Now that you have reported on the evacuation of American citizens from the Mid East, could you have made it any easier for some wacko to put a missle into the ships going to their rescue?
Pictures of the ships, names and schedules of the whole operation....
Great Work!
------------------------------------
The Orient Queen - which can carry 876 passengers - had been on a cruise of the eastern Mediterranean with 400 people aboard, mostly Lebanese. It was supposed to have returned to Beirut three days ago but was unable to do so because of the Israeli blockade, a U.S. official in Beirut said. While it was in Cyprus, it was chartered by the U.S. to evacuate Americans.
Speaking to Pentagon reporters from Bahrain, Walsh said there were no plans yet to put U.S. Marines ashore in Beirut for security.
The 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, conducting exercises in the Red Sea, was ordered into the waters off Lebanon to help with the evacuation. U.S. ships expected in the area include the amphibious assault ships USS Iwo Jima, USS Nashville and USS Whidbey Island.
The ships, part of a five-vessel Navy unit, carry a battalion of Marines with a helicopter squadron. The ships also have hospital facilities.
European nations also intensified their evacuation effort, moving thousands out of harm's way.
· Britain's HMS Gloucester departed with 180 people on board, the vast majority of them British. Another Royal Navy warship, York, was offshore.
Up to 3,000 Britons want to be evacuated, said British Ambassador James Watt. He called Tuesday's departures "an experiment," adding that there will be more and in bigger numbers in coming days, using navy and chartered ships.
· A Greek navy frigate steamed out of Beirut harbor with about 400 Greeks, Cypriots and other Europeans aboard.
Associated Press writers Pauline Jelinek in Washington, and George Psyllides and Patrick Quinn in Cyprus contributed to this report.

Freaking morons.
I thought the same thing Richard. It reminds me of some of the stories in the news where bombs have been used and they tell how they are made (materials, etc.)

Richard, while the media has a responsibility to safeguard information, and should never publish this type of info, I'm wondering one thing.......
Who in the H#LL is the PAO (public affairs officer) who released this, and why has he/she not been relieved?
Reminds me of the US Troops being met on the beach in Somalia by news reporters. OPSEC? Nah, who needs it?

You can't help but wonder what they are thinking! Over reporting is such a problem... It always gets my goat how they show the power plants and places and point out what a easy target they would be... or on TV how they tell the luggage isn't screened good enough at the airports and how they tell how easy it is to get on the internet and find how to make bombs???? WHAT are they THINKING?

They don't think of anything but ratings!!!
We could probably have been in and out of Iraq a long time ago if the news media had shut up!!!
I don't need to see them riding in tanks or in this current war plopping down on both sides of the border watching for incoming missles. One of these days, some of them will get themselves killed on "live" tv. Maybe then, they will keep the reporters out of the way.

I agree. They have no place being in a war zone. leave that to the Soldiers. they are nothing but a liability. I said this a long time ago. The media is a powerhouse against their own country. I don't know if they realize it or if they just don't care but they are doing more damage then most people think.

I agree. The press should be allowed to print NOTHING but what the government tells them it is okay to print.
Better yet...the press should be shut down completely! Let the government do its job of telling what we need to know. Like in other civilized and progressive countries....like China and North Korea.
OMG......and Richard and Edwina's Secretary are going to be together at my home this weekend for a BBQ.
It won't be dull!! :D

When a war is involved (and there is), the media should have enough common sense to keep their yaps shut about certain things, at least until the danger is over for those involved. At the very least report it without showing it and giving locations away when it could be dangerous for those there.

Edwina always so bitter.
Why do you think it is ok for the media to add to the danger our soldiers are already facing? We know your stance on the administration but this isn't about that. You keep changing the subject to the government but thats not what this is about. This is about the media reporting sensitive information. Why do you think that is OK?
Frankly your attitude scares me. Seems you don't care too much about the soldiers. Seems all you care about is getting a jab in at the administration and if that hurts the country as a whole then so be it. Please tell me that isn't how you really feel.

I'd wait until they get all the bitter Americans out of Lebanon, A place that was suggested NOT to be a hangout for any U.S citizen.....
Sheesh,
Do the words Marine Barracks or USS Cole mean anything?
LH,
I do remember the look on the faces of the men on the beach that evening in Somalia.
I thought......Hmmm, 50 points for a reporter, 30 for a cameraman and 15 for the producer.
Let them print what they will.....Should they hammer a ship or chopper, the newscrews have a field day with that...

Well congratulations. I'm not sure what this has to do with the thread but Sara and I have crossed paths in here before and snide comments are what we do ;) this isn't a "bout" Her being "establish member of PT" does not make her opinion more valid than mine.

Lighten up, the reference to a "bout" and standing in someones corner was my feeble attempt to make a joke about the imaginary "ring" being set up in Gini's back yard for the BBQ. You know "in this cawnah... weighing in at....." Well, forget the weigh-in :p Richard would win that one hands down :D

I care about the integrity of the constitution. I think the job of the media is to keep the public informed..... period....end of subject. That is why a free press was included in the constitution. I don't like censorship. Apparently some do.
And if you think my attitude is scary...you ought to see me in person. I am even more scary.... :D :D

Are you the only one who can go "off topic" to deliver personal comments?
Sara is never bitter but is so often right on target with good old common
sense comments on many issues that others make quite complicated with
twisted logic.
I haven't commented on Richard's original comments because they deserve
none. Rixhard can spout off any opinions he holds..
I have had heated discussions with Sara at times too but we somehow manage to remain friends. I figure if Mary Matalin can live with James Carville (GAG!). I can tolerate Sara in small doses. LOL! :p I do think there is a reason why some things should remain *classified information.* Apparently the press does not. I object to people being put in harm's way because of careless reporting for the sake of ratings.

So does that mean I can't come and live with you Pam?????? :p :p
The press has agreed to not publish some information during this Iraq situation and after the bombing in NYC and Washington.
To me the issue is WHO gets to decide what is classified and what is not.
The intention of the constitution is a balance of power....and the press to keep the government in check.
I like that idea.
I don't watch tv news as I think it tries to tell stories in too short of burst....ratings and all that. Not enough in depth.

In that case
LADIES AND GENTLEMAN. LET'S GET READY TO RUUUUUUUMMMMMMMMMBLE
You can't have a boxing match without THAT. Hey do you think we could get the real guy?
Lizbud. we are all friends here. Edwina and I have a way with each other. I'm sarcastic, she's sarcastic. it is an unwritten unspoken agreement. :D Not to mention I gave an opinion in this thread before giving a rebuttal.
Edwina I do not believe in censorship either (in most cases, there are some things no one should be subject to seeing but thats another story) However I don't think that keeping some details to themselves is censorship. We don't need to know the names of the ships that are out there and how many men they have one them and where they are at this moment and where there destination is. All they need to say is, a rescue mission has been organized. or something like that lol. Some details should be kept hush hush.
We don't get coverage on plans the police are making to catch a serial killer. why should this be any different?
EDIT: One more thing to add. My husband made a good point earlier. The internet has changed our lives especially regarding media. NOW, news is old within 36 hours. Before the internet news was news for a long time. There wasn't constant coverage. Perhaps THAT is what makes this seem more extreme. when something happens we find out about it immediately. We don't have to wait. And with that increased amount of news flow of course things are going to look worse.

Before we go on with the subject...
I have to say that PT is one of the neatest places to post things.
We can all agree to disagree, but we all get a chance to voice our opinions.
===================
One of the most delightful people that I have met on PT is the one with opinions that are directly opposite of mine.
She has invited me into her home and made me feel like I was a welcome guest.
(I know she sprayed Lysol on the seat where I sat, after I left...) :D
Kidding... :p
Actions do speak louder than words.....

People who defend freedom are a varied bunch.
Some carry rifles, ride tanks or fly planes.
Some clutch a document 230 years old, to their breast, and use that as their

I admire them both.
We can do it both ways because we are in a special place.
I really pray that one day we can resort to hitting people in the head with a rolled up dream, instead of dropping bombs.

Wow,
LOL,
I heard that phosphorus was being used in bombs being dropped in Lebanon....But no mention of the sky rockets being tossed into Israel by the Hezbullies....
You know, the missles packed with the ball bearings....
And the reports from Kofi Anan about the UN personnel that were killed by the Israeli bomb..
I barely heard about the 'blog' that the Canadian soldier kept....
He reported that the bombs were "danger close' but did say that they were being dropped for 'tactical' reasons.....
nuff said.
