Two days ago I was missing a little solid black 5-week old kitty. After looking for him (Nightshade) I thought he was hiding somewhere in the house. But the next day, still no Nightshade! His littermate Shadow are nearly impossible to tell apart, so, I thought, that I was actually looking at both of them at two different times. However, the next morning my neighbor came over calling to me through the front window. She had Nightshade in her hands! She said that he was on her doorstep (nearly 700 ft away) and was waiting for her to rescue him. Needless to say I was a bit dumbfounded, because I cannot, for the life of me, remember seeing him go out the door, and what is more, that if one furkid gets out, there have been others also. (But this time, not so!) However I was very thankful to her for bringing him back to me, and considering the time he was outside (appx 24- 36 hours) and all the dangers out there at night, that he was also safe. Because, if he had been taken in a nighttime maurauder's raid, I would not have known what could have happened to him. :( So far, he hasn't made any other advances to get outside :)

WOW! Sounds like he was one lucky kitty to get returned home safe and sound. They can be so incredibly sneaky about getting outside. Glad he is home safe.:)

SCARY!
Cats are so good at sneaking out the door when they want out bad enough.
One of my kittys will stand off to the side where you can't see him when you come in the door, and try and dart out. One time he did this successfully when we had a guest come over, and we did not know it until a couple hours later :( Luckely he did not go too far, and we got him home by shaking the food bag :)

Whew! What a relief you got him home safe and sound. They do seem to go invisible at will sometimes, don't they?

I'm so glad that Nightshade was found by your neighbor and returned back to you. I guess you really need to keep a close eye on the kittens each time you open up the door. Hopefully he learned his lesson and won't try this again.

The only other explanation for him getting out and me not noticing it, could have occured if someone opened the door looking for me, (this happens often around this place) and he got out that way. But the problem I have with this theory, is that when anyone comes in the house looking for me (usually by opening the front door and peeking inside), while calling my name, that because the person is not known, all of my furkids will run and hide in the house, until the intruder goes away.
(later) I was noticing today (6/13) that there is a space perhaps wide enough, between the screen door and the concrete step, for a little kitten like Nightshade to squeeze through. Of course now he is too big to fit into such an opening. but he well could have done so peraps 10 days ago. (Whew! They sure grow fast!).

So glad you got Nightshade back home Wayne!!
What a lucky little furbaby - 5 weeks old and trying to go exploring!!
Someone was watching over him - Jumper? I hope so.
Daft as this sounds - I think black kitties are sometimes more difficult to see!! The times I've searched for either Bagel or Ketchum and not seen them is too numerous!! Not just me - hubby Don has the same problem! Then when we stop searching they come wandering into the room totally unconcerned!!!:D Perhaps they didn't want to be found!!:)
Anyhow I'm so pleased your kind neighbour returned the Wanderlust Boy!!! Please give him head bumpies and nose kisses from me xxxx.

I'm glad that your neighbor found little Nightshade and brought him back - a bit early to explore the world unattended I'd say! :D
Have you checked some digital cameras yet? Would love to see your furfamily! :)

Lynne. Thanks for your thoughts. I'm stll trying to figure out how he got out. However, I will keep in mind your observations on black cats. Now that both of them are getting a little older, there is beginning to appear a difference between Nightshade and Shadow. Shadow has a white tuft of hair in his left ear. Other than this, I can see no difference.
My neighbor (who also "owns" a pride of neutered males) first though when she saw Nightshade, that he was a member of a stray's litter. She went out looking for the "stray mom". And since she did not find any such cat, the she got the idea that perhaps he was one of mine, although this was a "long shot" of a possibility because of the age of the kitten. But when she came to the front of this little house, holding him, I said to her, I have been looking all over for him!
Randi, yes I did purchase a digital camera last Saturday. Now I am going to give it to a neighbor to show me how to work it and set it up. He has plenty of digital camera experience, and the only difference between mine and his is where the controls are. Now perhaps I can begin to place pictures for all to see, especially my indoor 13.

Cats can be just like greased lightening. Although, she wasn't a kitten, Patches was a master at escaping. Then she would strut around to let you know she had gotten outdoors.
Such a wee one, I am so glad that your neighbor found your kitty.

Hmmm, nobody has mentioned the alien abduction possibilities - after all, if creatures came looking for the best of Earth's assets, wouldn't a tiny kitty be near the top of the list? ;)
If Nightshade starts building a strange mountain of kibble in your living room, or you start to hear strange music tones, the mystery disappearance will be explained! :D :D :D After all, close encounters of the kitty kind are just the best!
P.S. I'm glad he's home safe and sound!

Wayne, I'm looking forward to seeing pictures of all of your furkids. I just hope that they are'nt afraid of the camera and that they slow down long enough for you to take their pictures.:)

KAK, I suppose that it will be necessary to carry the camera around the house, or leave it somewhere so that I can get easy access to it. There have been so many poses from my furkids and incidents for good photography, which last only for a few seconds of time, that I wish I could photo-record. However, cheer up all, my neighbor has got the camera to take pictures and place them on the digital screen. Now, he has to learn how to erease them so I can place other photos on the 'net.:)
(update) Nightshade and Shadow are two playful kittens, running around the house chasing each other, or playing with the blue menagerie. ( I still have a difficult time in determining which one is which. But as long as I see two black identical kittens playing, then I know they are both healthy and safe.)
