There's a precious 5 yr old Golden named "Ben" coming to live with us for a while, starting Monday. He is so new that he isn't even on the Foothills Golden Retriever Rescue website yet. As soon as we get back from our Thanksgiving holiday, and through the work day on Monday, I'll pick him up from the vet. He is neutered, healthy and "clingy". Sounds like my Zipper. I can't wait to meet him. Hope Mack will be ok with him. I never worry about Honey and Lilly.
Pictures will come next week!

My daughter, Helen (15), asked me when I was going to stop this stuff? LOL!!! She said, "Mom, you know you're going to keep him". Well, I didn't keep Gracie, and I hold out faith that I won't try to keep Ben, either. My husband is not going to be in favor of keeping anyone, I promise! She knows me well, though. I miss my Zipper. :( Mack is wonderful, but he isn't Zipper. I think Helen is thinking that if Ben fits the bill, then I'll be saying I want him to stay. I loved Gracie, but I didn't need her to stay. Let's hope I keep the same attitude about Ben! If I keep everyone I foster, I can't foster any more!

If my husband has anything to say about it, Ben will be on a temporary stop at our home. I didn't even ask him before I agreed to take Ben in. :o He's going to be out of town all next week, anyway! LOL!!! They have tons of applications, just need to get through them all.
Don't wish this on me, you guys. Pray for me to be strong so I can foster some more. Can't foster more if I have 4 of my own!

Something *happened* tween Fluff-Butt hoppin IN and then OUT at the Ranch ...
STILL tryin to figger out just WHAT *happened* ... http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/confused.gif
but the chances of him *leavin* seemed to lessen as each day passed.
I'm pretty sure he has his own Door Key, now.

He's here and he has a propeller tail! LOL!! Poor baby is so nervous, right now, but the others have gotten "over" him now, so I'm sure he will settle down. I'll try to get some pictures tonight, but I don't want to scare him right now.
This boy definitely needs some training and I fear that I am NOT the one to do that, but I'll do my best. Surely after a few days, he will settle down so that I can work with him, one on one. Now, if only I can keep Mack out of his face! LOL!!! :p
The vet tech told me that this one was a strange situation. She said a lady came in and said she found him as a stray, took him to her vet, got his shots, etc, and kept him a few days. I'm assuming she called rescue and they directed her to turn him in at the vet's office, but I'm not even sure about that. She said that the lady brought a bed and toys for him and cried and cried when she left him, as if she might have been his true owner, just didn't want to admit it. Guess we'll never know the real story. He is a sweetheart, though, and is finally lying down for the first time since I brought him in arond 4 pm. I'm afraid to move! LOL!!

I finally got over here to meet Ben. Oh my. Dare I say he is even more beautiful that Gracie. There is something about a golden that makes me want to get a comb and start running it through that beautious fur. I'm know I can't handle a big dog, but Ben sure makes me want to try. Thank goodness you live so far away.

Ben is fine! :) He has some issues that we are working on, but overall, he is a good boy. He is a counter surfer, though, and wants to be close (underfoot) all the time. 86 pounds of "underfoot" gets old! Ha Ha!!!!
I'll try and get some pictures, but there hasn't been much time to do that.
Thanks for asking, though. He'll find a home, I'm sure, but I need to get him ready, before they can do that.

Ben's prospective new family is coming to see him on Friday afternoon! This is much faster than I thought it would be. They are a young couple with 2 cats, no dogs and no children, so they will have the time for him that he desperately needs. He is such a sweetheart with the best disposition. If our circumstances were different, I'd really, really like to keep him. I want me another big Golden boy, one day. I just don't think the timing is right for us now. If they love him, and I think they will, he will leave with them tomorrow. :( :) It's that mixed emotion, again, for me. I will miss him, but I will be so happy for him, too!!!!

Unfortunately, Honey seems to have spread her birthday "cheer" (NOT) and
more than one has the same problem now. Problem is figuring out who has the issues.
Probably time to do a fecal exam on at least one of them to try and figure out
if they have picked up a parasite or if it is just a virus they are sharing.
It could have easily been brought into the house by our foster boy, Ben,
who spent a week at the vet before he came a week and a half ago.
Ben's prospective new family is coming to see him on Friday afternoon!
If they love him, and I think they will, he will leave with them tomorrow. :( :)
Double -
Do you think New Family can handle a possible SICK-new-doggy ??
With the wrong introduction - being sick may be a deal-breaker. :(
On the other hand ... needing a little extra care may be a relationship building advantage.
GOOD LUCK making a good First Impression, Ben!!
;)

12-07-2006, 04:12 PM
Oh Phred, I should have explained this when I made this post. :o I was running short on time and figured I'd come back later and explain. There is NO way that I'll let him go tomorrow with them if he is determined to be sick. In fact, I plan to take him in tomorrow morning, along with one or more others, to have them checked. We don't need for these nice people to start out life with a sick Ben, for sure! And obviously, something is going on in my house right now. The good news is that this probably is a parasite or virus, not something specific to Honey like cancer or a blockage. Whew! I sure had to find out the hard way that she is likely to be suffering from some community type illness, not a horrible, life threatening disease, though. *sigh*

Any news from the vet??
Logan
12-08-2006, 01:25 PM
We had a perfect night, in our home. Mack was in our hall bathroom, "his room", and had no problem. Ben was gated in the kitchen/den and he didn't have any problems either. :)
Honey and Lilly slept in the bedroom with me and neither of them had a problem, either.
Everyone is eating now and taking their Metronidazole. Dr. Robinson and I talked this morning and he prescribed enough Metronidazole for a week, for all of them.
If these folks fall for Ben, as I think they will, I will send medication home with them, to just be on the safe side.

Ben is going to his "forever" home. :) :( They have left him with me for a couple of hours so that they can "shop" to get ready. We'll send him on with food that he has been eating and a nice bed from his original Mom.
What a sweetheart he is and I will miss him so much!!!!!

Have you received any Ben-Tails from his Mom & Dad?

I am so slow in responding! :o Sorry about that!!!!!
Ben did go to his new home on Friday evening and I was able to visit with him a bit on Sunday when I delivered his bed, which I had washed over the weekend. He's a bit shy, still, not eating a whole lot, but I know he is in the best hands. They adore him!!!! :)
I'm going to call and check up on him tonight, just to make sure he is doing ok. I urged them to take him to the vet, just to ease their minds that all is ok. These folks have never had a dog and their one request to the rescue was that they please get a "lap" dog. Well, they got one!!! Ha Ha!!!!!
I'll keep you posted as I learn more about how he is doing and adjusting.

Anyone want to put a Wager on Ben's outcome? :p
;)
8 months later, guess who is coming to live with us, permanently? BEN!!!!!! He is coming tomorrow and if Mack handles it well, which I think he will, I am going to have that precious boy back here with us. His owners love him so much, but their life is getting ready to change and they want what is best for him. Todd is going back to school and will be moving from place to place for training and they were worried about how it will affect Ben.
Helen and I spent a long time with them last night and I might just have "buddy" again, that can do therapy work with me, go to work with me, etc etc etc. Honey and Mack are awfully special, but they are not equipped mentally and physically to do the things I enjoyed with Lilly. Ben will never replace Lilly, but we all recognized that I needed her more than we ever knew and I have missed her so much and the things we did together. Scott is agreeable to this, although he has never met Ben, since he was out of town when Ben was here before. And he is out of town now, too. But, he ok, and Helen is ok, and they both support me on this. :)
I am so happy that I could dance!!!! :D I'll keep you posted!!!

Welcome "Back Home", Ben!
Has he passed the Mack Test yet?
:)
Ha Ha! I think it is Mack that has to pass the test! I'm not worried about Ben. I haven't gotten him yet. I'm back from Atlanta, but need to finish my work before I go get him. And I won't go get him before I have time to take Mack on a long walk to work off some of that energy. Long walk has a very different meaning for an English Bulldog in the SC summers. We will walk around the block! LOL!!! :p
If everything goes well the next couple of days and Ben adjusts to being one of three, rather than an only dog, and Mack behaves himself, we will go through the formal adoption process with Foothills Golden Retriever Rescue. Ben's current family will officially "return" him (on paper), and Scott, Helen and I will officially "adopt" him. Oh dear mercy, I hope it is going to be ok. I am so excited I can hardly stand it, although I do hurt for his mom and dad, who are going to miss him so much. I just appreciate the fact that they trusted me enough to ask me to do this.
