I'm back from my trip to Ks. Charlie went to a boarding Kennel. I felt like I was giving him up when I put him in there :( I almost cried. Then I told myself I will be back to pick him up and I wasn't abandoning him.

The whole trip I was worried about him being scared. I watched Lady and the Tramp, and there was a scene where all the doggies were crying. That made me think of Charlie.

My whole trip all I could think about was getting home to Charlie. I miss him. I haven't had him all that long, but I'd be lost with out him. I didn't really know what an impact he has already had on me till now. I get to pick him up tomorrow(monday) I sure do hope he isn't traumatized.

Next time, I hope I can bring him with me. Do med size dogs do well on 9 hour drives?

And also.. how do you situate them? meaning... I have a carseat in the middle of the back seat.. Do I put the seat on the side instead and have him sit in back? Last time he rode in front, and he turned my car off lol.

ooo I can't wait to get him tomorrow :D

Charlie... Charlie...Charlie..!!!!

Don't feel guilty. I'm sure you have chosen the best kennel there is around your area and if you could you would take Charlie with you anyway. Like most people I can't always take Snowy with me when I am away. I am grateful when a friend take care Snowy for me whilst I'm away but when it is not possible I do put her in a kennel. I think of it as Snowy staying in a doggie hotel, not a doggie prison. I know the staff there are taking a good care of Snowy.

When you do take Charlie for a long drive, make sure you take breaks for yourself and also Charlie :)

((UPDATE))

I'm back. He was soooo happy to see me.

His elbows are red and he's got a spot on his foot. He keeps licking them.

Is this from stress or did he pick up some kind of skin thing from there?

Poor baby!

The red on the elbows may be from laying on a hard floor.. they are like calluses.

I bet Charlie was just estatic when you picked him up! :D

He's put himself in his crate. It's got pillows in there. He never goes in there by himself if no one is in there. I think he now knows it's his safe place. Plus it's soft and probably feels good right now. :D

Oh, your thread just broke my heart. I know exactly how you feel. That's why my vacations are places I can bring Fenway. I don't want to board him because I know I would miss him to death and vice versa. If I can't bring him, I usually ask my sister to babysit him. I went to Boston for 2 nights and all I could think of was Fenway. I called my sister every night and asked how he was.

I'm so glad you & Charlie are back home, together again. I'm sure he missed you a bunch just like you missed him. In regards to a 9 hour drive...as long as you take potty breaks and food breaks I don't think it'll be a problem. Even a walk break. May take more than 9 hours with all those breaks though. The longest Fenway has driven is 4-5 hours. He just sleeps and then we stop as rest stops and he drinks and walks and poops. He doesn't really eat. He has a "cubby" in the backseat. He usually just hangs out in that. But also, he is only 20 pounds so it may just be physically easier to travel with him as opposed to a bigger dog? Not sure.

:)
