View Full Version : Pearl Is Sick:Monday's Visit Updated 11-13-06

My little girl Pearl is sick and I have a vet appointment at 9:20am this morning.:( Both she and Ziggy went to the vet last Sat. because Pearl had an inflamed upper lip that looked white and pussy and baby Ziggy had stopped eating again.
Pearl received a coritcosteriod shot that will last for a month because the docotor said it was some kind of a skin disorder and she may break out like this throughout her life. I forgot what he called it though. She started sneezing a little bit on Wed. but was still acting normally. She ate well last night but later wanted to just be by herself back in my room on my bed which isn't like her. This morning she won't eat and she's very lethargic and only wants to sleep. She's also still having some sneezing attacks.:(
Do you think that she picked up something while being at the vet? She's up to date on all of her shots. Do you think it's a reaction to the steriod shot? I guess I'll find out soon. I just hope that whatever she has isn't contagious to my other cats. Baby Ziggy was on appetite stimulant pills and is still on some liquid antibiotics through today but is doing very well now.
Please keep Pearl in your thoughts. Thanks.:)

Sounds like an allergic reaction to me (of course, the vet will tell you for sure). That's just how my Kacey reacted to some antibiotics--sneezy and lethargic.
I hope Pearl feels better very soon.

Hi, I'm back from the vet but I have to go back to work so here's the update. Pearl's temperature is 106 which is very high so she has to spend the day at the vets.:( They're going to be taking some blood from her and giving her sub-q fluids and antibiotics. Hopefully they can bring her temperature down. If all goes well I can pick her up tonight. If not she may need to stay with them over night.:( The vet isn't sure what's causing this yet. I just hope that none of my other cats will become sick. Ziggy is still eating well and has been off of the appetite stimulant pills since Wed. so hopefully she'll continue to eat well. Pearl needs lots of PT prayers right now. Thanks.

Hi everyone. Thanks so much for all of the PT prayers. Once again they've worked wonders.:) Pearl's now home and is feeling much better. When they brought her out to me she was meowing very loudly as if to tell me all about her day. She also talked to me a little in the car. She was very hungry and ate all of her food and also drank some water.:)
As of 4:30pm her temp was back down to 102.8 which is almost normal so hopefully it's normal now. The doctor thinks that she has some kind of a bacterial infection so it shouldn't be contagious to my other cats. She had 2 antibiotic injections, some IV fluids, and it says vettestCBC/Chem12/Electrolyts whatever that is. I''m not sure if they did some bloodwork or not. She's also on cefa drops 2 times a day until they're gone. She has another appointment on Mon. morning at 9am for a recheck. Hopefully I'll know more then.
Storm hissed at her,I knew he would, Starr was very happy to see her and just sniffed her and licked her, Ziggy was also happy to see her and Sunny and Sky didn't seem to have any kind of reaction towards her. She has both of her front paws partially shaved and has been licking them. I think it's now safe to say that she's out of the woods. Thanks again for all of your concerns.:)

Does Eosinophilic ulcer sound familiar? Kylie has that. My vet told me it is an allergic reaction from flea bites.

All of us from Wisconsin are happy to hear your little girl is doing better. I woke up and the first thing I was going to do was check on your little girls updates. I understand your concern the meezers just manage to get themselves so entangled in your heart you are lost without them. Anyway I am so glad to hear she is doing better. Let us all know if something changes. Give Pearl a big hug from all of us. :D

Yes, I think that this is what they called it because it was some kind of an ulcer. I just looked it up and here's a link about it:Eosinophilic Ulcer (http://www.thepetcenter.com/gen/eulcer.html).
Pearl's upper lip wasn't as bad as the cat pictured and she had a coritcosteriod injection which has helped it heal. It looks pretty good now. I've never heard that it's caused by flea bites. As far as I know, she's never even had fleas and I give my cats advantage every month so this won't happen.
Pearl continues to do well and is a little more active today. She's eating very well but is still sneezing from time to time. She was also very easy to medicate and I hope that this will continue. I think she knows that I'm trying to help her.:) Storm is still hissing at her and Pearl wants some comforting from him but he's so aggressive towards her. It's so sad to watch.:( I hope that by tomorrow Storm will love his little sister again.
Thanks again for all of your concerns. I'll continue to keep you updated about her. Hopefully I'll know more after her recheck visit on Mon. morning.:)

well my vet said it was an allergic rxn caused by the bites. Kylie has had it all her life - and she was a barn cat and I noticed when she did have fleas it flares up - but of course she also has an allergic skin condition to flea bites too.

Hi, I didn't have time to update you as promised about this mornings recheck. Pearl's temp. is normal and she doing very well. Her previous bloodwork was normal except that her white blood cell count was sky high due to her bacterial infection. She had another CBC done this morning and she's now in the normal range.:)
I asked the vet more about what he thought had caused her bacterial infection. He thinks that it had to do with a reaction to her steriod shot. She received a steriod shot on Sat. Nov.4th for the ulcer on her lip. It has helped to heal her ulcer but she may have had some bad bacteria in her body and it caused her body not to react to it to try to fight it off. If she needs another steriod shot in the future, which he thinks she will, then she'll also be given some antibiotics so that this won't happen again. He said that the ulcer is caused by an immune system deficiency. I think it's like an auto-immune disease.
Hopefully her ulcer breakouts won't happen very often. I'm just so thankful that she's doing well now and is almost back to her old self. Thanks again for all of your concerns.:)

Happy to hear that Pearl is on the mend!! Oh,how was Sky's reaction?
Sky was fairly nice to her and started washing her on Sunday. I thought that this would make her smell better to Storm but it didn't. He was still his hissy self towards her. I think he's getting cranky in his old age. Everything is back to normal now and they all get along again.:)
Thanks again everyone for all of your concerns.:)
