Today we were at a very reliable petstore (owned by two people who have been in the fish business and all for 40+ years) getting some rat food, when my mum and the owner got talking. The newest petstore in town (not the one we were at), has a grooming bussiness, and from the sound of it, they will probably be shut down soon.
The owner of the petstore we were at was telling us about a man who came in and told him a story about the groomer at the new petstore.
He said that he had taken his two AKC registered shelties in for a grooming, and went to pick them up later that day. An employee went into the back, and only brought back one dog. Of course, the man who owned the dogs asks where his other dog is at. The employee tried to tell him that he only brought one dog in! The owner of the dogs got upset (as would I) and threatened to call the police and all, then he got mad and started looking for the other dog himself, then called the cops like he said he would. They got some animal control in the back of the grooming bussiness to investigate. They found the dog in a black garbage bag.. dead. :( They said that the death was either caused by an overdose of the sedative, or they missed the vein (or hit the wrong vein). Yes, I know accidents happen, but they didn't have to act like the guy hadn't brought the dog in in the first place! So, the owner of the dogs, files a lawsuit. And the petstore didn't even fire that groomer. About a month later, someone from a nearby town brought their dog there to get groomed, and the exact same thing happens to her dog! So that groomer killed two dogs in a matter of only months. No one from the petstore showed up for court, so they got a large fine, and thats not the end of it.
I knew that groomer wasn't great the first time I met her. Less than a year ago, we had taken Ethan to her to get his nails clipped. It was back when he was so terrified of getting his nails clipped that he would poo' out off fright. Well, he poo'ed all over the groomer's carpet and then got some on the groomer. The groomer seemed so put out to have to deal with a dog like Ethan. And she told me and my sister to clean it up, and I didn't mind, except for the fact that she was being a real b*tch(excuse my language) about it. If she didn't want to deal with a few dogs that give her a tough time, why even become a groomer? And, groomers have the option to tell the dogs owner that their dog is too aggressive or they just don't want to groom them. When we were leaving that day, she told us that our dog had problems and that we will never be able to clip his nails without a sedative. Of course, we never went back to her. I never trust anyone except a vet to use any kind of shot on my dogs. Think, she might have killed our dog somehow if we would have let her use a sedative on Ethan!
Well, like I said, she told us that Ethan would never be able to get his nails clipped without a sedative... she was wrong. Today, we still have to take him to the vet to get his nails clipped, but he doesn't have to be sedated, nor does he even have to wear a muzzle anymore!
The owner of the reliable petstore we go to, also had a customer that told them about their bad bussiness they recieved from the petstore that has the bad grooming. They said that they had bought $150 of saltwater fish, and expected the people at that petstore to tell them the correct info. Well, they told them wrong info, and all those fish died.
Needless to say, we're boycotting that petstore. All the fish I've bought from them (my 2 goldfish, 3-4 of my bettas, and my cichlid) are healthy, but I'd rather buy from the reliable petstore, and I wish I would have been all along. They can tell us exactly where the fish come from (they order them from CA, and keep them in their care for 2+ weeks so they can make sure they don't have any illnesses.)... I asked the people from the other petstore where their fish came from, and no one could tell me a definate answer!

I just can't believe that the groomer is even still in bussiness! Though I doubt she will be for long.
Sorry for sorta ranting... I needed to get it out and tell someone. :)

Geez, good thing you don't take Ethan there anymore! Sounds like they should be majorly sued for damages and then shutdown for good!

OMG that's horrible. You should try and put out some kind of warning to the public. I don't know how you would do that but it's worth a try to save another dog's life.

Ohmygosh. The sheltie. The sheltie. You DON'T DO THAT to a sheltie. Or ANY LIVING CREATURE for that matter. -fumes- A man is blessed with owning shelties, and one is killed by the IGNORANCE of a groomer who DOESN'T DO HER JOB. My apologies for all of the caps, but this grommer lady REALLY pushed the wrong button.

And poor Ethan could have been next!!! Thank God he wasn't. I don't know what I would do if I heard that someone in the Pet Talk community had had their dog killed by an overdose of a sedative by a STUPID "groomer!"

Good God this makes me sick. And it had to be a sheltie too. (I'm...slightly biased...) I can't help but think of Carly. Everyone, just give your dogs a big hug and thank God that you still have them.

I am at a loss for words. :( :( Absolutly horrible. I feel awful for the poor owner of that sheltie, and the sheltie itself. I'm so glad nothing awful happened to Ethan... those people need to be shut down for good.

This is so sad. *cries*
I'm trying to imagine what it's like for the owner and the other sheltie to go through this.
There should be a test to see how much a particular dog can take of the sedative; that amount always being adhered to, or it's jail time and a steep fine for the groomer. Zero tolerance!
BTW, does anyone know if groomers get taught about giving medication when they get licensed?

If the lawsuits won't stop them, why hasn't anyone complained to the Better Business Bureau? Filing a complaint with the BBB is a simple process of filling out a form on their website. I've done it. They act VERY swiftly.

thats horrible. thats why at our shop, we dont sedate any of the dogs at all. if a dog needs a sedative, the owner has to get them at the vets', administer them to the dog, then comin in.

there have been rumors that all groomin shops use them, so ive had my fair share of conversations correcting this statement. :D

Have the local news media been notifed? This would be really interesting to them...and would result in a HUGE boycott!

Pardon my ignorancce, but what the heck is a groomer doing administering sedatives in the first place? twould seem to me that that's a DVM's field, not the groomer.

GROOAHAHA!!! I cant believe this! They should totally be shut down! You would think that the owner would have learned the first time this happened!

Today I'll be getting the info to contact the media. I'll most likely write them a letter, and tell them the basic details, then direct them to the man who owns the reliable petstore that told us the info. He can then direct them to the man who owned the two shelties.
I'll do as much as I can, though since I wasn't directly involved in the situation, I won't be able to see how the whole case is going against the groomer. I'll just have to hear it second hand.
I'll update you all if there is any news.

OMG what an iresponsible B***h!

No 1. I think sedation should be left up to vets to do, I dont think a groomers in the place for sedating an animal, I know we will refuse to do certain dogs and we get VERY angry customers for example a man started getting verbally abusive because we refused to do his dog without a sedative and even he couldnt control the dog while he was standing shouting at us

No 2. Sedative should be taken as a last resort, there are many ways to calm down a dog and it might take more time but I think its worth spending time on a nervous dog rather than drugging the poor thing everytime!

No 3. Who the hell does she think she is?! Did she really think she would get away with only giving back one dog?! I would defiantly be doing time If I found out someone did that to my dog especially drugging my dog without permission!

Ugh this has really got to me, I feel sick thinking about how cruel that nasty "thing" could be, I get so upset when I cut a dogs toenail too short and that is very rare when I do! I cant imagine any REAL groomer would be able to just continue after killing a dog. :( :(

WHAT?!! You don't show up for court and all they get was a fine? Here, if you miss a court date they put a warrant out for your arrest.

I can't believe that woman has a job. I can't believe nothing has been done about this. Do you have anything like the "better business bureau" ? where consumers can lodge complaints against companies like that?

Sorry for lack of update, I had no idea this thread was still alive and was about to revive it with an update later this week, but I'll go ahead and give one now.
We tried to contact the media, but they said that since we don't have direct contact with the owner of the shelties, that they aren't going to go into in. I thought you could go ahead and cover a story without having the owner of the shelties, but they told us otherwise. I really hate alot of things down here... when talking to them, it really sounded like they didn't care about the story because it delt with animals. It seems like no one around here has any passion for pets and animals.
I'm not sure where everything stands according to legal stuff and the court, but its obvious the store is shutting down. We drove by and on the windows was "Sale" written very large. We stopped in to see how drastic the sale was, and they had alot of fish marked down to .99 cents... which is a BIG drop in price. Most everything is marked down, like they are trying to get rid of everything. They even sold a ferret, with everything included (a huge cage, carrying cage, toys, leashes, collars, etc.) for $180 when it would normally sell for over $250. I understand now, why they sold us a lovebird for only $35... we bought the lovebird right before we found out about the whole ordeal.
So.. I'm unsure if we have a Better Bussiness Bureau around here... I'm sure we do, but how would we contact them?
