Seems that life/work, etc stresses have been at a peak for me lately. It is at such times I will sit down at the piano to play away some of the frustration.
Ritz has shared a certain love for music since the day I brought her home - she was so upset during the ride. I started singing "Eidelweiss" to her and she promptly calmed down and took a nap. When I would stop, she would mew again, I would sing again, calm she would be.
Last week, I was sitting at the piano. Ritz came into the room and sat on the rug facing me, getting sleepy eyed, and finally dozing off after a little "Fur Elise" (ironic title, don't you think? - )....
I stopped to leaf through the music book for another choice. Ritz awakened and meowed as if she was confused or mildly alarmed. She then got up quickly, rushed over to me, jumped up beside me on the piano bench, put one paw in on my arm and looked up at me with another quizzical ?"Meeow?"...
I don't know, I may be slipping into wishful anthropomorphism here, but I could swear she was asking for more. I played another as she curled up next to me and fell asleep.
Music does indeed have charms, and so do our sweet furkids.

;) :) don't be too envious - it's hardly concert quality stuff, but good enough for 'round the house'. I taught myself how to play from one of those "self learn" books, so I'm hardly a great pianist - I just love music and like the way the piano sounds and makes me feel.
:) never mind how your music sounds technically ..... your cat loves it , and that is more than good enough !!!
Keep on entertaining her (or he) !!

So sweet of Ritz to ask for an 'Encore'. My cats don't mind music one way or the other unless I play my harmonica. I can really clear the room with it.;)

LOL....as much as she likes piano music, she really hates the "recorder" (a flute of sorts)....I think it might hurt her ears - as you said, it clears the room - I try to only play that outdoors

Athough I do not play any musical instruments, I will put on classical music, whenever it is being presented on the FM radio -which is getting more seldom. (We used to have a full day-time classical station on AM, but they sold it to Mickey Mouse, which, in my opinion states the truth of the programming.) My cats love the music and it will lull them to sleep, at least they will quit playing and running around.:D

What a great story tuxluvr. Ritzy sure seems like a very smart cat. I think that certain kinds of music do have a soothing and calming affect on animals. I guess that's where they got the saying of "music soothes the savage beast.http://www.stopstart.fsnet.co.uk/Gif/WBtazani.gif

I've been told that the real quote is "hath charms to soothe the savage breast"......but given society's discomfort with any literary reference to body parts, I'm guessing the R was dropped. Any graduates of English want to provide the correct quote?
I like both versions.
Is Ritzy smart? Well of course I'm prejudicially obliged :D, because I think she's the greatest cat I've ever had, but truthfully, like all kitties, she has her own unique qualities. Cats have such expressive faces - I think it's just that I've grown smarter ABOUT cats and have learned to recognize how/when they are communicating with me. I just love these mysterious creatures :D

Great story!
Rudie doesn't like music. I usually listen to Celtic rock, and he just can't stand it. He won't come inside, so I always have to turn everything down before opening the door for him.
Eddy doesn't mind anything at all, as long as it's not too loud.
My cats don't like the recorder either, unless it's the tenor recorder.

tuxluver, " I love these mysterious creatures". You certainly and accurately told the truth with that little statement. Perhaps this is the reason why so many of us are fascinated with their company! Also, this fact may account for the many posts concerning an explanation for their behavior.:)
