Well, first off, Welcome to PT! I'm Makayla and I have 3 beloved dogs.
Be sure to check out the dogs on Petfinder (http://www.petfinder.com). There are a lot of wonderful dogs there that would suite your family. A Staffordshire Bull Terrier would be great, they don't exceed 40 pounds and are awesome with kids if they're raised right. A small pit bull is also good, if you have time to socialize and train them, because they need to be under control at all times. If they aren't socialized enough, they can become a monster. Shelties are great dogs and awesome with kids, but they do require some grooming or their fur will get matted. Australian Cattle Dogs don't get too big and are great with kids, but they are high in energy. A lab would be perfect, but they exceed 40 pounds by great amounts. Jack Russels are great dogs, but VERY high in energy.
I wouldn't suggest a Corgi because I have read they're quite snappy and not so great with children. My dad's friend has one and he's not very friendly with kids at all.
Here are some dogs I found on Petfinder (http://www.petfinder.com):

This is Mini.... She is a 4-5 month old JRT X sheltie. She is tan and white with the softest coat ever (like silk) She has typical pup energy but not as bad as a full blood JRT. She was given to a 89 year old man who needless to say couldn't deal with a pup. She is super smart and learns fast. She is up for adoption if anyone is interested, she comes with travel crate, dog house, 2 leashes a collar and tons of toys. She will be taller than a JRT by a little, quite muscular! Looks like a miniature American Staffordshire For more information contact Hotdogs Foster Homes
