View Full Version : I have cancer....the road to recovery
Hi Gini,
I just spoke to Vicki!! I phoned for an update and I spoke to Vic's nurse, who said that she was doing fine?? (standard info!) and the next thing I heard Vic's very groggy voice saying HI! She said that all she wanted to do was go to sleep, so I let her go, but it was reassuring to hear her voice.
Will keep in touch
Well, it is me again. I just got this email from her friend. I thought you all would enjoy it. Finally..............you have to knock her out - but SHE WANTS TO SLEEP! She must be totally exhausted!
Sleep tight, Slick, don't let the bedbugs bite! :D :D xxoo

It is me, one last time tonight. I wanted to share that Slick's friend knows absolute NOTHING about Pet Talk. We have all talked about it - some people you tell - and other's you just don't.
I have to really watch what I say because on the tip of my tongue was
OH, I HAVE TO SHARE THIS WITH PET TALK!!! She wouldn't have a clue
what I was talking about.
What's a Pet Talk? Is it a bird that talks? and is your Pet?:D :D :D

Boy, talking on the phone within hours of sir-jury! I knew she was tough but gee whiz!!! ;) :D :D :D
Thanks so much for the uppydates, Gini!
I did get a chance to talk to Slick yesterday morning as she was getting ready to go. She said we should all place bets on when she'll make her first post to PT after the sir-jury. She said she'd be in the hospital for a week and I told her my bet was that if she gets released in the morning, she will be ON PT before the end of the day. Maybe not posting, but on, then make her first post the day after she's home. However, if she doesn't get released until the afternooon, she won't make it on until the next day. I don't know about everybody else, but just being released is a tiring event and when you finally get home all you feel like doing is going back to bed!
Wonderful, wonderful news to start my day! Now.....if Kiki would only come home.... :(
My phone rang a minute or two ago and it was her friend, Betty again. SLICK CALLED HER THIS MORNING!! She said she couldn't talk long because they had her up and walking. She said "CALL GINI AND TELL HER!" They were also moving her to the twelfth floor this morning. Not sure what that means - if it will be her permanent room.
She DID NOT remember talking to Betty last night at all. Hmmm, those were good drugs! :D
That's our girl! Up and at em bright and early.

Yay, Slick! Walking in your cool slippers, I hope.
I wanted to post something here about Slick's home address.
In all of our conversations, this is one thing I overlooked. Slick is a very private person and I don't feel comfortable about giving out her home address unless I have her permission - which I don't.
She is going to be recuperating at home for a long time - so could I ask all of you to wait until I can talk to her in person on the phone and ask if it is alright to give out her address?
I hope you all understand and thanks.

Hey there , Slick~~~~~
Like everyone else on Pet Talk, you can count on me to make another reply on this thread!!!
And, like all of those who have posted before me, I have had you on my mind , and, in my HEART for several days!!!
You are out from under that cloud of Darkness, Dear Pet Talk Member ~~~ Dear Slick!!!
Hey, I think the Wizard gave me a Brain Today!! ( You must have a connection somewhere in OZ!!!)
Hi everyone, Friday 9/15 - almost 9 PM.
I had a call this evening from Slick's friend and she was able to talk very briefly to Slick and also to Slick's Mom.
Apparently the "walking" part is a bit exaggerated. They had her "standing"
and also got her in a chair to sit for a while today.
She has been moved to the next level of care which is a 12th floor ward with five women in the room and one nurse on constant duty.
I am sorry to report that Slick had a terrible day. She told Betty to please just call Gini and tell her I had a really rough day and I am in a lot of pain.
This was to be expected I suppose - but hurts to hear just the same. Even if the cutest male nurse in the world came along, it doesn't sound as though Slick would be in the mood.
Slick does not have a phone in this room - I think she used her own cell phone or the hospital's portable to call Betty. When Betty called the hospital they would not let her talk to Slick - but gave Slick the message and Slick promptly got a phone and called back, but it was a very short conversation.
Connie - I think we need to ask those angels to lift the weight of the pain away from her as soon as possible - or double dose those good drugs.
xxoo to all - I will post more as I learn more.

As much as the walking around sounded great, what she is experiencing I'm sure is much more "normal" for what she has been through! :( They always force you to at least try to stand the day after surgery, to help prevent you from developing pneumonia. Most of the time the patients look at the nurses like "you want me to do WHAT?" I'm sure they will keep those pain meds coming, and hopefully she will get some relief and rest as well. Hang in there, Slick .... better days are ahead! ;)
Hugs,
Kim

Thanks Gini for keeping everyone posted ... although pain is normal part of any surgical procedure, it is 'painful' for us to know that a dear friend is feeling so uncomfortable.
I hope the messages coming through from PT are somehow soothing for Slick and give her a moment's ease from time to time - a smile is often times a very good pain remedy albeit brief.
And so to you dear Slick, I am wishing many, many, many smiles to ease your pain.
Sleep well and take time to heal.
Gentle hugs,
Betty

I just got off the phone with her night nurse, Sue. Slick had a good night although still in pain of course. She has a drip pain medicator, not one of those buttons she can control but that's a good thing as it keeps the meds going even as she sleeps. Sue said her mood and spirits were good, all things considered. No elevated temperature and all vitals are good. They will be getting her up for a short walk later today (it's only 5:30 a.m. there - shift change in another two hours). I asked Sue to please tell her that Gini and I will be holding her hands and she will have lots of friends holding her up during her walk, even if she can't see us she will feel our support. I could almost feel Sue smiling and she assured me she would let Slick know.

Slick - I hope you have lots of meds for the first two days...and lots of healing and more comfort!
Gini - I can send a bottle of pure aloe spray for the skin - it's non-aerosol, so doesn't "blast" the skin. Might help the incisions in a few days. It's very cooling and soothing.

I agree. When I talked to her, she almost talked more about Kiki coming home than she did about her surgery. I just KNOW that knowing Kiki is home will make her happy and help her through another day.
Thanks for the uppydates, Gini and Laurie. I know she knows the pain is to be expected, but I also know that doesn't help any while she's going through it. But it sounds like everything is going well and as expected, so I'm confident she will continue to gain strength every day. Seriously, the pain is to be expected, but I'm sorry she's having such a rough time of it. I'll never forget the pain I was in after my mastectomy and that was through the really good drugs. "They" say you forget it; you don't. For whatever reason, the third day after surgery is usually the worst and then it suddenly gets better.

I'll call you Gini, Randi, Karen (do I have your number?), ChrisH ~ what a happy phone call :)
Excellent! Thanks for the update! :)

Mayor Karen, Gini and just a few others know that one door slammed shut on me last week. But a window opened with speaking with Slick today and knowing Ki is home with Kay. The lord works in mysterious ways I guess. Maybe my Thunder helped Kiara to find her way home.

To hear she's in pain breaks my heart. I hope the pain is easing and the road to recovery will be swift.
Thinking of you Slick!!
I just got off of the phone after talking to Slick as well and she sounds amazing. Today she walked up the hall about half way with her physiotherapist and YES she had her fuzzy cat slippers on.
She has a bunch of tubes she isn't happy about and she told me that they have reduced the medication she receives by tube and gave her....as she described them.........two beautiful blue pills
All she wanted to do was sleep and she missed some visitors this afternoon that will return this evening.
I noticed that she didn't cough ONCE while we were on the phone - and that is a first for me.
I have asked her permission to give out her home address and she said yes, that is fine - but would prefer if you email me or p/m me and I can reply with her address.
Her sense of humor was in prime shape so that really encouraged me as well.
If she is giving me a bad time - then I KNOW she is getting better.
She just needs to rest.
Dear God, THANK YOU for answering our prayers for our dear Slick!!

No phone yet - she said she is in a "step-down" ward with six to eight women - don't think she could focus on anything but those blue pills :D
and two nurses on duty just for them.
She won't have her own phone until she is in her private room. The nurses have been great about taking their portable phones in to her to use.

Maybe I can grab a bottle of that Pusser's Rum from Thursdays and take it up to Slick - probably wouldn't go too well with the meds - but it would be virtual rum anyway - and no harm done..
Let's see rum and those special drugs the hospital won't share until you actually had something done.... :p pain what pain.
Seriously, Gini and Laurie thank you for the updates, and let her know we're thinking about her a wishing a speedy recovery. I hate to hear she's in so much pain, but hopefully she'll be in less pain with each day that goes by and soon she'll be up and ready for anything.

Hey, Slick! YOU MADE IT! The worst is over and now you are on the road to recovery and regaining your health. It may be a struggle and a journey with some bumps, but if anyone can do it, you can.
Can you feel how many people are praying for you and wishing you well?
I'm so excited that Naomi is our representative to you from Pet Talk. As she takes your hand, feel the touch of the many, many hands here who care about you. As she smiles, feel the joy of all of us who so desperately wanted the surgery to go well. And maybe she will be able to give you a gentle hug - yup, that comes from the rest of us as well.

We ended up giggling like teenagers talking about Pet Talk and orange cones. For the new people, do a search for orange cones. Ever since then I've been seeing more orange cones! They're breeding!

I just tried to post but something screwed up. What I was trying to say was I just spoke with her day nurse and it seems dear Slick really had a painful night and is now sleeping. No "walkies" yet today but nurse said "maybe later this afternoon" - it's only 1 pm-ish there. No Naomi yet but lets hope that Slick is somewhat awake and able to feel our love when Naomi arrives. Gini, I'll call you in a few, I know you are going through much yourself and just want to say HOWDIE to a friend.
Sounds like the beautiful little blue pills wore off.
They aren't keeping her in the hospital for seven days for nothing............
and thank goodness they are monitoring her and right there for her with hopefully more medication to ease the pain.
Oh, how my heart goes out to her!! I hope she is sleeping by now.

I'm home!
When I arrived she was sitting up in bed and her friend Betty was there. She looks pale, and is in a LOT of pain. She said she wasn't impressed with the care she got last night as she felt the night nurses weren't monitoring her as closely as she needs, because they let her pain get to the point of unbearable. I arrived at around 1:30pm, and she had taken pain meds at noon, and her nurse gave her something more at that time, so she's very very painful at this point.
I did go for a short walk with her down the hall and back. She has lots of flowers but they aren't allowed to be in the room with her, but will be moved to her private room when she is ready.
I gave her Dr. Pete (see attached photo) but she had Betty take him home because she wasn't comfortable leaving him in that particular room with her. It's not a typical patient room as there is what looks like a mini nurses station right in there with her. She said it's very noisy at night and the lights are always on, so she's having lots of trouble sleeping. She LOVED Dr. Pete though and is excited to have him with her in her private room.
I get the feeling she's a bit disappointed that it's not moving along quicker, and I don't think she expected this much pain. She really needs our prayers right now folks. She's feeling pretty lousy and definitely needs us around her even if it is in spirit only.
I'm going to try and see her later this week, but it's hard for me to get there before visiting hours are done on a week night because I work. However, if I can't get in before the end of the week I will see about going to see her on the weekend whether it be at her house or in the hospital, wherever she may be.
She was very pleased that I brought her this thread, even though she's a bit too drugged up to read it all right now I know it will brighten her day when she's feeling up to it. When I left she had fallen asleep so I didn't wake her, but asked the nurse to tell her goodbye for me.
So keep her in your prayers and thoughts - she does still need us!

Gosh, Naomi, your hospital has "visiting hours" and enforces them? I've always just pretended I knew what I was doing, walked with confidence, and no one ever stopped me at the hospitals around here ... and I made sure to move out of the way when anyone came in to check on whomever I was visiting.

Being a Canadian myself, the room that Slick is in sounds like the Intensive Care Unit. This is where patients who have had major surgery stay for a few days for close monitering. Hopefully she will be in her private room within the next few days.
Don't be afraid to use your call button Slick, that's what it's there for.
I pray that the terrible pain that you are in Slick will become bearable very soon and then lessen with each day that passes.

Bless your heart, my dear friend - I wish it was possible for all of us to lift your pain away completely.
But surely all of the outpouring of love for you will help.
I pray that they monitor you carefully tonight and that you can hopefully get a good nights sleep.
It sounds like a torture room - not an INTENSIVE care room. This news is hurting us all for you.
Soon you will be in your private room and can get the good rest you need snuggled in with your new furry friend.

Slick,
I am so sorry. I have heard often that it is the nurses, not the docs who don't administer enough pain meds. Nobody should have to be in pain after surgery these days.
I have made that experience myself. My co-workers brought me a Steiff kitty to the hospital (although not as medically experienced as Dr. Pete Feline) and I was 42 years old, lying in bed, not being able to sleep because of pain and I hugged my kitty :) So I hope Dr. Pete is back soon and hugs you- as we cannot come and do that.

Away from the computer for a few days and just catching up. I'm near tears hearing that you're in such pain Slick. Ohhh, I hope that pain goes away real soon. I hate knowing that you are in so much pain, Slick. I think of you every day.
Dr. Pete is adorable! ;)
I just got off of the phone after talking to Slick.
She had a good night and sounded good this morning. Apparently they have got her pain medication under control. She gets her "beautiful" little blue pills every four hours - and as she put it "they main line" they rest and it worked.
She had her catheter removed and she can pee just like the rest of us now.
Hey - she told me to tell you that - so if it is TMI - what can I say?
Like I said, if her sense of humor is in place - I know she is getting better.
It is 8:30 AM and she still hasn't been served any breakfast. Not too sure what that is about.
Her friend told me that she had some food yesterday - half an egg salad sandwich, some milk, and cream of chicken soup. But her sis-in-law brought her a roast beef sandwich from a good deli - so that helped.
She is to be seen by her doctor's this morning and she is really hoping that the chest tube will be removed and she can move into a private room. She really, really wants that to happen today. I sure hope it does.
Her Mom is coming to visit this afternoon - so I will talk to her in the early evening and keep you posted.
She LOVED DR. PETE - what she said was that Naomi showed up with all of "this stuff for me." I think she was overwhelmed.
I could tell that she is a bit spacey with all of the meds and she can't remember who called, who visited or what day it is. I told her again about Kiara coming home - and I think Laurie told her that too - but she didn't remember - so it was good news a second time.
She cut the phone call short because she had to go pee.............now that's what she told me folks - and I am just sharing. :D

I've been unable to connect also, and am so sorry to hear about the pain she's been in, but glad to hear they finally got the beautiful blue pill routine down pat now. ;)
I also know that being able to pee on your own is another big step, and getting the chest tube out will be another. Although.....my dad tells me its very painful. He was kind of out of it when they removed his and later on when he was telling us about it, he told us the doc punched him in the chest. Hurt like h*ll, but it's quick so it only hurts for a short time.
So....hoping things get better every day!

I have not posted since Slick's surgery, but I stop in every day for an update.
I am sorry that she has been in pain, but sounds like the blue pills are helping. One thing that I was told after my surgery (VERY minor compared to what she has been through) was that the pills should be in your system all the time. Don't wait to take one once the pain gets bad. Sounds like her night nurses need to be reminded of that and be certain Slick is well taken care of ALL the time.
Dr. Pete is adorable! I am sure she will love him more once she is in her own room.
And..... so Slick was talking about peeing??? How is that any different than what most of us post on here all the time? I mean come on, we ALL get excited when one of our furbabies is able to poop and/or pee when it has been difficult. This is no different! I am glad that her sense of humor is coming back, that is another sign of healing.
I am saying prayers for Slick daily, and I will take some of that pain from her. I have a pretty high tolerance for pain, so I can take an extra dose for others.
Keep getting better Slick! (((hugs))) from Indiana!

So glad to hear she was finally able to sleep a little. Hopefully the pain won't be so intense soon, that's a bummer :( .
Dr. Pete is adorable, and his mah-ve-lus t-shirt says it all!
More prayers for a quick revcovery, Slick!
I did talk to Slick this evening, and I woke her up when I called - darn, darn, darn.
But maybe it was a good thing because she is scheduled to receive her pain meds at 10 PM and my hope is that for once she will be able to sleep through the night - or at least until the next dosage of pain med.
She is now in a semi-private room - but she was promised a private room.
Her roommate has a "condition" that doesn't make sharing the bathroom too appealing.
There is something that she wanted me to post and I absolutely refused - talk about TMI!!! :D :D :D
So she settled with - well tell them that "all systems are go" - well, we are all family aren't we? Guess you can all handle it!!
In all seriousness - she is better - but not better - the tube from her lungs is really hurting her and she found out today that she will have it for a few more days.
The food they are serving (or not serving) is awful. Her dinner was horrible so she isn't eating much. She wanted some ice water and I had to badger her to ASK FOR IT!! But they did bring some while we were on the phone.
At least she can turn her lights off for the night - and she doesn't have blaring lights to try to sleep under.
Taking it a day at a time - and praying each step of the way..........
She doesn't have the final test results back yet - so I know that is weighing on her mind. And mine too!
xxoo I am going to bed.................zzzzzzzzz

I can only imagine what she wanted you to post!!!!!
She did mention that " all systems are go" ~~~ so, of course she is still the postive Pet Talk Member that we know and love.
Slick, We needed that post from you!!!! :p ( "all systems are go") I get it!! ;)
We are all thinking and praying for you , Slick

(Monday night)
She is now in a semi-private room -
but she was promised a private room.
Her roommate has a "condition" ...
http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/confused.gif
When did we "move" from the Dorm to semi-private?
Being able to turn OFF your lights to sleep in the semi-dark is nice ...
till your Roomie gets a Doc that starts rounds a 5:00AM!
During my January hospital stay, one Roomie's Doc had no clue which wall switch operated
what lights ... He'd stomp into "our" room and turn em ALL on ...
Then start talking to his sleeping patient in a voice LOUD enough to wake the dead
in the room next door! http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/mad.gif
When he was done with his 2 minute "exam" ...
he'd walk out and leave ALL the lights ON!
Hospitals can be Phunn! http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/rolleyes.gif
Hey Slick ~ Feel Better - Soon!!

Thanks for the update, Gini - I think we're all half holding our collective breath for test results. Glad all systems are go.
I hope all the non-hospital food she had lined up people to bring is actually arriving. I didn't want to eat at all when I was in for my surgery - or the times for my asthma, and the foods presented were NOT compelling reasons TO eat!
Still in our prayers, and will be!

Just checking in. Thanks everyone for all the updates and keeping us informed! I'm sure Slick will feel much better once that tube is removed. I can only imagine how uncomfortable that is along with the other medical issues.
When was hospital food actually good? ;) Ick, it's bad enough you're feeling unwell then they slap that fake food in front of you. Maybe it's incentive to make you leave the hospital faster to free up a bed. ;)
(((Hugs))) to Slick and positive test results!

I hope all the non-hospital food she had lined up people to bring is actually arriving.
... the foods presented were NOT compelling reasons TO eat!
Careful with the "outside food"!
I made the mistake of asking my Nurse if I could order a Pizza ...
she about had a stroke on the spot! (I gathered the answer was "NO!")
In my case I was suffering from Ciggy http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/tongue.gif Withdrawal as well as being HUNGRY. http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/frown.gif
Most anything tasted OK - as long as it was filling.
I also learned some "tricks" ...
* Check off EVERYTHING on the menue ... two entrees offered? Ask for BOTH.
They'll either put em both on the Big Plate, or serve #2 as a side.
* 3 veggies Checked on the menue = 3 lil dishes on the tray!
* I'd even get two deserts on occasion; plus milk AND coffee (low-test stuff)
* "Mrs. Dash" became a fix for lack of taste ... and she even came with Breakfast ??? -
so I always had an extra supply for a stubborn "mystery dish" that need a kick in flavour!
* and check about Midnite SNACKS!! Found out (cause I lived across the hall
from the "Supply Room")
that the Nurses had a Treasure Trove of GOOD STUFF deliverd after din-din ...
** Fresh Turkey sammiches on fresh bread with a fake mayo packet
** Real Ice Creme cups - multiple flavours
** Chawklit Pudding (in a generous sized cup)
* ask the midnite Nurse *nicely* and ya got All THREE!
EAT UP - Pepper + Mrs. Dash will "fix" most everything they toss at you!

Goodmorning Slick! Hope you're feeling better today! :) A good nights sleep and a decent meal is a MUST when you're feeling lousy and in a hospital. I hope one of these days you'll feel like me, when I once woke up from anethesia - my first words were: I'm hungry, where's the lunch?
Sending lots of positive thoughts for good test results, general well being and a speedy recovery. :)
((((hugs))))
I talked to Slick's Mom this morning - thinking that she might like to be cheered up as she would be worrying about Slick!
Was I ever wrong!! She promptly started telling me how well everything is going and how "I" shouldn't worry.
She isn't going to visit Slick today because she said that Slick REALLY needs to sleep and get some rest. She mentioned the food and the poor quality too. I think her sis-in-law might be taking her some better food.
The only thing she mentioned is that Slick's feet are swelling. But Slick told me that she took two long walks yesterday - hopefully that exercise will help.
Phred - she moved to a semi-private room yesterday sometime. I will tell her about the "nurses stash" when I talk to her next.

I'm glad Slick's at least in a semi-private room, although the situation sounds less than ideal. Glad all her plumbing is working :p and sorry the food is so bad. Prayers and good thoughts still flowing her way. How's Dr. Pete?
I think that Dr. Pete had to be taken back home because when Naomi delivered it, Slick was still in the intensive step down ward - that was crowded - and a beehive of activity. Slick was afraid he wouldn't be "safe" there. I could be wrong here - but I think that is what happened.

Gini,
Thanks for letting us know. {{{hugs}}} to Slick ......... :D
Here is my evening update. Slick has now been moved to a private room as of this afternoon.
She had a horrible night - had to ring her emergency bell twice. She has had a talk with the nurses that now will attend her in her private room.
She is scheduled to have pain meds more frequently now.
She did have something wonderful today - a bath and her hair washed.
She said the most wonderful woman came in to give her the bath and wash her hair. Slick said she felt so much better to be finally clean again.
I asked her about Dr. Pete and she isn't sure - but it is possible that her Mother took Dr. Pete home with her. Slick said you just DON'T leave anything of value in your room. Her wallet and keys are locked in a safe at the main administration desk. Anything of value would be stolen.
I think this tells us the mental condition Slick was in on Sunday - lots of drugs and she just doesn't remember a lot of things. I asked her if she had seen the T-Shirt for Dr. Pete - and she vaguely remembered. So I described it to her - and now she is anxious to see it.
She does remember a large envelope that Naomi brought with a lot of cards inside. Slick asked me to specifically THANK EVERYONE who sent those cards and to tell you how much they mean to her. She wants to go back and look at each one again and again. She also wants to thank Naomi, because she knows she lives at least an hour away - so it was a true heroic
effort on Naomi's part to get to her in the hospital.
The Dr. came to see her right when she was having a bath - so he said he would come back later. It might possibly be this evening as he makes his evening rounds.
The final thing she wanted me to share with you is that she is on the twelfth floor - and her room AND the bathroom have a view to die for. You can "sit" in the bathroom and just gaze out the window forever.
And finally - she did have a good meal. She thinks that better meals go with the private rooms - she had an excellent dinner of ham, corn and scalloped potatoes that she said was just delicious.
That's it for this evening folks - continue to pray for her - this pain sounds pretty horrific.

Oh, good - better pain med administration, private room, and we hafta get Mom to bring back Dr. Pete! :) He can stay on her bed with her, less chance of getting swiped if he's tucked in with her, and that's his purpose - to be there with her, and help omfort and heal her.

I'm so glad to hear that Slick is now in a private room and is getting some decent food too.:) I hope that the nurses will take better care of her and give her pain meds on schedule so she won't be in so much pain. Lots more prayers and positive thoughts are being sent Slick's way. I also hope that Dr. Pete can be sent to her again so she can get a chance to cuddle with him.
I think I need to explain just a bit more about Dr. Pete. Slick said that her room doesn't have a door - it has a curtain - so it isn't all that private.
Because she needs to walk up the hall or use the bathroom - she can't have Dr. Pete with her every second.
Her direct comment was "this is Vancouver" and he could be stolen in a minute. Apparently that is why she had to put her wallet and keys in a locked vault at administration. It is a sad comment on our society today isn't it?
I just want you all to know that she loves Dr. Pete - and I am sure once she gets home - she will have plenty of time to get to know him and have some good talks! :D :D

If she is still in hospital this Saturday, I will go and visit her again and hopefully she will be feeling better. Unfortunately, I can't go during the week because the hospitals are fairly strict about visiting hours, and for me to get there on a work day, I likely wouldn't arrive until after 7pm (traffic is a nightmare; on Saturday it took me over an hour to get there). At least if I go on a Saturday, I can plan to visit with her for a while.
When I was there, her neighbour Betty took Pete home, as they had just been warned about a thief on the ward and the nurses had advised to leave nothing in the rooms. Hopefully after Slick has made it home I can go visit her there and show her all of the neat stuff Dr. Pete came with! :D
If I know anything, I will let you know.

I’m so glad to hear Slick has been moved to a private room - although it doesn’t sound all that private. However, it must have been wonderful to have a bath, and a yummy meal. :) Does this mean she’s got the chest tube out?
I hope she’ll be able to sleep well and the pain will go away. Now, we just need to hear some good test results.
I can’t believe that anyone would steal from a hospital - what a sad world! :( Ok, here we do need to keep valuables in a closed cupboard, but it’s in the room at least.

Morning update, I'm at work so can't make it as detailed and long as previous from here but will say we both smiled and smiled and she sounded delightful. Of course the meds she had just taken 20 minutes earlier were just starting to "kick in" ;) Another bad night but after a one-on-one with her own Dr they are going to try a different pain drug. It sounds like gavapan or gavatrin or something like that. She couldn't remember. She was restless about 5 a.m. and reach for a box of goodies Naomi has brought filled with cards and letters and read over each one again - it was like opening it the first time because she doesn't remember the first time  :D She did say that it didn't seem fair, even though she is now benefiting from it, that the more you pay for a room the better the food. After a tired, cold little fish flavored stick thing with chopped green stuff called veggies for one of the first meals YUK!!! A sandwich on a croisant (sp?) was heaven. Still the tube draining fluids but as long as the pain stops she doesn't really care how long it takes before the tube is removed. I gave her Cheryls (E The Spoiled) suggestion about speaking with the nursing supervisor about the meds, not the regular nurses and Dr. She's going to do it. More later but shouldn't really be doing this at work. Don't tell anyone ;)

Some years ago my Mum was involved in a bad road accident and was in hospital for a long time. Poor soul practically had to be re-assembled and was drugged up to the eyeballs for weeks. My husband said it was great visiting her, because you could tell her all the same stuff all time time - she didn't remember hearing it before. :D

Thanks for the update Laurie. {hug}
Hi everyone, I talked to Slick between 5 - 6 this evening. She had just received some pain medication so she was in rare form!
As Laurie told you, she had a bad night - and at 5 AM she was wide awake so got up and started organizing things. The only thing I could think of to say was "OMG, you didn't clean the room did you?" It would be just like her.
No, she got out her box of cards that Naomi had brought and quietly read each one again. She said she was reduced to tears.
Her breakfast was awful - her lunch was good - spaghetti and meat sauce - her Mom ate the chocolate pudding, because Slick doesn't like sweets. She wasn't sure what dinner would bring.
Her Mom came today (in the pouring rain) and spent the afternoon with her.
It takes her mom 45 minutes and two buses each way to get to the hospital. And she is 82. It is very clear that Slick's stamina is genetic!
She cannot have the chest tube removed until Friday at the earliest because it is still draining. If it is removed then - it is possible that she will be able to go home on Saturday or Sunday. She feels once that is removed that her healing will be much more rapid and the pain will diminish considerably.
They did change her medication and she can have it more frequently - so once again, I hope she has a good or better night than last.
Her surgeon's assistant and many resident doctors came to visit her this morning - and all I will share is that they gave her a round of applause. :D :D
She is walking three times a day now - showing off those slippers I bet!!
Noah's Mommy (Kelly) called her this evening and that cheered her up a lot.
All she kept saying to me was "don't worry" = yeah, easy for her to say!!
She did sound the best I have heard her sound though..........so I am very optimistic.
But continued prayers are important - we want her completely healthy and down here cleaning my house for the BBQ - and not some hospital room! :D :D :D (she will kill me for saying this)

Quote directly from Slick:
Day Seven:
Things are looking up, the sun is shining through my window, illuminating the wonderful flowers I have on my windowsill. 7:30 AM I am awoken by Joel. Today I have the pleasure of being looked after by Joel. So far I have been poked by Joel, I have been felt by Joel and my vital signs are being monitored closely, because whenever Joel comes near the numbers skyrocket.
And who is Joel? The most delicious student Dr. you could ever want to meet. Scrubs never looked so good until now.
I am going to request a very special sponge bath today.
More Later
So I get this urgent phone call this morning from her friend, Betty. She said that Slick called her and asked her to call me and ask me to phone her after 10AM.
So, I called............and the above is her direct quote. Do you all think she might be getting better??? Her boss came in to visit her so our phone call was cut short. (it's a good thing - Lord only knows what she would have shared next!! )

Wow! I am so happy to hear that Slick is obviously feeling a lot better. Tell her we want to hear about delicious Dr. Joel. Maybe she can con him into a pic, too. I hope she gets that very special sponge bath. I'm so glad she's feeling better.

Slick sez:
So far I have been poked by Joel,
I have been felt by Joel,
and my vital signs are being monitored closely,
because whenever Joel comes near the numbers skyrocket.
And who is Joel?
The most delicious student Dr. you could ever want to meet.
Scrubs never looked so good until now.
I am going to request a very special sponge bath today.

This "Get Well Soon" thread could soon turn into an X-Rated Thriller!!
Wonder if Dr. Joel travels with a Nurse / Body Guard escort?
Bet Dr. J had to use COLD WATER for that sponge bath! http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/eek.gif

Someone is obviously feeling better!! Now, don't be extending your stay at the hospital just because Joel is so wonderful. Find out if he makes house calls. So happy that you're on the mend. Fingers crossed that the chest tube comes out today.

Lotta Good Thoughts on here being forgotten.
We'll keep it *bumped* up so Slick can find it when she gets HOME! :D
Aw, Phred, you are right. I was just so anxious to let everyone know that she can go home tomorrow - and I wanted them to be sure to see it.
I hope people continue to post here too!

Hey MOM (aka Gini) ...
Do we know the Time of Release for Miz Slick?
And HOW's she gettin HOME ?
* with Friend Betty playing Chauffeur ?
* or maybe Joel's gonna do the honors ?
* or da Bus ?
* or a Taxi ?
* ride her Bike ?
Hope she'n not planing to  *walk*!
Last tyme *I* was in the Whitecoat's Hangout ... they screwed around for
6 hours
before everyone "signed off" and wrote their discharge instructions.
THEN they wanted me to *wait* for a "Wheelchair Transport Driver" to show up
to haul my butt to the front door!
My Guy Nurse asked if I wanted to go NOW? .... I said RIGHT Now!
He gave me a choice - Long walk to and from the elevators ...
OR we duck down the stairs and wind up in the lobby ...
Seemed more like a Jail Break - but we skipped down the stairs as I phoned Pat & Joan to
pull the get-a-way car up to the doors - THEY'd been waiting for over an hour!
I pictured my Wheelchair Driver wandering the Fifth Floor ...Phred, Phred,
has anyone seen a Phred?"
Happie Homecoming, Slick!!
RedHedd
09-23-2006, 07:59 PM
LOL Phred! You had me cracking up - waiting for everyone to sign off and then having to wait for the wheelchair patrol can take hours! I'll never forget being released close to 9:00 p.m. after my mastectomy surgery because it took all day for everyone to sign off who had to sign off. I was ready for bed!
Welcome home Slick! YAY! I'll post in the other thread too :D
Well, Mr. Phred, I usually wait until after 7 PM to call her. Don't want her to miss out on her FABULOUS last hospital dinner, now do we? I think they serve it at about 6:15 - and my computer says 6:14 PM.
I know some good friends are picking her up - they have been looking after her cat (Max) too.
More after I talk to her.
Well, it must be true - that she is going home - they came to take away the television while we were on the phone - and the guy was kind enough to give her an extra half hour on the phone.
She is scheduled to be released at 10:00 AM and hopes to actually leave the hospital by 11:00 AM. She will see her surgeon for one last time in the morning at the hospital. Her friends will pick her up and help her carry her plants and goodies to the car. A friend dropped by this afternoon and had made her a large container of homemade chicken soup. Isn't that a thoughtful thing to do - she can have that for supper tomorrow night.
Her last fabulous meal at the hospital was lentel soup and a plate of beef ravioli. Dessert was a half a canned pear. (she doesn't like sweets).
She really is feeling better but still in some pain. The Dr. told her it would be about a month before that completely went away.
Look for a post from her tomorrow night sometime from her HOME BASE!
It has been a long way from there to here - but this is now behind her.
Let the fun begin! :D :D

Isn't that wonderful! A little more than 3 hours to go - Home, sweet home!! It will be SO good sleeping in her own bed. :)
Nice of her friend to bring a container of chicken soup, that will come in handy, although I know she has a "few" things in her freezer - as organised as ever. LOL!
I hope the pain will lessen rapidly and Max will cuddle her to sleep tonight.
Happy homecoming! :D :D :D
Can't wait to see her own post! .... but take your time, Slick!

Time to start *Packin Up* for the Great Escape!
Don't forget to take all the plastic "stuff" they put in your room - the
"Stuff" they WON'T clean & reuse - just toss it with the trash between patients.
(I'd watched "Housekeeping" (a slightly misnamed group of slackers and
dirt repositioners) "clean up" after a roomie moved out ...
and questioned why "All that Good Stuff was getting trashed?"
Answer: "It's been *contaminated* by a patient.") http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/rolleyes.gif
I had quite a bag-full at checkout:
* the flimsy plastic "wash basin" - I wound up with 2 I never knew I had -
hidden in my chest-of-drawers table
* the bag of Tooth Sponges - lil plastic sponges on a stick - imitation tooth brushes
* tubes of "tooth paste" - glue-like substance to use with tooth sponge
* lil jugs of "hair shampoo" - that never raised one bubble of lather
* lil jugs of "body lotion" - watery but it DID work
* boxes of tissues - musta got a new one every other day - quite a pile
* hand soap bars - yep - new one every day in the bathroom with the towels
* hospital-issue Slipper-Socks - wiffa non-skid rubber bars onna bottom - 2 pairs
* Hair nets (2) - souvenirs from MRA & Cath labs - Ted E. Bear started wearin em
* annnnd - the ever-popular tiny plastic Emesis Basin - 2 no less
I didn't *swipe* any towels - they weren't Monogrammed. http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/frown.gif
Well, Happie Packing - as Mom always said - "Open ALL the drawers a second time
to double-check you haven't forgotten anything!"
SAFE Trip - We'll <see> ya at Home! http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/smile.gif

Ya, I hope you got a lot of "Plastic silver ware and napkins that included the Mrs Dash), and all those large plastic bags with the draw strings too.
Slick, I hope your pain lessens with every new day at home. The main thing is that you catch up with your rest. Dr. Pete and Max will be there for you.
Take your time in posting on Pet Talk , We can wait as long as it takes .
Glad to hear that you are Coming HOME!!!!!

Ahhh getting home from the hospital is so nice. All your familiar things and animals, of course! :D

I'm home safe and sound and Max and Dr. Pete are here with me. I left with an empty fridge and I came home to a full one....a casserole from my neighbour, a ton of homemade chicken soup from a friend and a bunch of salad fixins from my catsitters.
I need a nap right now and later one I'll read this whole thread and respond to any questions...expecially about Dr. Joel. ;) :D :D

I can go to bed happy now! Hey, I've had a very tiring holiday, while you have been lying in that hospital doing nothing! :p Oooooo, I think she might get me for that one! :p :D
The hospital staff are scratching their heads - WHO cleaned up this hospital room? Did you? NO! - Well, did you? NO!
Good heavens, do you mean the patient did it before she left?
Seriously dear friend, snuggle for a nice nap with Max and get to know Dr. Pete - he arrived with lots of love attached to him.
