View Full Version : Problems with Kelsey's Spay Today !!! :o(

I was late getting Kelsey spayed, but she finally went today along with Millie. When I got there to pick them up, Millie was meowing at me in her kennel. I looked in to Kelsey's kennel and she looked dead!!!! She was lifeless and her eyes were awful looking! I told the lady that works there, she looked at her and was concerned as well. It was 5:30 pm. and the vet had already left! They called her on her cell and told her to come right back. It took probably 30 minutes (seemed like forever) for her to get back. In the meantime, the worker rubbed and rubbed on Kelsey and we talked to her and did everything we could to get her to wake up. She looked so awful, I didn't think she was going to make it. We finally got her mad enough that she would wag her tail just a bit.
Finally the vet got there, and she gave her some sort of injection to "kind of reverse the anesthesia" and also another injection to make her heart beat faster and stronger. She said it was "ok" to go ahead and bring her home. Well, it is almost 9pm here and she is still completely zonked!!! I keep checking on her and she is breathing better and a bit responsive to my voice, but still very much sound asleep.
For those who don't know, Kelsey is one of my rescue kitties, and I estimated her to be about 2 or 3 years old. Well, the vet said she is more like 5 or 6 so that is why she must have had a harder time with the anesthesia. :( I feel so bad for her!!!! :( :( Out of all the MANY cats I have had spayed, I have never had one to do this. This really scared me!!!
Please say a few prayers that she will sleep it off and be fine tomorrow!
Here is my Kelsey:

Awwwww I'll be sure to send extra prayers to the man upstairs tonight before I go to sleep so that tomorrow turns out to be a better day for your little fur baby...... I'm sure with her surgery & all she's just worn out and just needs a little rest... I know thats how it was with my dog when she recently had her surgery two different animals I know but I'm sure they experience some of the same stuff ......

Prayers and hugs to dear Kelsey...did the vet say what to watch out for, if anything?
It must be hard to not panic...but try to give soothing vibes when you are with her - your love and gentleness will reassure her.

No, she really didn't say anything! This was the low cost spay/ neuter clinic that I use for my rescues ... not my regular vet! I have been prepared to call my regular vet at the first sign of any further problem. Kelsey is here right by my desk and I am keeping a close eye on her. Actually, just after I posted this thread, she lifted her head for the first time and tried to stand up when I said her name. I took a quick photo of her, so she could tell everyone that she's "in there" just still very groggy! ;)
Here's my sleepy head:

Kim, I'm so sorry that this has happened.:( I'm glad that she's starting to improve and I'm sending lots of prayers and positive thoughts her way. Please continue to keep us updated about her.
Now I'm getting scared about my Ziggy's spay. She gets spayed this Friday and I'm also using a low cost clinic.:( She'll be 13 weeks old.

Poor little girl, that anesthetic must have wiped her out completely!
Just give her plenty of meowmie TLC and she'll be back to her old self soon.

That is very scary (but being 5 to 6 years old shouldn't make anesthesia harder on her. Maybe she just has a more sensitive system.)
Please let us know how she is doing today.

Poor Kelsey! Poor Kim! I would be in a panic if I saw one of my guys like that. I'm so glad to hear she woke up (albeit very groggy and stumbly) Come on Kelsey, wake up completely and get to normal!

Do you know if they used Ketamine for the anesthesia? If you look up my very first (or maybe second) post here at PT you will see that Ketamine was used for Nakita's spay. She reacted horribly to it - she couldn't blink or stand up and it took a good 4 days for her to return back to normal.
After researching it I will never use it for any of my cats in the future and will only use isofluorine.

That sounds SO scary! We often hear that anesthesia can be hazardous, but I had never heard of an actual story before. SO glad she is perking up now. When my Vita was spayed - over 9 years ago now - she slept in the middle of my bed for 4 days. Just got up to nibble a little bit and use her litter box. I called the vet daily. No idea which type of medication was used - I didn't know there is more than one option, never thought about until today. So as long as she progresses, it may take a few days for her to be back to her normal self. And of course then she needs to recoup from the surgery, too.
So glad she is on the mend. Best wishes to both of you.

Its a lucky thing for Kelsey that you got her help right away.
It sonds as though she either had a bad reaction to the anathesia, or was given too strong a dose.
We are praying that Kelsey recovers and is wide awake by now.

Hey Sleepy head. I know your concerns Kim. Mina was the same way when I had her spayed, but if she isn't better in another day or so I would contact the vet. Mina got back to herself about four days after she was spayed.

I'm relieved to report that Kelsey is up and moving about today! She really gave me a scare! The lady from the clinic called me bright and early this morning to check on her, she was really worried about her yesterday too! I have used this clinic hundreds of times, and never have had a problem ... don't know what type of anesthesia they used though. Like I said, Millie was done actually AFTER Kelsey yesterday, and she was up and meowing at me when I picked them up. I guess it just affects different kitties differently, like with humans! Thank God they only have to go through this ONCE!
Thanks for the concern for her, I think she is out of the woods now! :)
