Milly laid an egg last night, the first one since Bennie left us 1 1/2 years ago!!!! She is sitting on it faithfully, and when she isn't, Roger is. I don't know if I have the heart to take it away from her. :(
If I knew I could have good homes for any potential babies, I would let them hatch. My husband will shoot me, otherwise! :p
Any Pettalkers in the southeast who would want a baby, perhaps???

Not again Milly!
I'm sure you know this, but if you take it away she will lay another one. Doing this repeatedly will deplete her calcium too much.
That's what the books say.
When I had Alex it wasn't the case and I didn't know any better to leave it in there. They are all different; just thought I'd give you a heads up.

I wonder if my parents would want a bird...send me a pm, Logan, and, tell me about the type of bird. I haven't a clue, but, I've always liked birds. I'll ask my parents and tell them the situation. They're in Columbia, of course. :)

We have two eggs now. I can't decide if they are really interested since I put some bedding in there in a Cool Whip container and placed both eggs inside. Milly about chewed my hand off when I went to move the eggs, so she definitely is thinking they are the real thing, even if they aren't fertilized.
Kari, I'll send you a PM all about Cockatiels tomorrow. Milly has abandoned many eggs in the past and she might do the same thing this time, but if they are fertile and she sticks with it, I think I'm going to let them hatch (much to Scott's dismay).
Oh Amber, where are you??? I think Bennie might need a sibling!!!!! ;)

oh logan, I'd love love to have a cocktiel again. I am missing two, harlan and tweety my siblings and I had for over 9 years. and I still have my bird cage I have had from a finch I rescued about a year ago so, I meant to have another one!
but I know I'm not really near you.. :( (DRATS). oh well, I hope at least someone (a pet talker!) will take in for us.
curious anyway, how did you transported bennie to his furever home?

HI Gina. I just sent you a PM before I saw your question.
Amber (CamCamPup) and her family were visiting relatives in Tennessee, so we met halfway. I only had to go like an hour from here, so it worked out perfectly. And Kayla and Bailey, the other two, moved to Tennessee as well and I met their "mom" in NC, so it was halfway for both of us, too.
As I said in my PM to you, I don't even know where you are located these days, but if Milly hatches these babies, we can work something out. I only want them to go to people who really love them and I would definitely trust you. You just have to promise to keep those kitties away! LOL!!

LOL, well, guess you'll have to meet my one magical ark to say for yourself! :p they have dealt with (opened-tank) fishes, rats, mice and bunnies alone before. they would just care less as too many rescuefurs and hooman guests kept coming in and out. ;)
well, I have one (former) feral cat, star who would only think bird's a food but I don't think she would dare to eat, I mean even chase it, she seems to understand when it is suppose to be food from being an outdoor and indoor cat. and definitely, never without my supervisor. she's too sweet anyway.
I PMd you back where I am. let's see if finn's mom's parents would take in first.
good luck logan, and keep us posted, I'm anxious to hear! you gotta love growth progresses. :D

Kari, it was you!!! :o I'm so sorry. I hope to be able to contact you tomorrow. I swear, it might be easier if I can call you. Can you send me a number by PM? Tomorrow is going to be a wild day for me since we are leaving on vacation on Saturday for a week.
I will be in touch, regardless, I promise.

If these eggs are fertile, we might be in trouble!
We have 7 eggs now and she and Roger are faithfully sitting on them. She has been laying for almost two weeks now. I wish she would STOP!!!!!!! If they are going to hatch, the first should happen about 9 days from now.
I'll keep you posted!

I'm copying this from a message to Ash on another thread. Thought it might help with Kari's questions...
OK, Ash, as of this afternoon, we now have 8 eggs, layed over the last two weeks..........I'm starting to get scared!
I am no expert, although we have had Roger since Helen's 11th Birthday (January 29, 2002) and Milly was adopted shortly after that.
Roger was a young baby when we got him from a pet store. He "bonded" with Helen, immediately in the pet store, walking right up her arm and sitting on her shoulder while she walked around the store. I had to go back and get him for her. Milly came later, actually when I had gone to buy a stand for Roger's cage, and saw her up for adoption at the pet store. It took a couple of days, but I couldn't stand it and went back and got her (her owner had gone into a nursing home and her son didn't want the bird).
Anyway, they love attention and Roger is quite talkative. He probably learned more when it was just him. He has some phrases that he says and some specific tunes that he whistles. He mostly flirts with Milly. We have two cages, but they stay together most of the time now.
Many people recommend feeding them pellets, which are more healthy. Mine hate pellets, but I've tried to add some to their diet anyway. They do cockatiel seed and also fresh lettuce, kale, boiled eggs (with some shell broken into it) and sometimes fresh fruit.
Birds are messy, though, so you need to be able to be diligent about dusting, allowing them to bathe (helps reduce the dust a lot), and changing out the paper in the cage often. They poop, like all birds, but there are great products to clean that (the one I use is called "Poop Off"). Mine love to be outside of their cages, so usually, I keep their wings clipped. I have my avian vet do this as I don't have the nerve to do it myself, but most people can do it themselves. In my experience, it needs to be done about every six months. Mine LOVE to fly, but the more freedom they get, the more mess they make! They are great chewers and can make a mess of wires and paper if not monitored properly.
They love company. Mine love music, too. I hate that I have them isolated in one room, but with our cats and dogs, I have to do that. But we are in there a lot and I also take them outside in their cage on nice days when I can watch them and they get showered and enjoy "talking" with their wild bird cousins.
Does this help? I don't mind driving to Atlanta! LOL!!!!! You buy the cage, I'll give you a baby or two. You might contact Amber (CamCamPup) by PM, too, as she has Bennie, from our last clutch (two years ago) and she can give you some insight. I will not be able to handfeed the babies, but Roger and Milly did a terrific job last time, and I'm sure they will this time, too. I'm just hoping that we don't get 8 babies!

I will copy and paste your information, Logan, into an email for my mother. I mentioned it to her today. She is going to talk to my dad and then if you need a home for one or two of the babies, let me know, and, she can make the decision from that point. She's not going to put too much into it, though, without knowing for sure if you're even going to need a home. ;) Eight eggs, WOW!
WOW! i can't believe i've missed this thread until now! 8 eggs is a lot! i miss my tiel, Lucy. :(

Wow, now there's 8!!! :D
Now you've got me all anxious for baby bird pictures, I've never really seen a good picture of a baby tiel.
My friend invited me to come down to South Carolina with her sometime this summer, now there is really a reason to go! I mean, with 8 birds looking for homes, who could pass up that chance? ;) :p Hehe, and my mother won't even let me within 10 feet of a petstore if I have any cash on me...I wonder what she would do if I came home from vacation with a bird... ;)
Anyhoo, good luck with everything. Hopefully Milly and Roger will also realize that eight is enough!

You know Logan, Milton passed away last week and Bessie is getting lonely. I'm planning on adopting a cockatiel soon. It crossed my mind that you might have babies soon. I think South Carolina to Chicago IL is a bit far though :). Plus I think Bessie might need a friend a little sooner than your babies would be ready.
what's the update?!?! we are waiting for little baby bird pics! :D

So far, no babies. Yesterday, the first one should have hatched, but I "listened" as Popcornbird instructed me to the last time we went through this and I couldn't hear anything. So far today, I don't hear anything either. But remember, she laid 8 eggs over a 2 week period, so anything is possible. I never candled the eggs to see if they were fertile :o so I have no idea.
I'll keep you posted. There are 7 eggs in there. They kicked one out last week that was cracked (and it was not a fertile egg).

OK, I have a question I'm dying to know the answer to:
How can Milly, with her tiny bottom, sit on that many eggs? Even if Roger sat too, their little bums would not cover all the eggs. Inquiring, if somewhat addled, mind wants to know. :D
I can't believe it. I just saw this thread.
Oh my, Logan! Even 7 eggs is a pretty big family!
I will be anxious for the updates - for your sake and Roger and Millie's too!
Logan
07-17-2006, 10:39 AM
Somehow, those birds just know how to fluff up, pull those eggs underneath them, and cover them all, MOFF. They just know. It is amazing.
No babies, but they are still sitting. I imagine that these eggs are not fertile. I never checked. Wish now that I had. But they are diligent about it, so I'll leave them alone. Many of them have still not been there 21 days.

I don't think we will have any babies this time around, which is ok by me. They are still sitting on them, but the first should have hatched a week ago. Of course, she layed eggs for two weeks, so some might still be viable, but I sort of doubt it at this point. I just feel badly for Roger and Milly who have worked so hard, sitting on those eggs. :(

The eggs have been abandoned for more than 24 hours. I'm pulling the box tonight. I don't think these eggs were fertilzed at all as I have not caught Roger and Milly mating in recent months. It is for the best. I'm sorry for those of you who might have been able to adopt one of our babies, but I'm glad I'm not having to worry about 7 babies and having to handfeed.

I think she does, Diana. I'm going to go, this afternoon, and buy a shade for that room so that we can darken it earlier in the evening and as much as I hate to do it, I think I am also going to put Roger in a different cage for a while, to see if it slows her down some. I might even resort to covering her cage at night. This can't be good for her little body to be producing so many eggs.

Its nice that you might want some baby birds around but...
When a bird keeps laying eggs its actualy can put stress on them because they keep wanting babies and it can actualy reduce its life span.
It could even cause problems if its not layed right one time it has happned to many people and a few days ago it even happned to a girls pet lovebird it layed one egg wrong and it cracked inside the bird giving it bloody poops and sadley it passed away.
The best thing to do is dont take away the eggs but instead boil them so they dont go bad or put dummy eggs in the nest because it seems the more eggs you take away the more eggs she shall lay and sadly reduce her life span.
If you realy want to breed them you also have to know how to tube feed them excacly or it can lead to a fast death for the babies or you can also learn to spoon feed.
Does your bird know how to take care of babies?
If they hatch shall you know how to feed them and do you have a heater?
If yes Im shur they shall get homes from what I read and hopefuly it shall all go well.
my goodness Milly! good luck Logan!

Roger and Milly had a successful clutch last year (last year, right Logan?) Milly is a good mommy. Also, Logan left the other eggs in for 20 days until the nest was abandoned. She's doing it right, but I'm sure she thanks you for your help. I bet you know a lot more about birds then we do :)

Yes, Diana, it was two summers ago that we had the 3 babies.
I am fairly familiar with all the ins and outs of hatching baby Cockatiels and no, Argranade, I am not a breeder, nor do I want to be, but if they have babies it won't be the end of the world. Thank you for your advice, but I'm pretty familiar with all of this after about 5 dozen eggs over the last 2 1/2 years or so.
She is paying no attention to this egg, yet.
