View Full Version : Baby Ebony died today!

Heather Wallace

Just to let you all know my sad news, Ebony died today during her spaying operation.

I am heart broken!:(

Should I put her body in the hutch with her mum, so that Bunny knows Ebony hasn't just simply abandoned her? I read that somewhere.

I am going to the vets now to pick her up.

I hope she had a good Bunny life.

Love Heather xxx:( :(

Heather, how did that happen? Is it unusual? I've never heard of pets having trouble during spaying. Yikes. What did the Vet say?

I bet you are heart broken. You will be in my thoughts today.

Poor baby.

:(

She had a heart attacked under the anistectic. Yes rabbits are at a high risk of dying during spaying etc.

Heather, I didn't know that about bunnies. I suppose that would be an issue when deciding whether to spay or not. Poor bunny rabbit. At least she wasn't in any pain.

Gosh.

I am so sorry to hear that, but you know that Ebony had the best bunny life possible!

I don't think I'd put the body in with her - didn't you say they were squabbling recently? Bunny will just think that her daighter has grown up and moved away, I bet.

Oh Heather! :( It's so sad! Poor bunny and you! Didn't know that could happen - but she went quick without suffering, try to remember that! I'm sure she had a good bunny life with you around!

I think it's a very good idea to put her body with her mum.

Will keep you in my thoughts!

Thanks everyone, we put Ebony's body in the hutch with Bunny and when we returned she was lying beside her. So sad.

We haveburied her in the back garden where the rabbits run and play, It is nice to think that Ebony will be there in the summer time, in spirit if not in body.

I am trying to reintroduce the boys with their mum so that she won't be so lonely, but it will take time!

Thanks again for all the support.

{{{Heather}}},

I'm so shocked and saddened by your news. So sorry to hear of your loss. Will hold you and your fur-babies in my thoughts and prayers.

Little Ebony had a wonderful life and an easy passing. I believe she is happy at the Bridge now. This probably isn't much comfort now, but she always seemed so happy in her photos and your stories. It did seem an idealic life for a bunster.

Take care of yourself right now. This is a dreadful loss for you.

I'm very sorry about your loss. Please know that you were trying to do the best for her throughout her entire life, including making the decision to spay your bun. You were well educated about the problems of NOT spaying (namely unwanted pregnancy and the high incidence of uterine/ovarian cancer in female buns) and did what you thought would make your little one's life healthy and happy.

Sometimes, unfortunately, surgery can cause complications for buns, but you were trying to keep her longterm health in mind. I myself was very nervous about neutering my 6 month old male bun. You are a wonderful bun caretaker, and will no doubt continue to bring happiness into the lives of your other buns:-)

I never heard about this before ; the bunny was still so young and strong , but it happened anyway . Must be a serious operation !!

We have a female bunny too ; as she never sees other males , I decided not to spay her ! I would hate to loose her !!

Take care okay !!

Heather, I'm so sorry to hear about little Ebony!

Making important decisions for our beloved animals can be so difficult, and then to have something go wrong -- oh what a heartache! I hope that all your fond memories of Ebony will be of some comfort during this sad time.

Thank you for sharing your bun family with us, and helping us learn more about the ups (and downs) of bunny life!

Heather, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I know that there are no words that will ease the pain you are feeling now but just know that you have many people who care about you and are thinking of you and praying for your strength to get through this difficult time.

When Kilo (dog) had died last year, we didn't let any of the animals see him before we buried him. When our cat (Misty) died last month, I decided to let each animal say good bye. When Kilo died, my other dog was looking for him and was pretty unsettled for a while. He didn't do that with Misty. It seemed to be a little easier on the animals having seen Misty.

Heather I am incredibly sorry for you and your furfamily. That was a horrible shock. I didn't know that about bunnies, but if I were in your shoes I would have done the same thing; take Ebony to get spayed. I know that Ebony had a great life and she had a peaceful passing.

I don't know what else to say...I am truly at a loss. Rest in peace, sweet, dear, adorable Ebony.

Spaying any pet is when they take the female reproductive organs out in a surgery...... neutering is for male pets... I just learned through this post that rabbits are high risk for dying during a spaying surgery :(

Yes they are at risk much more than dogs and cats, but things have been inproving over the years for the op on buns.

My vet said that she has only lost 2 rabbits in the past 2-3 years, so things are improving greatly since people are being more educated about rabbits etc.

It was just unlucky that Ebony didn't survive the anistectic. My vet also said that she does advise spaying and always would for the health and well being of our female buns.

Today Bunny honked at me, which is basically an aggressive thing. Maybe she needs some time on her own?

Many thanks again for all the great support, I am having a memorial for her on heavens gardens so I will post you guys the link when it is ready ok?

No Popcornbird... it is not mean to spay and neuter animals...

Those are some reasons why you would choose to spay. Spaying and neutering is a very common operation and it is very rare that an animal passes on during surgery. Bunnies are just high risk. I think it is more mean to not spay your animal and end up putting the unwanted babies in the pound to endure a very hard life.

Wow. All I can say is, what a big slap in the face. When I read the title of this post I started to get tears in my eyes. Ebony was my favorite bunny you had. It makes me think twice of getting Gypsee spayed. She'll either take the risk of the antistetic or take the chance of dying from cancer. It's not easy to make a decision like this when you know it's possible and risky. I will pray for Ebony and for you to be strong and love your other buns just as much.

Everyones messages have been really special, Ebony would have loved all of the atttention and love.

Since the weather is ok today I am going to put the bunny boys inthe garden but I will have to split the run in two as Cadbury is still atcking poor Twinkle. Gives me a chance to clean out their hutches with them causing havoc at the same time.

Hi Heather,
I am so sorry to hear about your sweet Ebony, this has touched me very much as I am a bunny lover.
I got my first one when I was a young child and when my dear sweet "Friskie" died I was so upset....from then on my dear Mother gave me anything to do with bunnies for every occasion....and even though Mom has gone now my children know my love of these very special creatures, and have continued the tradition of a bunnie for every occasion.
Please know that I feel your saddness.

POPCORNBIRD
You mentioned that spaying/neutering sounded mean. It is actually quite the opposite. Especially in dogs and cats, it reduces the chance of breast, uterine, cervical, testicular cancers. Females having just one heat cycle greatly increases the chance of these cancers.
Here are some statistics, from Dog Fancy magazine, for dogs from 2000.
An unspayed female dog, her mate, and all her puppies, none are ever neutered or spayed add up to:
1 year- 16
2 years - 128
3 years - 512
4 years - 2,048
5 years - 12,288
6 years - 67,000

And cats and rabbits go into heat more often then dogs so I can only imagine that those numbers are more than dogs. So you see as responsible pet owners, spaying and neutering, unless you are a responsible breeder is a necesitty. Nearly half of those puppies will end up in the shelter or worse. More puppies are born than there are homes to accomodate them, Millions are abdoned and put to sleep in animal shelters.
This is just some FYI in case you ever get a dog/cat. :)
Once again Heather you have my sympathy with your loss.
