I've noticed that Nebo has been chewing/licking at the base of his tail on and off for the past week. I've looked but didn't see anything previously but today I did. His skin was quite red and there's some scabs/flakes. One particular spot its quite scabby the fur is all stuck in the scab like it was probably oozy at one point but dry when I looked at it. It's on both sides of his rear end near his tail base. From what I have read and seen I think it is hot spots though he's never previously had them. The chewing/licking of that area started about the same time we got back from our trip as well as when I started giving him raw eggs in his food every other day (possible allergy?). I'm not sure what exactly caused it I think the likely bet is either insect bites (the biting flies and mosquitos were HORRIBLE while we were camping and they mainly went after the dogs hind ends) or moisture from swimming or a combination of both. He is a siberian husky so he has a dense coat which takes a long time to fully dry. His skin and coat look perfectly fine every where else no dandruff at all.

I had some Allercaine spray at home which the bottle says "soothes hot spots and insect bites, reduces pain and itching, helps prevent infection, controls scratching and spot chewing." I sprayed that on him earlier and already it looks better. The scabs and flakes are still there but the skin does not look nearly as red and I haven't seen him biting at the area. I'm going to call the vet tomorrow and talk to them but if I can't get in soon do you think the following would be a good way to treat it?

Shave the area with the scabs (I'm a dog groomer so I know what I'm doing...not happy about having to shave any of his fur though :( ), give him a good bath with oatmeal and aloe vera shampoo making sure he gets very dry and continue spraying the area daily with allercaine?

Thanks for your help, I feel so bad for my Bebo boy!! :(

I'd personally shave the spot or atleast take him to the vets and have them look at it.

The best thing for a hot spot is to keep it dry.

Thanks for the reply, Kay. At least one person on PT loves him. ;)

I took him to the vet about an hour ago I mostly wanted to confirm that it was indeed a hot spot as I haven't personally had a dog with one before. She said that it was and it looked like it was almost healed up. I told her the stuff (Allercaine) that I had been using and she said that was fine to continue using that. She said just the one spot needed to be shaved the others were just a few scabs that were almost off. She would have shaved the spot for me but I asked if it was okay if I did it instead as Nebo is a big chicken at the vet and he would have mostly likely not cooperated for her too well. She said that was fine so I stopped at my work on the way home and shaved the spot. So now poor Nebo boy has a bald spot but it looks better already I hope it will all clear up soon.

She gave him a routine exam as well and said he looked great, good teeth, perfect weight, normal temperature, etc. so I'm happy for that.

Hey Bee Butt,

So, got a "naked" spot now ?? :D

I hope your hot spots get better really soon.

Amy, how many spots does he have? What did the vet reckon about how he got them??

I know my Mum's dog gets hot spots in summer from new grass shoots ..... and she uses some natural stuff on him to get rid of them. He gets them on his belly normally because he love to lie like a "flat checken" on the grass - you know tummy flat on the lawn :D

{{{hugs}} to you Nebo ....

He had one main "spot" (the shaved area) and some very small scabby areas on both sides of his tail. She said it was probably from the moisture getting trapped in his coat after swimming which is what I thought. Next time he swims I'm going to try to dry him off better, its just hard with such a dense coat.
