My sweet (nawtee) big guy needs a thread of his own! He has been battling terrible mouth sores for several months already! He has large granulomas and very red, sore gums. We tried two different antibiotics, and now he is getting steroid (Depo) shots every two weeks. He has lost a bit of weight from not wanting to eat as much too. My vet said that he will need several more Depo shots, maybe for another couple of months at 2 week intervals. If this turns out to be stomatitis, instead of the granuloma thing, then he may have to have all of his teeth pulled. However, she said she hates to do that because his teeth look so good! :(
Please give my big boy some words of encouragement, and gentle kisses for his sore, sore mouth!

Prayers are coming for Big Dexter that he does not have to have his teeth pulled.
John Hancock went through that, and I amost lost him.
And it was 1200 Dollars, 5 Years Ago.
WE are praying for Dear Dexter.

Awwwww Dexter, you look so sad. I don't know what to say that will make you feel better except that even feeling bad, you are still a beautiful boy! Don't give up, Mommie and the white coats are trying their best to get you well.
Think positive Dexter, you're going to start getting well right now! :)

Poor guy, that sounds so painful! I agree with the vet that it would be a shame to pull healthy teeth! :( Sending vibes out his way.
Give him a gentle hug from me.

Kisses to Dexter, but on the top of his head, so I don't make his sore mouth any more sore!

Poor Dexter, he must be pretty uncomfortable. Prayers that the medication works and he'll be good as new in no time! Dexter, you look so soft and fuzzy. If you were in Trenton I'd be giving you head scritchies, and lots of smoochies. You are one handsome guy!
Hi Dexter, I'm sorry to see that you're having problems right now. I want to join all of your other kitty friends in wishing you a fast recovery and that you'll be all better. Just remember one thing... the whitecoat is your friend, the whitecoats know how to make us feel better when we don't feel good. They can be scary and sometimes give us a big oowie, but they only want to help us. Let us know how things go?
Thinking of you

Hi Groucho, Dex here! I don't like the oowie shot, but even worse is when the vet forces my mouth open. How would she like me to force her to open her mouth when it was all red and puffy and had big sores in it? Meowmmy keeps saying they are only trying to help, but I'm not convinced.

Awww...poor Dex! PT Prayers do amazing things and you are getting lots and lots of them!
Does he like yogurt? might soothe his mouth a bit and help the flora balance...just a thought...or some saline solution to help the inflammation in the mouth? (I used to get some mouth sores when I was a kid, so I remember salt water, borax and honey, and LOTS of vitamin C. If only it was that simple for out furbabies!)
hugs and kisses to dear Dex! Get well soon!

Although the saline solution would be a great suggestion, Dexter is nearly impossible to medicate .... especially now with a sore mouth ... he won't let you open it! The yogurt idea is worth trying though! Thanks!

Aww Dexter, I really hope they can help you and your sore mouth, who wants to live when you can't stuff your face with your favourite foods!
Nevermind your mum is doing her best to try and cure it and I'm sure in the end they will and you'll be able to munch on whatever you want to again.
Sending lots of hugs and kisses to you to help heal your sore mouth. ;)

Oh Dexter....I have the same thing. Been getting the Depo shots for a year, and slowly things are getting better for me. I've put back on some weight (I was very skinny there for a while) and while I still have stinky mouth sometimes, my vet thinks I will be able to keep my pearly whites. I also "get" to have a lovely tasting anti-biotic along with my shot (10 days I suffer this indignity) called Antirobe. It helps when the red gums get especially tender.
Every session, I can go longer between shots and antibiotics, so I am getting better. Be patient and thank your mom for taking such good care of you.
Get well soon....

Hi Percy! Thanks for sharing your story with me and my meowmmy! I had to take that yucky Antirobe (Clindamycin) too .... but it didn't help me at all .... so I suffered through that for nothing! :( I hope I don't have to take shots for a whole year ... my vet already said maybe a couple of months ... oh brother! My meowmmy hates to see me losing weight because I have always been her big fluffy boy! Now I'm furry with a bony back underneath. :( She worries so much about me not eating enough. Then yesterday when she gave me some really yummy wet food, I ate it too fast and "left it" all down the hallway. I sure am glad she saw it and didn't step in it! ;)
Thanks again for sharing with me in this .... purrs, Dexter.

Hi again Dex! I hear what you're saying about whitecoats forcing things on us that hurt a lot. When I was about 5 months old Meowmie took me to the vet about that getting fixed thing even though I wasn't broken. My vet took blood for a test that showed I was positive for FIP. My vet said because I was under 6 months old maybe I tested positive for my mommycat's antibodies so she did the test two more times. Fortunately I don't have FIP but the only way to be sure was to do those tests. I agree it isn't very polite to force your mouth open like that, but your vet needs to see all those red, puffy, big sores in your mouth so she can know what to do. I can understand why you're not convinced that they're trying to help, how can they be helping when they do things that hurt? Keep in touch, my friend, I'll do whatever I can to help you through all this nastiness... kitty man to kitty man.
Your friend,
Groucho

Oh Kim, I am so sorry to hear about your gorgeous boy Dexter. How awful he must feel.
Prayers on the way that the shots and medication will have him on a full and speedy recovery and that he is able to keep his pearly whites.
((((((HUGS)))))) to you Kim as I can only imagine how upsetting this must be for you, knowing that Dexter is in pain like this.
You're such a good meowmie to make sure he is more comfortable and I hope he is able to eat soon so that he can start putting weight back on. Poor baby. Please give him a gentle hug and kiss for me.

Kim...when I mentioned saline solution, I was thinking of the bottles of saline for contact lenses.
The bottles can shoot a thin stream of saline pretty darn well from several inches.
Dex may not like the taste - but if his mouth is open at all...or you can even gently move his lips, you might be able to squirt some on his gums.
Let me know if you try the yogurt and how Dex likes it...and if it helps.
HUGS
