View Full Version : Kitty whiskers needed!

I know this is going to sound strange, but I'm in need of kitty whiskers.....no, I don't want you plucking them from your babies  but if you happen to see one on the floor, or chair, could you please start saving them for me?!

Here is the reason, so you don't think I am completely nuts  :

I work with clay, and this fall I am in charge of a local No-kill shelter's annual fund raiser (HOW I got hooked into this is another long story... ) I thought it would be unique to auction off a pot that was done in a technique where you singe horse hair to the pot, but instead of horse hair, it would be kitty whiskers. BUT.....this would take a whole LOT of kitty whiskers.

So I'm asking you, if you would the next time you see one, put it in an envelope, wait until you get a bunch, and then please mail them to me.

For my address, please PM me.

I will take pictures of the finised project, and hopefully it will go for big $$$ for the shelter - the main reason for doing this!.

Thank you, and start saving!!! :D :D :D

The nutty one! I think the 113 degrees weather is burning my brain up

I have a collection of whiskers you may gladly have. It will give you a fine start. PM me your address please.

(by the way, I started this whisker collection thanks to slick and a few other PT'ers who said that THEY collected cat whiskers.) ;)

I have been collecting them too but I really don't have very many.... don't want to part with them at this time but maybe by the time you are ready to do the project......?

Do you have a photo of what the technique looks like? (with the horse hair, I would presume) I think I might have seen it once, but can't remember.

I just mailed you my first batch of 20 or more and I just found another one this evening so I'll continue to save some more of them for you.:) When is the latest that we can mail them to you?

Thank you Jen & Tracey! Laura's Babies, I don't want them if you don't want to part with them! :)

I do have a picture of the horsehair pots, but I have to figure out how to get them in my imagestation, again! I'm not computer savy, that is why I don't post many pictures, so I will work on it.

I do not need them instantly, for this project I have to open and remove the pot from a 1400 degree kiln  not someting you want to do during our summers! So I will do the project when it gets cooler.

Pictures to come.........hopefully!

I am very interested in the process too. If you need help getting the photos posted on imagestation, let me know.

I have a zip-lock bag with a couple (mostly from Halo). I'll keep saving them up. There won't be many, but every bit helps.

I've just checked and most of mine are white so I hope they will do. There are too many to count. Can you please PM me your address and I'll get them out next week. :)

you know, in the world of stones with healing purposes and good luck charms (healing stones and medicine bags, good luck charms and purifying herbs is what my mom deals with in her business), cat whiskers are reportedly very good luck and very good calmer-downers...when they're not on the cat of course, so please don't rip them off...just thought you guys should know that :D

ps...how goes the project, so far, anyways?

I only have one at the moment.....I'd never thought to save them until you asked but I will start looking for them now.

A while ago, my kitty, Neko, jumped up in my lap, shook her head and dropped a whisker and then jumped away to go play some more. Guess she knew it was going to fall out and just wanted to share that moment with me! :p

By the way, how many whiskers (or hairs) does one use in a project like this? Do you use them individually, or do you need an entire group to make one marking?

I have whiskers from each cat in a medicine bag, but I only need one from each. I'll save some up for you! (With fosters, I can accumulate a LOT of whiskers! )

I started saving whiskers after the last whisker thread. I had quite a few.... and ya know what? They got stolen  Seriously, they were in my little jewelry box and they took the whiskers along with all my jewelry :( I'm a little sad thining they took Flutter's baby whiskers :(

YES!! Thank you Lisa for helping me out (once again!) Yes, the cats in the picture are made with horse hair. Kitty whiskers will look different, because they are not as long as a horse's hair.

How many will it take? Good question, since I have never done a "kitty-whisker" pot. We just might be starting a new trend here!

I'm not quite sure  sorry. I do know that when I did this with horse hair I used about a handful of hair, and spread it out over the pot.

Since whiskers are a lot smaller than a strand of hair, I'm going to predict that I will need quite a bit more.

This is my first attempt at doing this with whiskers, so it is a learning process for me as well.

Since the techinque "singes" the hair on to the pot, the color of the whisker does not matter (it didn't matter what color the horse's hair was either).

I am PM-ing you now. Thank you!! :D

   Why on earth would someone steal whiskers???!!!

Don't worry about it Kim, although I do hope they catch whoever did this, and you can recover some of your possesions. IMO I personally think you were watched the day you left and they knew the house was empty

I'm SO happy that you guys are helping me out with this project! If I had to rely on my 3, this project would take forever

I don't know how you guys do it.....I'm lucky if I find 1 whisker every once in a while, and I am looking hard for them!! :D

Thank you, thank you, thank you.................. :D

With all my cats I should find some.I'll look.My husband does the vaccuming around here...I'll tell him to look before he does it again and i'll be looking now and then :) I'd be happy to.I'll PM you when I get them for your address.

Catnapper...I'm so sorry your for jewelry getting stolen. That's terrible.I hate theives as much as I hate Murderers.I know it sounds crazy...But It really bothers me to think people can steel from others and feel they are still as good as the next Joe.Whiskers though? That's weird.
I've been robbed before also.Broken into while at work.Stole everything years ago.A horrible feeling.
I've had friends(not friends any more) steel little tiny things from my house...And I cannot understand it for the life of me.They think that you don't know too. That's more of a disease.

Ok, our weather has finally cooled down enough for me to work over a 1600 degree kiln!!

****Anyone out there with whiskers, please I need them now!!****

Please PM me for my address, I will take as many as you can spare! :)

I've been busy with the upcoming shelter Cat/Art show, they now made me in charge of alerting the media along with finding other artists - - oh man, this is going to be fun.....NOT! For days now I've had all the phone #'s of the local TV stations on the desk all I have to do is call them, but I've chickened out every day!! I so do not want to do this!!!!!

Any way, thanks in advance for your USED whiskers - Please do not pull them from your kitty!!! :) :)
