I got this idea off of dogster.
Molli has been mistaken for a Shih Tzu. I think she looks nothing like a Shih Tzu but ok. Someone stopped me on my walk with her and asked if Molli was a male shih tzu because she was looking for a male to breed her female with.
Sammy has been mistaken for a Springer Spaniel many times. People don't know that Cockers can come in black and white with ticking.
How bout' your dogs?

Autumn is often mistaken for a springer. That's right, a springer with an orange body and a few white spots. The other two people say are a golden retriever mix or a cocker.

Malakai: Giant Lab (all the time!), pointer, greyhound, pit bull, English Mastiff, GOLDEN RETRIEVER!! (Lmao it was only one time but i still cant get over it, last time i checked he was black, not golden! )..Most people have no clue he is a dane..why? "because his ears aint' pointy and he isnt tan with a black face" yes i get told this all the time, ive given up arguing with people about it though, i just smile and walk away. Most people have a set image of what a dane is "supposed" to look like in their ignorent little heads, they are not born with cropped ears and they certainly are not all fawn colored!! ..*sighs* some people
Chloe: she gets called a big beagle and Basset hound..most people around me have NO clue what a treeing walker hound is, and certainly not a red tick..i remember arguing with this lady once, she swore chloe was a basset, oh and she KNEW she had raised beagle for 40 years

"He's a pure bred Dalmatian, right?"

I've been asked if Visa is mixed with these, or is a purebred one of these:
Wolf
Lab
Flatcoat
Border collie
German shepherd
Chow
Collie
most people know Happy is a BC, I just had one person ask if she was a greyhound puppy lol most people justthink she is too skinny cuz of her build, she could be obese and appear underweight lol
Misty, has been mistaken for a pit bull mix(because of her head, the colouring makes it appear rather broad), GSD mix(her smooth coat) and a ACD mix(because a BC cant possably have ears like that! lol) but most of the time is just "look at the pretty little puppy!" ..she's 3 lol thankfully most people are willing to listen when I educate them about smooth coat BCs, but there are certain people that inisist she is a mutt, despite my telling them, she she is from a breeder, I have met the parents and I have papers from the breeder stating that she is a purbred BC lol
Ripley.. everyone tries to guess his breeds, its funny lol everyone knows the schipperkie part, but the bosten terrier, most people either guess as bosten terrier or french bulldog(because his ears are rounded) but both is breeds are pretty clear, the schip is just obvious to anyone, the bosten is obvious by the way he stands.
Perky..well WE dont even know for sure what she is lol we have had guesses from everything from borderjack to corgi mix, but a LOT of people think she is a border collie! some kids who saw her doing freestyle thought she was the dog they had to give up, but when my mom sent pics to the kids mom, it turnes out their dog was a border collie, I posted her pics on a BC board and people thought she was my 3rd BC lol and my friends little sister was like "well you have 3 BCs!" somedays I wonder is she is part BC lol at the same time we sent pics of her too the president of the JRTA who detremined she was a dencent quality pure bred JRT.
Blair is a mutt or a terrier, 99% of the most dog savvy people on earth have never heard of a pyrshep so thats to be expected lol

Perky looks like a good quality purebred jack to me too. You may not be used to seeing them in b+w but what if you turned the black into brown. Everybody would know what she is then.

I guess I shlould shame Rusty the amazing felon (purebred dobie) as well as his fursis, I have had a lot of ppl ask if he is a hound mix of some type(he has natural ears and is a red) and if he is a vizla cross
Everyone recognizes that mine are poodles, but I had to smile the other day when I had a workman in my home. He saw Bella and said "I see you have a full size poodle." That sort of reminded me of a car - full sized, compact, sporty.... :D I guess Ripley must be a compact model. :p

Sherman: sometimes people seem surprised to learn his is a siberian, I'm not sure what they thought he was. His color throughs them off, I guess.

Nebo: alaskan malamute, alaskan husky, greenland dog, eskimo dog...any nordic breed, you name it, he's been called it. He's very often called a german shepherd or an akita. I had a guy in petsmart who swore up and down that Nebo was an akita, he knew because he bred akitas...yeah ok. I think he gets wolf (and sometimes coyote) more often than any other. When people do guess siberian husky they often question me that he is purebred. Apparently huskies are only supposed to be gray and white.
Reggie and Sydney: scottie, I swear people think any small dog with a terrier look with a beard is a scottie. I've heard other strange guesses but I can't think of any at the moment.
Perky looks like a good quality purebred jack to me too. You may not be used to seeing them in b+w but what if you turned the black into brown. Everybody would know what she is then.
oh I agree, she does indeed LOOK like a pure bred JRT, we question it based on her behaviour, she does not have one single behavourial trait that fits that of a terrier, her behaviour is the complete opposite of a terriers.
Terriers:
love to sniff out vermin
no problem getting dirty
extreme energy, no off switch
like to fight
feisty
indepentent
Perky:
is trustworthy with my gerbils and afriad of my rabbit
will not set foot in anything wet or dirty
energentic considering her age, but not even a fraction of a terriers energy, she is more then happy to sleep the day away
no interest in fighting, only fights if the other dog started it
not the least bit feisty
extremly clingy, she has not a shred of indepence

Since we have mixes there is really no telling what they are (although we know Sadie's mom was purebred Dalmatian, and her father was believed to be the same owner's purebred black lab)
Some of what we've heard as part of their mix:
Sadie (Lab/Dal):
Great Dane
Coonhound
Cincy(Lab/? we think maybe beagle):
Pit Bull
Rottie
Bassett Hound
Spot (Dalmatian/? Lab):
Pointer
Years ago I was walking across the street with my Chihuahua and this little girl says "look at that funny looking cat". This happened so long ago and I still remember it so well.

Autumn got mistaken for a cocker at the dog park last night. Some kid started saying that "that's the breed that will attack you if you look it in the eyes" and I quickly said that she's not a cocker. He was surprised she wasn't because her tail is docked. This is the reaction I always hear for cockers, and we've never had an aggressive cocker. All of our girls have been laid back.

Nanook is a mix and even I am not 100% certain of his breeds but he's been mistaken for all of the following:
lab and lab mix
samoyed
purebred husy or purebred malamute
part wolf
part poodle
and just about any purebred or combination of any nordic breed
Raustyk has only been mistaken a few times, most of them by children:
pit
dobe
Kaige gets mistaken often:
husky (thats the most common, purebred and mixed, almost everyone thinks that)
spaniel mix
border collie mix
plain old mutt

Many people actually recognize Micki, Mini and Kyra as Jack Russells  Its amazing. We get a lot of people that call them Eddie, or Wishbone dogs. There have been times that Micki is called an Italian Greyhound, Mini a Beagle and Kyra a chihuahua, though. Heck, even we think it's true sometimes too ;)
People usually think that Jack is a Lab puppy, they're usually surprised to learn he's a year and a half old ;) Other people ask what hes mixed with and they always have to disagree with me when I say that our best guess is Beagle.
The majority of people recognize that Shadow is a Rottie. I can only think of one time we were getting Ice Cream and a lady came up to us and asked us what she was mixed with, that there was no way she could be purebred.

My Maggie is a beagle mixed with some unknown hound. Because she isn't very small, she is taller and thinner then the picture perfect beagle and she doesn't have any white like the majority of beagles, people have thought she was a small coon hound type.
Sara is a collie/english shepherd mix. She is bi-black. Everyone who meets her thinks she is a pure-breed border collie. However, she has the long nose and square butt of the collie, not the border. And she gets the color and shorter coat from the english shepherd.
Then there is Bucky who we are waiting to place in a rescue group. I believe he is at the very least part doberman, perhaps full. From the crappy pictures I have posted, I have gotten comments from australian shepherd, lab, to dob. From around the neighborhood, people think he is a pit puppy. He doesn't have the large head or broad shoulders that the pits have. But there are so many in this area, I guess it is natural to assume.

T.j gets mistaken for dalmation mix all the time, maybe because of his ticking, and he is always called a longhaired dalmation.
Zoey gets mistaken for a lab mix, sometimes a golden retriever mix. She has also been called a black setter, becuase of her feathering on her tail.

Dalmatian
Dalmatian Cross
Blue Heeler
Pitbull
Rottweiler

Some things people have said...

"So he's a Great Dane crossed with what?"
Only a few people have guessed that he's a Great Dane. I get Blue Heeler and Dalmatian the most.

Gonzo rarely is mistaken. Lots of people do say "he must be part Border Collie..." like I don't know my dog is a BC! :p It annoys me most when people act like they know more than I do about my boy, and they know he must be mixed. When he is not, he just isn't "pretty".
Fozzie gets an incredible number of guesses! I never truly appreciated how annoying it can be to have a mutt ^_^ neverrr. And most people are sure of their guesses... "He is a purebred Corgi, right?" "He must have some Basset in him! :p" "Is that a Basenji?"... wth! "Is that a miniature Husky?" yes, of COURSE he's a mini Husky! My favorite, which I get every time I go to Petsmart or whatever, as I'm walking this 9-inch tall little munchkin dog, "Ooh, what a pretty Malamute/Samoyed." :D It can be entertaining, but after all of the Malamute comments - even from people who are supposedly experienced with breeds, such as Petsmart groomers - it can get annoying. Sometimes, I just want to scream "WTH! Malamutes weigh well over 75 lbs, have thick fur, are NOT tri-colored, and do NOT have blue eyes!!!" ughha. But I usually just smile and say, "Mmhm. Maybe."

Ethan hasn't really been mistaken for anything. People can't even think of a breed that he looks like, so they just don't try.

With my blue tri beagle, the guesses tend to be pretty accurate, with people sometimes mistaking her for a basset.
With my lemon and white beagle, I get all kinds of fun stuff. I get the same line some other people have mentioned here "That breed doesn't come in that color!" Even though he has excellent conformation for a pet/field beagle, people refuse to believe that's what he is. They usually guess JRT. I have also heard corgi mix, 'puggle', Golden retriever or yellow lab mix (I guess those are the only yellow/gold colored dogs they can think of, because there's no other resemblance) and baby pit bull (from people who apparently have never seen real pit bull vs. small hound heads before).
With my fiancee's mystery mutt, the most common guesses are corgi (and she is colored just like one) and pom (she's got a somewhat pom-ish head, but the body is nowhere close) and chihuahua (I don't see any resemblance). Hard to laugh at those guesses too much, though, since all we can do is guess, too.

My blue merle Border Collies have been called Aussies.
My white Toy Poodle is always called a Bichon.
My tri colored, Border some people say German Shepherd
Bear is a Border Collie/Chow Chow cross. I've been asked if he's part wolf! I think he's also been thought to be a pomeranian? I don't really get that one!
Zoe is an Eskie/husky mix...I think. A lady asked me if she was a jack russell terrier.

Murph mostly gets Westie. He's a very light cream color and as he'd aged, he's gotten more whiteish. Since Westies are the white version of Cairns, it tiz a very understandable mistake.
Oz gets shaved Rough Collie, quite a bit. Most people recognize that he looks like a Collie, but the short hair really throws'em, since they've never heard of Smoothies.
Gull mostly gets Aussie mix, since he's a Blue Merle. People think of Collies as Sable like Lassie and with never hearing of Smooth Collies, they automatically make the leap to mixed breed.

Most people recognize Bitsy as being a pom and Nacey as being a pug (usually mistaken for a male pug, but a pug nonetheless).
People often ask if Buster is a chihuahua and if Charlie is a min pin. Most people get their breeds right, they just question it.
When it comes to Nova and Jake I ususally get asked "What kind of dog is that?" We don't know what either are.
I usually call Nova a mini-mutt or a dachshund mix. I have no idea what she is, all I know is she is a terrier at heart.
I call Jake a basenji mix. I really don't know what he is though. I do see a lot of basenji in him. I also see pit bull in him. Someone once called him a bull terrier (they were probably thinking pit bull terrier and misspoke).

Ok, Sassy has been mistaken for a Westie, Bichon, Shih Tzu, Poodle, Cairn Terrier, Corgi( ), Chi, a purebred JRT, Poodle mix, JRTxWestie mix, ect. There are so many things she's been mistaken for. Since when are JRT's pure white and furry like Sassy? A majority of people call her a poodle though. Lmao animalrescue-'Maggie's Puppy'. :) Although I really feel bad for people with Manchester Terriers...I'm sure they are always explaining that no, it's not a min pin, or a mini dobie, or a deformed dachshund. :)
My shepherd got called a wolf, Sam my akita/lab/?? got called a bear, and Boomer my husky/bc/akita?? got called a fox. LOL, by 12 year old kids. My shepherd gets wolf a lot though.
I had someone at the dog park yesterday swear up and down that Zoie was NOT a whippet. When I attempted to explain why we think she is a whippet cross, the lady yelled at me and told me she is not, that she is an english pointer cross. I asked if she meant GSP, and she said no, definately english pointer. Yes mmhmm this is all english pointer. ;)

Well, Cochise is an aussie.
So far I have heard "mixed with what???, Aussie's are only black and white" That was about my favorite so far.
I have also heard dalmatian, catahoula leopard dog, sheltie (he's already too big for that), husky, and border collie.
I have to say that I wish if people didn't know what he was they would just politely guess rather than make silly comments such as the one up above, or "Aussie's don't come in that color" or "well he's a funny looking Aussie."
