Another adoption related gripe. :( There's this guy I adopted a kitten to about 3 weeks ago. Well, both the adoption fee and neuter deposit checks bounced. I have not been able to reach him on the phone (constantly busy or out of service.) Then my brain finally got in gear and a stray memory popped out that I couldn't reach him the day of the adoption because...the phone was busy! The bounced checks and busy phone are consistent with someone who's in debt up to his eyeballs and is being dunned by collectors.

I am considering repossessing the kitten, as he is in breach of contract. If he can't pay the adoption fees, he can't afford the kitten...PERIOD!

Smokey the Elder,

Sounds like a repo situation to me. If he can't afford his bills, how in the hell can he afford a kitten and all that goes with it (vet bills, tests, vaccinations, etc.) if he's up to his @$$ in debt.

Another volunteer who has done repo before is going with me. Hopefully nothing bad has happened to the kitten.

Any update on the kitten? Were you able to get her/him back alright?

Why do people think animals are free to take care of? Fools.

The guy got nasty and threatened to call the police. We are in contact with animal control and our lawyer as to what to do next. The guy acted surprised that the checks bounced. He said he'd bring cash to adoption day on Saturday.

We need more folks of the male persuasion in our rescue group.

I don't understand why he got nasty. Besides, um, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't passing a bad check AGAINST THE LAW!!!! If he doesn't bring the money in by the weekend, I'd definitely get the police involved.

This is why we're contacting our lawyer. The bad check angle and the threat of pressing charges may get him to relinquish the kitten.

I would keep trying to run that check through the bank, who knows, you might catch it when there is money in there. The very least is everytime you try to run it through and it bounces, there is another fee attached to that account.. I'd just keep trying and trying and trying and trying until the bank said I couldn't do it anymore.

Laura's Babies,

Unfortunately, a bank will only allow you to redeposit a check twice. I'm glad they've decided to check with their lawyer. Here's hoping he relinquishes the kitten and does no harm to her.

Uppydate: the guy actually showed up with the cash, and apologized for being such a jerk. He's still on the do not adopt list, though.

It is good that he came in person and apologized.

It is also good that he is still on the do-not-adopt list. ^_-
