So flipping mad!

I can not seem to get to sleep tonight so I was checking out freecycle.

Here's what one guy wrote:
I am reposting this once last time. I have a new dog and the cats and
him do not get along. My kids have taken a vote and decided to keep
the dog instead. I am trying to give to loving homes before I take
them to the Humane Society. I am also moving VERY soon and wish to
find good homes A.S.A.P. One is male and one is female both are from
the same litter and great with kids. If I do not get any responses I
will have to take to the Humane Society.

The kids have voted?!?!? So, he's teaching his kids that they can just toss out pets like trash? Whats going to happen to this dog when he/she gets boring and is no longer "new"? Then he goes and threatens to take them to the HS if nobody steps forward? Talk about blackmail! I am not looking to get banned from my local freecycle chapter, so I can't respond, but someone here can!

That is so wrong!! Why do people even get pets? I just don't understand people's logic now-a-days. How can you just get a new pet and toss out your current one....and letting your kids vote on which pet to keep...that is just no right...not right at all. :mad:

I really think it's about time local governments thought about introducing some kind of licence system for cats and dogs. In Britain you used to have to have dog licence and it had to be renewed every year, but they scrapped it.
If you had to pay a fixed fee, it doesn't have to be huge but puts some kind of responsibility to owning a pet, then I'm sure more people would think twice and animals woudn't get adopted to idiots.
Is there any kind of licencing in the US, I guess it would vary from state to state?

Boy, if I already couldn't sleep last night, this certainly didn't help. I tossed and turned thinking about it (and have a monster sized migraine to show for it this morning :mad: )

Anyhow, I felt I had to do somethign about this, so I emailed the freecycle head honchos for my area. this is what I sent (too late to tell me I shold have said something better ;) )

I am a member of the Wxyz Freecycle group and often participate. Freecycling is a great thing!

However, I am really upset by the post of someone who is giving away his cats because he got a new dog and his kids voted to get rid of the cats. To me, its not the spirit of freecycling -- its extortion where he's threatening to kill the cats by sending them to the Humane Society unless someone else comes to claim them. Its also teaching his kids that pets are expendable and there's no responsibility involved. Will he be posting this dog in 6 months after the newness wears off and the kids realize there's work involved with their new playmate?

I am not thrilled with the whole concept of allowing pets to be given away anyhow. I am very involved in cat rescue and am a dog trainer. Did you know there is a guy who actually haunts freecycle, craigslist, and newspapers for "free to a good home" ads so that he can feed the free kittens to his pet snake? I almost cringe when I see "free kitten" ads because I know he or his family will get at least one of them (being in the cat rescue, I know this guy and know how good he is at putting on a show making everyone believe he'll be the cat dad of the year while he runs home to feed the kitten to his snake!) I know my little story won't change your policy.... just add me to your list of people who've emailed you in protest of the policy.

Being in charge of a large membership like this must be a thankless and hard job - sorry to send you a complaint!

I hope you emailed him and gave him a what for - the raw feeding group I'm on a couple people posted about getting raw meat if people are cleaning out their freezers and they have been threatened legal action, reported to the humane society and the dept of Agriculture!

Have any of these people heard of training and working with pets so they will get along? I guess the Dad is busy NOT training his children to be good people!
