On Halloween I read that,
People will kill and destroy black cats so evil wont come, this person posted about it so people won't give away their black kittens on that day. :(
That's so stupid, I hope it's not true, it's ONLY a damn colour of fur.

It is absolutely true. Black cats are at great risk during this time of year. Lots of shelters won't adopt black cats out during October.

I've always heard that shelters won't let people adopt black cats around this time of year as well.

Sadly, a lot of people are superstitious about black cats.
Back in the days of the Salem witch trials, black cats were thought to be "familiars" (or pets) of witches.
Some people still believe black cats bring bad luck and try to destroy them.
Even in our town, we are advised to keep all black cats inside around Halloween time.
Ignorance is hard to kill!!!!
My Chester is a black cat and he has brought nothing but love and good luck to me!!! He stays safely in the house with me at all times. All my cats do.

:( Now that's just stupid.
P.S. As If It matters, my friend adopted a black cat, and I adopted a black dog both within 4 days of each other  We hadn't even planned it that way. We both fell in love... In OCTOBER. The smart people don't care.

In our area (Chicago, Illinois), the adoption centers and rescue groups hide their black cats at the beginning of October until November. For their safety.
I sometimes dispair for our civilization. :(

That is just so crazy just because of the superstition. I believed that you never cross near a black cat in October. Well i was little but now that is just over board. to not adopt them what so ever on October.

at the shelter where i volunteer, we won't adopt out black cats, period until November. plus, we urge people to keep their cats inside at this time of year.

Unfortunately, it is certainly so in particular satanic groups.
Sorry to whomever might be a satanist in the group. I am just pointing out things I have seen through documentary and such.

I have a friend in cat rescue and no black cats are adopted from October until well into November.
Yes, people just suck...I would love to hit every single one of them over the head with a 2x4 to knock some sense into their sick little minds.
I know Satanists and I know nothing of the "real" Satanists sacrificing black cats, but, I will certainly check with them.

My rescue has only black cats at the Petsmart adoption center right now. I asked the one board member if she realized it and she said that she had a fight with the president last year over it.... she figures that we screen so rigidly already that there's no way a crackjob would get their hands on our black cats. She has a point. :p We really do have a strict screeing process.

Unfortunately it's true with Indiana shelters as well. No adoptions of
black cats for a time before & after halloween. It really doesn't help that
black cats are always depicted in media as scary, evil things, associated with
witches & Halloween.

I would think it would be superstitious people who think they are "eliminating" evil who might kill black cats - not the devils-witches-black magic groups, who revere black cats, no?
I had a black cat that I found in a cemetery, naturally, I named him Spook. I kept him in on Halloween because I worried someone might try to run him down or something stupid like that. I think black animals in general get a bad rap.

All I know is that there are a lot of sickos out there. :( Anyone who can find it enjoyable to kill something is really a threat to our society.

Its not just October that's a problem. Black cats have a harder time getting adopted year-round. Whatever colour, my cats are NEVER let outside on their own. I'm surprised to see how many people here say they keep their cats inside around halloween, as if they are safe from the perils of the outdoors the rest of the year?

We live in a weird weird world. Some people hurt innocent animals for no reason. When I was younger, two of our cats were poisoned for no reason we ever knew about. They were poisoned at the same time and we always had a feeling we knew who did it but couldn't prove it. They were not black cats nor were they mean. I decided then when I grew up all my animals would stay in the house.
I think sometimes people invent excuses to be mean (like the cats were chasing birds or some nonsense). That makes them believe they have a right to hurt the innocent. It's sort of like people who abuse children trying to use the excuse they were abused as a child. That is such a cop out!!! Millions of people are abused every day but don't go out and abuse any one else.
There are two things that make me really mad and they are animal and child abuse!!! These is no excuse for either in my opinion. :(

It is true, but so sad. :( Around here the superstition is to "stay away from them" and not to go near them, so in other words, leave them alone. I've never heard of them desroying them. :( So so sad.

Being meowmie to two blackies, I know first hand the prejudice they are subjected to. I work at a shelter and year around I show people a blackie and they say "oh not a black one". Not to be offensive here but many are Asian families so perhaps the stigma is more prevalent in those cultures.
I did have a family looking for a cat as companion for their elderly mother and said no blacks because they are hard to see and she might hurt it by accident..perfectly understandable. We don't adopt out blackies in Oct.
Anyway, I think the real danger to all cats but particularly black ones near Halloween are sick people/kids that think it would be fun to torture one as part of a Halloween "prank" or "trick". Sadly in many cases it has less to do with religion or superstition than down right cruelty  In regards to adopting blackies, some people just adopt one as a Halloween "decoration" and abandon/ignore it after.

Our shelter never adopted black cats during the month of October. We had a couple of close calls, with people wanting black cats for creepy Halloween-type things. (I'm not going to go into detail, it's disturbing.)
Black dogs also have a much harder time finding a home at shelters. In a litter of puppies, the black ones were always the last to go. And the black adult dogs were SO hard to find homes for.

I've never heard of such a thing during Halloween ( times are a changin)

The shelters around here also put a hold on all black cats until November. It's sad and even worse is that it's not only people with specific fears/beliefs against black cats, but also just sick people that think Halloween is a reason to do harm to black cats; as if it were an excuse. Disgusting.

One humane society in my area is having a free cat promotion this month to get cats to homes. Not a good thing for October, but it seems we've had a WI cat population boom this year. They're everywhere.

It's the sad truth. One time Bobo slipped through the door on Halloween night. I was just devastated. Fortunately, he came back home as good as new. There are so many sickos out there and if I happen to see a black cat around our home Halloween night I will definitely try my best to get my parents to let me house it for the night.

Heck, there must be some really gullible people out there if they believe a black cat will bring them bad luck. I wonder if they skip off into the fields in search for a pot of gold every time a rainbow appears

Yep, this is the truth. They also hurt orange cats too I believe. Keep ALL of your cats inside for Halloween, not just black ones. People also hurt cats and other small animals on 4th of July. I heard that some stupid kids shot of a firework with a kitten strapped to it:(:(
