I got this the other day from the Belgian list.

Thought some of you might care about this....after promoting the High Volume
Breeders business and getting behind PAWS, the AKC has now outdone itself.

Today at the Delegates meeting, the AKC announced that the Board has signed a
contract with Petland Discount stores to educate store employees about the
importance of AKC registration. The plan is that the store will charge the AKC
registration fee at the time of sale and register the puppy on line. My
understanding is that the Board voted 12 to 1 to enter into this contract.

Write, email, call your Board members, especially contact Dennis Sprung...tell
them to activate the termination clause in the contract...that we, the
constituents and customers of the AKC, do NOT want the AKC involved in business
with a pet shop!

Please forward and cross post.

I think people need to contact AKC and threaten to switch to other registries unless this new contract is changed.

OH MY GOD!!! i'm DEFINATLY writing them! also sedning this too all my dog show friends. I'd much rather switch to UKC than support something that supports petstores...especailly petland!

Which is one major reason I personally hate show dogs and people involved. The akc has never done anything good for dogs. Its just a fashion show that promotes breeding over spaying/neutering. Please don't turn this into an arguement, its just an honest opinion.

I'll bite my tongue and smile quietly at the dog show nay-sayers because obviously, there are some very skewed opinions here.. (registries are not the ones to be blamed over overpopulation).. HOWEVER, that is an ATROCIOUS move on AKC's part. I can not possibly understand how they could endorse PETLAND - a.k.a. the most disgusting pet store on the face of this earth. That is stupid beyond stupidity.

Agreed, registries certainly don't do anything to help the overpopulation problem, but they don't cause it -- the backyard breeders and puppy mills do. It's sad to think that someone can hate my dogs just because they are show dogs. It takes alot of training and socialisation that alot of normal dogs don't get -- my dogs are lucky.

Supposedly there is now a petition out there to do with this. Not sure where it is though.

I have the up most respect for the show breeders whom try to
better the breed.
If this is true about AKC joining in with Petland,
Than whomever controls AKC SOLD OUT their morals for the almighty $$$.
I will think twice before I ever register another dog with them. :(

The akc has been registering dogs for puppy mills for a long time. Nobody "sold out", its just something they've always done.

It's not just the AKC -- any registry (including non-show ones) will register dogs that come from bad breeding. A registry is by NO means a way to determine whether or not a breeder is good. It is to determine whether or not the dog is purebred (which also must be taken with a grain of salt as many of them aren't), it is used to keep track of dogs, lines, and information about them, and it is used so that you can show or work your dog in events that are put together by other members of the registry. A registry is a registry -- no matter what it's for, even dog related or not. It is still just a registry. And the extreme majority of dogs registered with AKC are not even close to being show dogs.

It is because of people thinking that it is MORE than a registry and that it DOES determine that a puppy is "better" that I disagree with Petland puppies being registered with it. With the CKC it is illegal to sell a pet shop puppy with papers.

AKC, unfortunatly, IS selling out. They are having some money issues right now and this is basically their way of repairing it. By supporting the registration of pet store puppies, which, in a world where people understood that registration isn't proof of a good puppy, would be fine, but unfortunatly we live in w world where everyone thinks it is, and AKC is taking advantage of that. Just a registry or not, it's wrong.
