This is the type of buckle I'm talking about:

I'm about to order a bunch of collars and can't decide which buckle type I want. The metal one looks more sturdy than the plastic and I think it's better looking in general on the collars, but I was just wondering how heavy they are, if they are durable, etc. I've never seen them except for on websites so have no idea what they're like and I don't want to order something that I know nothing about. So, does anyone have any experience with these? If so, would you recommend them or am I better of just sticking with a plastic buckle?

I've never had any experience with metal-color "fasteners", but I think they would be better, Rusty can't have the plastic ones.. as he has snapped out of them and broke the plastic on them. So we can't take this chance because he dog aggresive, and some collars are so cute that have the plastic one. :( But now he has a leather collar, that ajustable to fit if we want if tighter.

Star has one...it's a little heavy, but not enough to make me worry. I really like it.

Kirk has one right now on a collar from Planet Dog (http://planetdog.com/leashes.asp?thePage=1). It is heavier than plastic, but not terribly so. It seems very sturdy...we've had no problems after using it almost exclusively for almost 3 months. I would recommend them. :)

Both of my dogs have a metal buckle. It is very sturdy I don't think the weight should be an issue unless you have a toy dog ;) The one thing is the buckles get scratched really quickly. I can take a picture of what they look like now after a couple months of use.

Star and Sherman both have that type of buckle - I wouldn't buy anything else. I've had the plastic buckles break twice, and I don't trust the traditional buckles where you have a loose length of collar leftover. (if there's a way out of something, a husky will find it). I tried the martingales, I think they're really pretty. Many of the sled dog people use them, but I didn't care for them, as I adjust my collars pretty often and my dogs didn't like me slipping them over their heads.
