*Sigh* Poor Penny is unwell again, it seems she has more bad days than good lately :(. Saturday morning we woke to find diarrhea and blood all over the bathroom floor, so she was rushed off to the vets and they could find nothing majorly wrong with her (Hello blood), gave her a shot of painkiller and 2 lots of anti biotics to take, said to fast her for 24 hours but encourage drinking.

Saturday night i was out and got home early Sunday morning, Mum got up when i got home and said Penny had started to vomit over night. The vomiting has stopped but there is still blood present. And her eye with the cataract has been very weepy and swollen this afternoon. So it is off to the vets again tomorrow first thing in the morning.

Please keep our little dog in your thoughts.

Thanks everyone :). Penny seemed to perk up a bit this evening and had a couple of good big drinks, so i am happy about that. She even ate a little bit of boiled chicken and rice.

Thanks again for keeping her in your thoughts, i will keep you updated.

Please seek a second opinion for your dog? Anytime your dog is passing blood from either end it needs to be looked at and possibly X-Rays. I will pray for the recovery of your sweetie.

There are two possibilities you should seek to eliminate.

The first is to have your Vet stick a scope down into the stomach to check for possible ulcers. If one is found then treating with zantac or prilosec will help the healing. Not to mention avoiding any feeding of bones.

The second primary cause of blood in the vomit is the beginning of liver failure and/or disease. If caused by something like Salmonella contaminated meat, then the antibiotics should help-assuming they don't irritate an ulcerated stomach. Cephalexin has such a habit, where as Baytril is usually mild on the tummy. A liver blood profile should be taken, and if enzymes are elevated and the antibiotics are not clearing up the problem then you might want to have an ultrasound performed.

Well we were back at the vets today and Penny was given 2 more shots of 2 more different Antibiotics. They wanted to keep her overnight and take blood in the morning but we would not leave her there, so she will be going back in the morning for tests.

Labmomma we trust our vets and they are very good, 2 different vets have seen her over the last week and we are all concerned that the meds have not worked.. we are doing everything we can to get an answer. Depending on what the blood tests show, Penny will be well taken care of.

Thankyou for your support everyone, it means alot to us {{Hugs}}. I will update tomorrow after we get the test results back.

Updated for those that are interested....

Penny's test results still have not come back :(, we will know in the morning. She had a bit of a rollercoaster ride today, blood taken in the morning..then she came home for a while and went for a small drive.. when we got back home her hind legs collapsed and she was unable to walk.. so we rushed back to the vets and by the time we got there she was able to walk again (Little bugger).

The vet then took more blood and did a quick test which showed nothing, and then he came to the conclusion it was low blood sugar from not eating much in the past week (She has gone from 4.9KG last month to 4.4KGs now). So we are getting her to eat what ever we can, including roast chicken and baby food.. she did eat quite well this evening.

*Sigh* I just want to know what is wrong with her... it is heartbreaking not knowing what is going to happen :(. I just want her to be well again.

Found this photo taken just a couple of months back on holiday.. she had a blast staying by the beach for 10 or so days. The beach is her favourite place ever.

Thankyou for all the lovely thoughts and prayers everyone {{Hugs}}, they mean so much to us.

Update for today (28th of July).....

Test results came back today and Penny's white blood cell count is pretty high, the vets think she is trying to figh an infection. Our poor little dog has lost some movement in her hind left leg aswell, which is a big worry.

Penny has been going in for anti biotic shots the last couple of days, but if there is no improvement by tomorrow they are going to keep her in overnight for IV fluids and more tests :(.

Xrays and ultrasounds are going to be requested tomorrow if she does not pick up.

Thankyou all once again for the support.

We are off to the vets in about 10 minuted for the little ones shots. Penny seems a bit better today and we have been getting as much fluids into her as possible.. she also had a pick at some dry food/ kibble without hooman prompting this afternoon and was able to crunch it up.

It looks like Spring is on the way and it has been sunny and warmer the last couple of days, we spent a good hour outside this afternoon sitting in the sun, Penny loved it and had her little head up towards the sun.

Will update when we get back....

Update (29th July)...

Good news everyone, Penny has improved over the last 12 hours or so and the vet was quite happy for her to spend the weekend at home and vet free (Unless something else happens), IV fluids were not needed as we got quite abit into her over tha last 24 hours :D.

Pen will be on oral anti biotics for the next 5 days and then back for another check up and blood test after that. But for now it looks as though our little dog is going to survive. Thankyou so much for all the thoughts and prayers... PT prayers realy do help.

Bit of an update on Penny...

We ended up back at the vets today Penny may have to have her left eye removed, the vets thinks either Glucoma or possible a growth/ tumor behind her eye. Pen goes back in to the vets in the morning to have her pupils dilated so the vet can look back and see whats happening behind her eye :(.

Good thoughts and vibes would be appreciated thanks.

Thanks for all the good thoughts everyone!!

Penny went back to our vets this morning and stayed for a good hour or so, we got a call about midday saying we had to take her down to Melbourne (about 1 1/2 hours away) for possible emergency surgery... our vet saw what she thought was the lense of Penny's eye torn away so sent us off to an eye specialist ;).

It turned out being a very severe cataract and her body has had a reaction to it and her eye is quite inflamed, we have drops for her long term that need to be givin once a day and we need to call back to the specialist's in about 2 weeks to let them know if the swelling and irritation has lessened any. And to see if her other eye has gotton any worse (Start of another cataract).. if the other eye has worsened then we will organise to have both eyes operated on.

So heres hoping the other eye stays the same and the swelling goes down.... and we can get some weight back on to the little girl ;).

Michelle it is Animal Eye Care , they have a clinic at Weribee every thursday.. i cannot remember what street the other clinic we went to is in ;).

Penny is doing ok, still plodding along, eating/ drinking when prompted etc. She is going back to our vets on Monday and may be started on some different drops as these ones have not kicked in yet.

With a heavy heart we have decided it would be unfair to put Penny through surgery, so at the moment we are keeping her as pain free as possible and she will let us know when it is time.. some people may not like our choice but our little dog is so frail.. the life has gone out of her eyes today :(.

ETA: She will be off to our vets later today to see what else we can do to help her & for more blood work to be done.. i still have hope that she will improve.. we can only hope.

angelchampy nope hey eyes were fine when we were away (holidays), when we got back and during the last time she was sick. Her eyes have only just started to flare up in the last month or so.

The poor little girl has had an off day today, not eating much, sleeping more than usual, heavy breathing :(. She does not appear to be in pain and she is drinking, and will still get up to bark "random things" ;). We will take each day as it comes.

Thanks for all the good thoughts once again everyone {{Hugs}}. Well it has been one heck of a rollercoaster ride in the past 48 hours, the little bugger decided she was hungry last night and actually ate something .. after not eating for quite a while. And tonight when we were eating dinner she got up and came over to beg for human food *tears*.. which resulted in her eating quite a lot of steak.

She is not out of the woods yet and we are trying to not get our hopes up.. but it is a start. We are going to take the dogs away somewhere tomorrow because my guys have not been exercised in the last couple of days as we have been too upset about little miss Penny. In the morning Penny will be going to the vets and we will have a chat to see where to go from here. It still might not be good news but we can hope.

I will keep you all updated.

Thanks again everyone {{Hugs}}. I have been having computer troubles so have not been able to update as often as i would like to.

The day Pen was booked on for ultrasounds etc there were quite a few (Well 4) emergency cases bought into the vets so they were busy saving lives (And trying to save one poor soul).. Pen sat at the vets for 5 hours and we decided to wait and do the scans in a few weeks time as the little 'darling' has picked up so well again.

She actually got a peice of meat stuck in one of her teeth last night and i found a rotton tooth right up the back that had been hiding whilst trying to get the bit of meat out. So we are thinking that has been a problem for a while now..that will be seen to and pulled asap ;).

But she is eating like a pig, drinking well and she walked right around the park Tuesday night after it cooled down a bit :D. She even got an extra burst of energy yesterday and jumped from her 'step ladder' up onto the couch.. she has not been able to do that for a very long time... i am not sure if she looked shocked or proud of herself lol.

Thanks again, and i will keep you updated.
