Do you brush your dogs teeth?

Do you brush your dogs teeth? If so what do you use? What kind of toothpaste or brush and where did you get it? Would a human sterilized toothbrush be okay?

I brush them. The toothbrush doesn't really matter, although ones made speficially for dogs are often angled so as to reach their back teeth easier. Don't use human toothpaste however. They sell dog toothpaste that are flavored so the dogs enjoy it. Human toothpaste isn't meant to be consumed, and you can't make a dog spit it out ;). So definitely use toothpaste that is made for dogs. I brush my pups' teeth once a week and they also get chews to help keep them clean.

I don't need to - they eat raw food and the bones clean their teeth :)

I don't use toothpaste. I know toothpaste isn't good for them. Lol it would be funny to try and get Snuggles to spit it out! Right now I am using an old human brush. She isn't really liking getting her teeth brushed right now. I have seen doggie toothpast in the stores. We got her some chews (not greenies) and she threw them up. I am glad that she threw them up instead of keeping them down. We got a free greenie sample and she liked it with no side effects. I want us to get more but they are expensive! :eek:

I haven't recently, but I really need to start up again because Molli's teeth are pretty bad for such a young dog. I haven't brushed Sammy's yet. I use VET enzadent for Molli. We use a special doggy tooth brush... I don't know what brand. We got it at the vet's office.

You can use doggy tooth paste which comes in different flavors. We have poultry flavored. Your dog can swallow dog toothpaste, and it isn't bad for them. :)

Rarely. Their teeth aren't really dirty at all but I do brush them occasionally just to get whatever is on them, off. I used to brush them weekly, but was finding it just a waste of my time as there wasn't anything on them.

Once in a great while if I remember. Their teeth are all pretty good though.

yes, about weekly with the teeth cleaning pads. They worked better than a toothbrush. Even so he STILL has to go to the vet soon to be sedated and get the plaque and tartar scraped off. :( Just another reason I'm looking into switching foods.

My dogs just started eating raw a few weeks ago, but I still regularly brush their teeth and their tongues. ;) They get it does weekly, if not twice weekly.

We had to with Pepper, she had horrible teeth. But I got lucky with Autumn, her's are near perfect. She had a little tartar starting on two teeth, but a few hours chewing on a soup bone took care of that nicely.

Yes, I'm actually a bit obsessive about his teeth, I probably check them once a day or more. :o I usually brush them 2-3 times a week. Smokey had really nasty teeth, Reggie had really nasty teeth (he only has 3 now because the rest had to be pulled) and I'm soooooooo not letting Nebo get like that. Plus I don't like stinky doggy breath. :p The brand of toothpaste I have is Four Paws Pet Dental, it has a sweet smell I don't care for the poultry/beef/etc. smells ew.

He's 4 years old with no tartar on his teeth...a bit of staining in the back but that's all, I've seen 6 month old dogs with dirtier teeth. He actually likes having his teeth brushed, if he sees the toothbrush he comes right up and wants it done and he wants to lick the toothbrush afterwards.

Sometimes I think it has to do with the breed. Mouth shape or type of bite maybe? I hardley ever see a golden retriever or husky with bad teeth but I rarely see a cocker spaniel with clean teeth.

I only brush their teeth like every other time I give them a bath, and I give them a bath like... every month.

Nope, never. I've always feed raw meat & bones at least often enough to keep their teath clean even if I wasn't feeding it as meals. My dad was a butcher when I was younger. ;)

Most smaller dogs tend to have teeth problems. Also, Cockers just tend to have more health problems over all. :(

Nope they are all RAW fed so the bones do all the work for me ;). Clover's teeth are starting to show their age though, just by wearing down :(. Penny need to go and get hers professionally cleaned soon, the bones just arn't working for her enough.

Jenny eats lots of treats to help ( BreathBusters, Dentabones, ect. ) and she has nice teeth , so i have never bothered. :o
