it's life. That's awful and cruel.
I know how disappointed you are and there is always the chance they will change their mind again.

I hate lies, but for Cody's sake, I made an exception.
The new mom assured me that he would only be crated for 2-3 hours until she is certain that he is potty trained and isn't destructive. I asked my coworker if he would give him up if I found another home for Cody where he wouldn't be crated. And he said yes.
In a few days, I will tell him I found another lady who will take Cody. How does that sound? I need to get Cody out of there!

Souraya,
I also hate lies but I also believe when someone or something is going to be hurt and it can be prevented, we need to do what needs to be done. You are not lying to get out of a consequence of one of your actions, you are doing it to help a poor innocent dog from being abused further. In my opinion, I think there is a big difference! What an ordeal this has all been! How great it is that you are doing everything you can to find poor Cody a good home. I know some people are against crates, but for short times it is the best solution for a dog...and much safer then being tied to a tree!! we started Sadei in a crate until she was trust worthy (potty tained etc.) and Cincy is still crated during the day, becuase of health problems she has had. We are slowly trying to moe her out of it. I don't think this makes us bad dog owners...in fact I think our girls are rather spoiled and very happy.
I don't don't like lies either, but in this case it is for the good of the dog. do what you have to do, for Cody's sake.

Being as Cody is over the puppy and young adult stage, he probably will do very well left alone for a few hours. I'll bet that after a little experimentation Cody won't even need to be crated and more importantly ever again tied to a tree. So in the final anaylsis this is no lie at all. I am just going on my experience with Tucker.

I know of another cocker spaniel that is tied up all day. His name is Rocky. My friend, Melissa's, brother and sister-in-law own him. I thought Amy, the sister-in-law, was really an animal lover. He was inside all the time when he was a little puppy, and received a lot of attention. Now he lives entirely outside, tied up at all times. He apparently *does* get fed because he is extremely fat. Well, at least that's what Melissa said...they finally had him groomed after he had been a sheepdog for over a year I'm sure.
Then there's Bear and Trusty. Her dad's "hunting" dogs. They live at the house with Rocky too. They live in a wood shack that's older then the hills, with a tiny little chain link run on the back. They get food and water, but that's it. We've tried to give them attention, but we can't handle them, especially Bear. He's gigantic and WILD, because he has received absolutely no training just being a dog.
I've been trying to get her to steal the dogs for a long time now...seriously lol....I just want to nab them sometime and take them to Best Friends or something. It's better then where they are at. Anyone want a 2-3 year old fat cocker spaniel, a 7-9 year old gigantic wild black lab, or a 11-13 year old skinny german shorthair?
I don't think crates are evil. My dogs have to stay in them when we are gone. There isn't really a choice...we have no doggy door, and Smokey will dig under the fence. It's definitely better then being tied to a tree!
I hope you will be able to talk Cody's owners into giving him a better home.

Well, this is not quiet a rescue story, but goes to show some people just don't deserve the companionship or love of pets. I was at the vet's this week, waiting outside the Xray door (for Cody) which was located right outside the vet's offices.I couldn't help but overhear one of the vet's in a controlled (trying) heated discussion with someone about showing up for an appointnment the following day for her dog's ear surgery. Apparently, (and I moved closer and my ears got bigger..nosey) rather than have this much needed surgery, the client opted for MORE anti-biotics, which the vet said wouldn't work anymore. He even offered a payment plan for the surgery. His voice got a bit louder and more insistent and said "You would rather have your dog in constant agony rather than operate to relieve the problem"? After he hung up the phone (turned out the person was a nurse) his assistant told him to take a deep breath and count to 10. He was SO angry. He was muttering and slamming his fists saying that some people just shouldn't have pets!. He was sooo upset. He looked up and saw me and just shook his head. I swear he was going to cry. I happily paid my $200 bill after that!! I feel awful seeing Cody so upset and confused at the vet but would mortgage my house to save him. It was all I could do to keep my mouth shut and yell at the phone. I feel so sad :( for that poor, helpless, pained dog.

My neighbors have a Beagle. The beagle is cooped up in a cage 24/7 no matter what the heat or how cold it is (usually about 90 right now) He is either in the cage or on the Lead. They have a garbage can IN his cage to throw his poo away so that they don't have to walk far to throw it away, his cage stinks so bad. i feel bad for the little guy. Well I actually felt so bad that (I have a dog walking business) I lowered my price from 5 dollars a walk to free! So I was like hi I saw you had a beautiful beagle in a cage behind your house. I also noticed he was cooped up most of the day. I was wondering if you minded if I walked him twice a day, now I usually charge 5 dollars, but I am a sucker for beagles and will walk him for free. She was like NO don’t' you know anything Beagles area lazy breed they don't need exercise. . I just wanted to yell at her HELLO LADY IT’S A BEAGLE THEY HUNT THEY NEED EXERSISE. . Some people. My other neighbors let there "pitbull run around the neighborhood and it attacked a beagle named Whinny (another dog I walk). His injures weren't that bad luckily. We can't walk him for awile though . We still go over to give him treats and stuff.

Great news! Cody has a new home!!
I wasn't able to do my home visit earlier last eek, but managed to go on Saturday evening. His new family is GREAT! They are the sweetest people and just love Cody.
They have a huge back yard that is fenced in, a pool, and lots of big shady trees. Although Cody will be an indoor dog, he will have lots of room to play outside. The family has adult children who are already out on their own. Mrs. Perry stays home all the time.
Cody spent his his first night there last night. I haven't heard yet from his family, so I am guessing things went well.
