I thought I was going to get two hamsters yesterday! But guess what? We got five! Oh, don’t worry; they are not all in the same cage. Chewy & Cookie are in my sister’s room. Chewy was named Chewy because he chewed out of his transfer box! Cookie is named Cookie because she loves cookies. Well… her kind of cookies! They are both short-haired Teddy Bear hamsters. Jake is in my brother’s room. He’s named Jake because his colors just say “Jake” on them, LOL. He’s a medium-haired Teddy Bear hamster. Marcy & Nutmeg are both Dwarf hamsters. They’re in my room and they are actually my hamsters. Marcy’s named Marcy because in another language, Russian I think, it means “black one”, and she’s black and white. Nutmeg, Maggie for short, fits her because of her colors. I haven’t got any pictures right now, but will have some up soon! So check back soon.

Are the two Syrians housed together?
They sound adorable. Sounds like in your house, everytime you turn around you must see a hamster. :D
They sound cute....The teddy bear hamsters actually aren't a breed....They are called Syrians. The long hairs are long-haired syrians.
The syrians should not be housed together (If they are in the same cage) They will kill each other (I'm certain about that. One morning a bloody mess and one or more dead hamsters will be woken up to.)
If they are in different cages, than don't mind what I just said, :)

Eek. They seemed to get along when I was over there...

Syrians can NOT be housed together. They can seem to get along until like I said, one morning you wake up to a bloody mess and dead hamsters. Syrians in the wild, CHOOSE to live alone, it is unfair to force them to live together in captivity, and extremely dangerous.

They only get along now because they are young but soon the will start to fight and if you don't have dead hamsters you have expensive vet bills.

She was talking to me about hamster dividers. I have never seen them  And never heard of them. I doubt you're going to find one Sarah, unless you search around ALOT and pay some money... I think it's best you just get another cage and another wheel. I have an extra bowl I could probably find and give to you. All you really need to but is the cage, wheel, and water bowl. And that'll probably be a grand total of $25-$30. Good luck!
You can make bin cages which give ALOT of room for the syrians, (Syrian hamsters *need* a good amount of floor space to move about, *and* a wheel, without them getting these things they are at risk of cage paralysis) and they are very cheap. Here is info on building a bin cage:
http://www.hamster-heaven.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1109532059
I've succesfully housed 2 syrians together, but as said it's not recommended. We ended up separating them after about 2 days, because they were starting to show some agression. Thanks to that stupid hamster, he got my other hamster sick.
More like thanks to the person who decided to house two solitary animals together, and it got your hamster sick makes me think *without* even a quarantine. It's not the poor hamster's fault, it's yours and anyone else who decided to house them together. he's an innocent life, unlike human beings.
Noo, it's basically not my fault since I was 10, and had not much proper info on animal care. It's not my full responsibility to research and know about them at that age..and I'm not blaming it on the hamster, (although didn't like him much anyways since he bit me), I'm blaming the stupid petstore that lets their hamsters breed rapidly and over and over and over. They also said that we could house them together fine, so don't blame me.
He bit you because a) your hands smelled like food or b) You scared him. Again, not his fault.
Perhaps it wasn't your fault since you were so young, but please don't say hey were successfully housed together since they weren't (As you already stated they were seperated within 2 days)
It's not simply not recommended to house syrians together, it is HIGHLY frowned upon by anyone who's done a hint of research on them, and extremely dangerous to the hamster's lives. It is a very important point, *extremely* important point which is why I am stressing it so much.

Come on guys, you two don't need to argue over something that is in the past. You live and learn. Bri has learned from her mistakes, so why bash her for it now? You're not going to change the past.
I'm not arguing and I'm not bashing. I was simply stressing the point that 1) They were not successfully housed together and 2) It's far worse than simply not reccomended to house them together.
If you want me to argue though, I'll be happy to

Sounded more like arguing to me. but whatever, we've lost the point of this thread, and although I don't think it's that great that sarah ended up with 5 hamsters, I'm keeping my thoughts to myself.

No, he bit me because he was sick and didn't like me...
They were successfully housed together, but I thought it better to separate them since the other one was acting a bit weird (but not showing much agression.)
and exactly.. and I'm not saying it's okay to.. I've had hamsters since I was 10, and since then I have done research and know alot about them.
You're doing so many rolleyes soon your eyes are going to pop out of your head! I made this board and I do not want it to turn into a fight. Your hamster didn't bite you because he "didn't like you", it's because either you scared him, your hands smelt like his food, or he wasn't tamed enough at the pet store. I've already been bitten many times by my hamsters, and I don't blame them, I blame the stupid pet store or myself or having my hands smell like food before I take them out, or I blame myself or scaring them. If the hamster was yours, it was obviosuly your responsibilty, even if you were 10. What was he sick with? Do you know? Did he die from it or did you take him to the vet for medication?

And now it's all about Bri's hamster? WHOAH!!!!!!!! Lets quite arguing and lets not start another fight Bri? Okie? Now lets get back onto subject and talk about Dwarf hamsters. Every thread we make its almost like someone says in their head oooo I'm gonna think of something negative to say.

Nope, not yet, we've been so busy. But when my mom comes home from work I'll most definetley ask her to bring me to the pet store. We needs crickets anyway :)
I really suggest taking a look at the bin cage link I posted earlier :) There is also a section of pictures of bin cages that people have built here:

Of course they aren't the only cage, I just think they're great lol :D

Sure I'm interested in those bin cages, but I'm not into buying off the internet. Too much of a risk of getting your code/phone stolen or whatever. I'd much rather like to buy one from the pet store later today :)
Well, excuse me! I have a right to express my opinions. It's a message board, not the real world.. It's called resist the temptation to buy 5??? I definitely know I couldn't handle 5, even if I was back down to my 2 dogs. Don't even say I don't know what I'm talking about.. god, I can't even say an opinion anymore without getting freaking yelled at. For one thing, I don't even see why I defend myself anymore.. It's pretty pointless since everyone is going to continuously yell at me for my pet's care when you sure as heck don't even know me. Well, sorry for not keeping my thoughts to myself. As said, I do have a right to my opinions, just as the rest of you. And you're blaming me for starting these fights? Pfft.
You may not be able to handle 5 but I can. People have differences you know  And guess you bought five? My mom! I didn't even know we were getting 5 until the cash register. 2 were supposed to be my sister's, and 1 my brothers, 2 mine. Not all mine. EDIT: Oh, also, I thought you said you were keeping your feelings to yourself? Now you said you had a right to express your feelings? Hmmm... don't get it

Oh sure.. Excuse me for caring about the wellbeing of a hamster. (and if someone brings me and my 8 bettas into this when it's not needed..) They need time, socialization, and weekly cage cleanings. It's just kind of hard to do that with 5, even if 3 of those belong to your brother and sister. Okay, maybe you can handle them, just hope your dad isn't allergic to them, too.
and I'm trying to keep my feelings to myself, because someone always brings me and my pets into arguments, and I'm tired of it.

You know why people bring you into their conversations (NOT arguments)? Because you're a bad example. I take the hamsters out daily and tame & play with them. I let them run in their ball, run around my room under supervision, put them in a dry bathtub to play with their toys I bought for them. I hold them all the time and they're getting a lot better, I haven't got bitten in a while. We have time to clean their cages, we have 5 bags of bedding, and we've got to use it don't we? Also, who brought you into this conversation? No one, so keep trying to keep your feelings to yourself  No one even brought you here you were one of the people that said ooooooooo I'm gonna say something negative like Makayla said.
Warahgirl: The first link I posted (On page 1) Is a link to intstructions on how to build a bin cage, and the second one is just people's own bin cages as examples on what can be done with them (Tubes, connected cages, etc...Not ones for sale ;) )
Pretty much what you would need to build a bin cage is wire too small for hammy to get through (home depot) a bin (Wal-mart), electrical ties and a drill. It is more effort than buying a cage but cheaper ;) (Providing you can borrow a drill from someone :P )

Uhh, more like arguments to me. You're the one who's rehoming your dog, because of your inability to research before you bought him, not me. You're the one who was already thinking of another puppy when you still had poor Max. Ohh, if I'm such a bad example, show me one thing that says I'm a bad pet owner. I'm selling my own items to buy better food for my dogs. Don't see you starting to buy better things for your dogs. Didn't see you trying to the best of your ability to keep Max. Oh good for you.. I thought you just got them the other day? That would be a bit soon to say for a long time. I never mentioned anything about the bedding, and it could always go to the shelter if you don't use it. Umm, actually yes I was brought into this conversation, and it seems lately because I'm a "bad example" everyone is bringing me into their conversations. I'm tired of it. You don't know me, you don;t have the right to call me a "bad example" when you shouldn't be talking, and you have no right to judge me. I only said something negative, because I do happen to care about the wellbeing of animals.

BUT Warahgirl1995, that comment about Briana being a "bad example" was totally rude and uncalled for. You shouldn't be saying this because if I remeber correctly, many threads you have started turned into an argument and YOU started them. How is she a bad example?? I HIGHLY doubt you would enjoy being brought up in controversial posts and arguments so why do it to anyone else?? Can we PLEASE stop this stupid argument now!

Actually, I was going to use my $106 of allowance, along with a day of dog walking's money, to buy Max a cable, chain, dog house, toys, and everything. My parents said no and wouldn't let me buy it, so I used to for dogs at the shelter. I did try the best of my ability to keep Max. The BEST of my abilities, and they got me grounded for a looong time.
Where were you brought into this conversation?
Can't find anything? Hmm... I think I know the reason... you brought yourself into this.

This arguement is stupid. I see too many threads where Bri is put down, and too many threads just generally turning into arguements. 5 hamsters is a lot to get at one time if you ask me, but if you are caring for them, then there is no problem. Do not keep syrians together. I will keep an eye on this thread but really I don't want to see the arguement progress further. :(

I am glad you got hamsters but 5 is alot to take on at once. At least you have you siblings help :)
Can I ask you a few questions?
What cages do you have currently? If you have crittertrail or habitrail for example you need at least two cages attached for one hamstr. Syrian or dwarf. If you have wire cages what are the dimensions? Using an aquarium what size? Also you don't buy bin cages at a petstore you buy them say at wal*mart and make them yourself. All you have to do is drill holes in them if you don't want to go all fancy ;)
What shavings are you using? Pine or Cedar? http://www.hamsterhideout.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=778 Check out that link. Here is a link that talks about some safe bedding and shavings. http://www.hamsterhideout.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=2464
What wheels are you using? Runged wheels are bad and can hurt the hamsters feet. Make sure you use solid surfaced wheels.
Are you picking out the sunflower seeds from their food? Sunflower seeds are fattening so to much is unhealthy.
Please do not take my post rudly. It is not intended that way. ;)

The Syrians have wire/plastic cages and the Dwarfs have a wire cage. The shavings I am using are neither of those but I am using a cotton substance. The wheels I am using are plastic and dont have any wire or metal on them. Yes, I am picking the sun flower seeds out of their food.
