We went to the market today to get dog food :D. Came home with a 5 -6 KG bag of beef hocks, 2 bags of chicken 1/4s, pork soup bones & pork mince, for under $10 . What a bargain.

Tonight i gave the kids some chicken 1/4s, and they had beef bones this morning as we were going to be gone all day.

My babies all had a turkey drumstick.

The pupsters had their first bit of pork and turkey, mixed in with beef, chicken, an egg, goats milk, and a little bit of formula. Their teeth are really coming in now and I'm going to start them on whole pieces soon (in addition to their gruel).

I have lamb shanks thawing for my dogs.

I am so proud, the puppies are having firm stool! LOL.

Also, I watched four more puppies from the same litter for a while. The foster parent agreed to let me feed them raw and said she'd continue them on it if they liked it (which of course they loved it). When they got here they were already started on kibble soaked in milk with some canned food and their poop reaked, plus it was larger and they were pooping more frequently than my puppies. When she came to pick them up I told her about "raw poop" and she was amazed lol.

She's also going to try her dog on raw as soon as I send her some info :D

Sarah it's great to hear the puppies are doing so well and you've converted yet another family to raw (it's the best thing I've ever done for my dogs!)

I know I posted I was buying a 1/2 a side of beef, well I picked it up a couple weeks ago.
I had no idea of how to tell them how to cut it up so of course it's prepared for human consumption (in my terms means lots and lots of hamburger  ). The guy there told me just to let them know next time that I want as little hamburger as possible and they can cut me up big chuncks. He said he also feeds his dog raw and she's still going strong at 16!!!
Anyways I just had to get a couple pictures for you all to see.
You'll love this...

Bon thinks all the yummy food is for him. Notice him trying to get a sniff :p

Yep, she started her dog on it before I could even send her information! She just fed him what she was feeding the puppies (without the puppy formula ;)). She said that after two meals "his stool was just beautiful!" LOL. So I typed up some info on how to start him off and then told her to call me when she's ready for more info ;)

She has 16 cats (14 of them are fosters) ... I wonder what she'll do when I tell her that raw is better for cats too! LOL.

I was without a computer for almost a week. (Dell does NOT follow through with their next day service guarantee like they say they do). I can't remember exactly what they ate for every meal so I'll just start from last night. lol

First here's the pics of the WHOLE beef lung (with attached trachea, heart, liver, splean etc..). This one was one of the smaller ones, weighing in at about 45lbs. Sorry I didn't really get more pics but I was getting sick & tired of cutting. lol
The "hole" in the upper section is the trachea, you can see some intestine next to the trachea and fat (white stuff), the pink middle section is the lung and the dark section at the bottom is the splean. The heart & liver were under the blob of beef stuff.

Here's the litte freezer I got for $35. It actually holds more than you think. It might be short but it's pretty deep. I wasn't even done packing it yet and at this point I had 6 whole chickens, 3-10lb bags of chicken quarters, 4 packs of pork feet, 4 packs of pork neck bones, about 20lbs of pork butt shoulder roast, 50lbs of beef "stuff", 10lbs of ground turkey, 2 big ziplock bags of chicken feet and some misc venison, chicken organs, pork extras in there too. I forgot to take a pic of it after I was done packing it, which ended up being about 25 more pounds of the same items. I also forgot to take picks of the freezer I share with the dogs, half of it is still theirs.
http://nanryk.zoto.com/img/45/dd57b2abf0fa96d92ac92ed86c4c8f95-.jpg

Last night's dinner:

Nanook:
beef lung
quarter of a chicken
2 chicken feet
chicken liver

Raustyk:
beef lung
half a chicken

Kaige:
beef lung
pork butt shoulder roast
chicken neck

Indy:
beef lung
quarter of a chicken

I cut up a whole chicken and it was good size so the quarters were actually bigger than that of a chicken quarter you'd normally find in the store.

I want what you've got! LOL

Believe me, you'd probably want to keep what you got. It is a PAIN cutting it up. It took me about 2-2.5 hours to chop up 2 beef lungs & the extras. I even used super sharp butcher knives that my father gave me and that doesn't even include bagging it, I had help with that part. After cutting up the first section I kind of gave up & cut the second one into BIG pices which I cut up into smaller sections as needed. I totally gave up on the third one & gave it to the dogs whole. lol

I love seeing the photos of everyones freezers and dogs it is great :D. And reading through the last 2 pages reminded me to get food out of the freezer for the dogs lol.

Tonight i will probably be...

Clover & Elvis: Beef mince (Organ meat is minced in with the muscle meat), a pork bone, which had quite a bit of meat on it, Glucosamine/ Flaxseed/ Livamol supplements, and maybe an egg (With shell) or sardines.

Tinny: Beef mince, mushy carrot, cauliflower, sardines or an egg (with shell).

Also i have started a "Tinny's Diet Book" for the little girl, to keep track of her weight etc. She is due for a weigh in before we leave for camping this Friday coming.. heres hoping she has lost a bit of weight.

Today was a bad day for Kai's diet. He lost two pounds after 1 week of swimming, but this week.. I'll be happy if we just break even. He stole a plate of french fries I had left out overnight by accident (bad mom! :o) and got some treats out of a treat box.. ironically it was when I was teaching an obedience class and talking about dogs stealing food at home. :p

Anywho.. today's breakfast was ground turkey, liver and supplements.

Haven't fed dinner yet but they'll be getting tripe, an egg and some turkey.

Nawtee boy Kai :(. Hopefully he hasn't put on much weight Ashley, or if he has that it comes off again soon ;).

The kids ended up having a piece of pork hock earlier, and i have only just given them their dinner (I forgot to feed them ). They had the beef mince, vegie, supps and an egg yummy. Tinny actually ate all her vegies so i was very happy about that.. i think the egg mixed through helped.

Kay how do your kids do with whole fish, did they take to it strait away?. Clover is the only one of mine that will eat fresh fish, but only sardines. El and Tinny wont touch fresh fish at all, it has to be tinned stuff.

Nala is the only one who will tear into a whole fish. Simba and Kiara won't eat it unless the meat is exposed. Simba will eat it like corn on the cob, right off of the skin.

Yesterday, Nala ended up eating the whole trout by herself & Simba ate Nala's portion of the red fish. They did this switch without me, as Simba was not touching his trout, he wanted Nala's red fish, and Nala wanted his trout!

They did not end up finising the red fish - it was a HUGE red fish.

Friday night they all had:
Pork butt roast
egg
beef trachea
beef lung

Saturday for breakfast they each had:
chicken thigh or leg
beef lung

Saturday's dinner:
salmon & mackeral
green beans (normally I won't feed this but I was in a big hurry)
egg
cottage cheese
chicken feet

Sunday's breakfast:
chicken feet

Sunday's dinner:
pork
beef spleen

Tonight's dinner will be:
chicken quarters & some kind of beef organ.

I am out of chicken feet & almost out of beef trachea and life is very busy. I won't be able to pick any more up until the first weekend in October. Needless to say some additional supplements will be added again mostly for Nanook & Raustyk & their joint problems. Mostly just Nupro joint (which I sometimes add anyways but I'll have to add a little more the next couple weeks).

Tonights dinner was...

Clover: Beef mince, lamb mince, mushed vegies, Flaxseed/ Glucosamine/ Livamol supps & some canned sardines and oil. Clover's coat is looking great at the moment, it is nice and glossy. I think it is the Livamol and Flaxseed :D.

Elvis: Lamb mince, mushed vegies, Flaxseed/ Glucosamine/ Livamol supps, a couple of canned sardines.

Tinny: Small ammount of lamb mince, small piece of chicken breast with no skin or fat, 1 sardine and oil, Flaxseed/ Glucosamine/ Livamol supps and her usual truck load of mushed vegies ;).

I've just switched to raw about 4 days ago. I was feeding kibble in the morning and raw at night but my huskies (Thor and Sif) started turning there nose up at the kibble. The question I have is do you wiegh your meat or just estimate it? I've only been feeding chicken one time a day and Thor gets a leg with thiegh attached and Sif gets a Thiegh.(my spelling skills are horrible!) Should I feed them more than that? They always seem to be hungry still but I'm afraid of over feeding them but I don't want them to starve. I just had my 12 year old rat terrier pass away from being to fat. Please Help! Thanks.

Welcome to the world of raw! ;)

I am sure if you research past posts & threads you'll find the info you need (and probably more).

How much do your dogs weigh?
What is they lifestyle like? Are they very active, working dogs, or usually lazy?
What is their metabolsim like? Do they tend to gain weight easily or not?

Based on just what you wrote, haveing 2 hisky's I would guess that they *may* need a little mroe than just a chicken quarter a day.

You're starting off right though. Feeding smaller meals & easily digested meats (chicken).
Once their systems are used to it you want to add in more of a variety and some organ meats as well.

Once I know more about your dogs I may be able to help you out some more. And like I said, check back in previous posts here & on other threads (do a search for raw). You'll find plenty of information as well as quite a few links to other sites that are mighty helpful!

Thank you. I've read alot of the other threads on raw feeding that's what made me want to do it.
As for all your questions: Thor weighs about 45 lbs. and Sif weighs maybe 20-25 lbs. She was really Thin when we got her. When they were on kibble I had them on free feed. She would just sit there and eat until she puked. Thor rationed himself. As for activity level They play and run in the backyard all day(we have 1 acre of fenced in land for them) and we take them for a 2 mile walk every night. As for gaining weight Thor rationed himself and he is about right as far as being the right size or that's what my vet said. Sif is thin, you can see and count all of her ribs although she looks alot better now. we have only had her for 3 weeks now. After everything I've read on raw I will continue feeding them chicken for awhile, at least a month. Thank you for your help! :D

I didn't realize they were that small.

Thor may be allright on approx a chicken quarter sized meal daily, but I would guess he may need just a little bit more. (I would personally feed approx. 1lb a day, if he's quite active I'd feed about 1.5lbs daily).

Sif on the other hand should be eating about double what she should IF she were to be at an ideal weight (personally I'd feed her approx. 1.5lbs daily until she gets some more weight on her, up to 2lbs if she is really active). Once she is of ideal weight you can then slowly start to decrese her meals.
Do you know what her ideal weight should be?

There are caculators out there but I've never used one. lol You'll find links to them in previous threads & posts. Basically you enter the dogs weight & it tells you approx. how much you should be feeding daily.
What I do is start off feeding what I think would be an ok amount (based on research) and keep a close eye on them. If they start to fatten up I feed a little less, if they start to loose weight I feed them a little more.

http://www.raw4dogs.com/calculate.htm

There's a calculator, for husky lover. :) You should feed a skinny dog about 5% of their body weight... which would be 1.5 lbs per day. That's about 1/4 of a Chicken, depending on the size of the Chickens you buy. Don't forget that about 10% of their intake should be organs... but you can just feed them 2 organ meals or whatever per week. Half of the 10% should be liver, as a rule of thumb. I hope your dogs do well with it!

I was in a huge hurry this morning, and I stayed up until like 6 AM D:... so they each got 1/2 lb of frozen Buffalo Farmore. They love that stuff, so whatev.

Nebo *was* going to have the Nature's Variety venison raw tonight, but once again, he turned his nose up at it. Apparently I now have 12 lbs of raw food for Sydney as she's the only one who will eat it!

So he'll be getting Natural Balance/Nature's variety venison formulas mixed (dry) as usual. So much for that....but he's happy and healthy...just strange I guess, I told him most dogs would kill for that dinner but it didn't change his mind. ;)

I was a bad bad bad mommy over the weekend, my crew all had Evo for their meals, or at least most of their meals. Nanook did get a few chicken feet, a trachea & a pigs foot but he did have one meal of kibble & all the other dogs ate kibble for every meal.
You see we are remodeling my kitchen (majorly lol) and there was no room to thaw anything, heck it was even hard to get in the freezer (or even my fridge & freezer for that matter) at most times and find a place to feed the dogs at. Things are getting back in order now though so they will be getting raw again starting tonight.

I am thankful I saved some of their kibble though. I knew I'd be needing it in case someone had to watch the pups for me, if the electric went out, or some other "emergancy" came up.
I don't have any more kibble left and I really hate feeding it but I think I will be picking up another small bag in case something like this happens in the future, especially since winter is on it's way. I hope I don't have to feed it but you never know.

Yesterday was ... interesting.

I thawed out guinea pigs for the Labs (even if they had enjoyed it, I would never do that again :(). They carried it around for about 10 minutes. Buck took his out to the yard, and next thing I know, he's flopping it up in the air like a toy! He's throwing it up in the air, shaking it, and then rolling on it. After laughing my butt off for a while, I decided to cut open the belly. That got Nova to start eating it, but she wasn't crazy about the fur and kept trying to eat around it. I think if there wasn't any fur, she would have eaten it right away. Luka layed by her guinea pig for about 20 minutes while Nova struggled to eat it. Buck left his and started playing in the yard. Him and Luka weren't at all interested. Nova finally finished hers but I had to throw away Buck and Luka's and the extra one in the freezer. Nova ended up throwing it up a few hours later.

Mandy was lucky ... she just got a lamb shank.

Today I've already split a can of mackeral between Buck and Mandy. They also got an egg. I will give Mandy another half can and Buck a can and a half later, and Luka and Nova will get a full can with an egg each.

About the only organs I can find around here are beef liver, beef heart, chicken heart and chicken livers. Of course Roxey can't stand liver of any kind. What kinds of organs are you feeding???
Liver is very important. Are you feeding it thawed? Mandy hates thawed liver, I have to feed it to her frozen. You could also try searing it just for a few seconds. Sometimes I thaw her liver and cut it up into small pieces and then mix it with canned fish, something she can't refuse.

Kidney and spleen are also important. If you can't find them regularly I don't think it's a huge deal but it would be good to go the extra mile to get them every now and then. My dogs just recently had spleen for the first time, and they've been raw fed since January. I can find beef kidney at a local grocery store. You might try talking to your grocers or butchers to order it for you.

The organs I feed regularly are liver, kidney, heart, and gizzards. I'll feed anything else that I can find. I have also fed tripe, spleen, brains (only when still in the animal), and lung.

Breakfast:
Buffalo Farmore (frozen, 1/4 lb)
3 chicken wings

Dinner:
1 can of Sardines
Beef heart/liver/kidney
2 chicken wings

I have a reeeaaaally funny story about Farmore! I went to Western Feed downtown, which is owned by the same people as where I used to work, to buy Farmore because I was nearby. I went and got a bunch of various 1-lb rolls, because they didn't have whole cases of 5 1-lb rolls. He said he couldn't ring up a bunch of single 1-lb rolls, so he told me to go get 2-lb rolls. I got 5 2-lb rolls, and brought them to the counter. He was weighing them and he said, "welll... since they're frozen, this is actually only 5 lbs". Seriously. So he charged me like $10 for 10 lbs of Farmore, which is the cost of 5 lbs. I don't know if he meant to and was joking with me, or if he was actually that slow... I didn't even realize what was going on until I was driving and thinking about it. So I got 5 lbs of free Farmore! chyeaaahhh.

I give all mine raw but give the bones too. As long as the meat is never defrosted in the microwave or cooked in anyway, its totally safe as you know. I use thigh and drumstick quarters. I feed one pound twice a day, plus veggie mixture with raw egg ( and the shell for calcium), yogurt, chicken livers mixtured into a food processor. I love how the coats just gleam! Well, they aren't MY dogs, but when they are here, I treat them like they are.

My daughter often leaves her 2 German Shepards with us, sort of like a vacation for them ~~~ a reprive for me ;)

I was feeding them Inova Senior Plus, but she left them here with "Iams Active Maturity"~~Oh well, let's do it.

So, they each get about a cup of that , PLUS, 1/4 cup of Salmon, for breakfast. And, another cup of Iams at Supper Time. Hexay is the one with mild hip dysplasia, so she gets her suppliment twice a day. Kasha, the black German Sheperd, wants more than 2 cups per day.

I always offer each of them a treat when they come to me when I call them~~~ In the form of "Milk Bone" Senior Dog Bisquits.

I make sure that their dishes are sparkling clean and filled with Fresh Brita ( oh, they are spoiled here) at all times.

I'm a doting Gramma these days  To Dogs!!!

Mandy and Luka got 1 lb green tripe.

Two days ago they had EVO for breakfast with an egg each and a tablespoon of plain yogurt, each had a turkey leg for dinner.

Yesterday both of mine had some sardines and black mackerel with EVO for breakfast. I usually feed the canned fish with the EVO kibble, as I try not to mix any cooked with raw, as they process a bit differently in the system. Just my personal choice. For dinner they had pig's feet and lamb neck.

This morning they had a pound of stew meat each along with 1/4 pound ground pork.

Dinner was three chicken drumsticks each (they usually get two but they were small).

Tomorrow's breakfast is beef tripe with beef heart, dinner will be chicken drumsticks again.

Mine like tripe. You can usually get it from a butcher. Also my butcher takes the scraps from his steaks etc and grinds it and makes raw dog food that he puts in sausage links you just cut open. I saw what he put in there, and its a bunch of stuff left over like intestinal and scrap meat from beef, lamb. No hooves or chemicals like in kibble- this is pure meat scraps, too small for him to sell, and I get it.. At 48 cents a pound.. One penny over what I buy chicken thighs for. and Boy do they love it!!!

I just recently started getting pancreas -- it's awesome. It doesn't have a strong smell but the dogs love it. It's nice and pasty so it's good for mixing powdered supplements into. I recently switched from beef tripe to buffalo tripe as well. The smell of beef tripe never bothered me, but MAN, is buffalo tripe ever STINKY! It's great for the dogs though. Hey Tasha, do you know what form the tripe comes in from Surrey Meat Packers? I wanna make a big order but it would suck to get a big brick of frozen tripe that I'd need to thaw out and seperate myself.

Mum was bad again and forgot to feed them breakfast so the boys got a big lamb tripe dinner tonight. Kaedyn thought it'd be funny to give me a kiss after dinner.. EW. I really don't understand how the dogs could find that appetizing. *barf* :o

Keegan had a chicken quarter yesterday and some beef liver.
A beef oxtail when I got home from work as a "snacky treat".
Today is some pork I think.

I found a 5 pound duck at Aldi's and was positively giddy with delight! I have trouble finding duck or cornish hens. I haven't found cornish hens yet. Which I find weird b/c my grandma used to buy cornish hens all the time when I was younger. So I'm going to thaw the duck soon.

Since I've missed so many days & have limited access I'll just post a short summery of what they have been getting lately & what I have in my freezer for them to eat in the near future.

Whole turkeys (divided into meals of course cause they are big birds)
whole squirrels
venison
beef (including lung, splean, trachea)
whole whiting fish (I think that's their name)
chicken
chicken feet
goose

(I have many organs from the above listed meats too)

and of course the occasional canned fish (salmon, mackeral) and eggs & the like.

I have yet to find beef heart. But my uncle cleaned out his freezer b/c we are getting some pigs butchered this week and gave me pig heart and some various things.
Keegan got an oxtail last nite - which I won't be buying anymore of - I thought it was a good idea for snack but she throws up that little bone. The other nite she puked on my bed! :(
Right now she is working her way thru a cornish game hen. I pulled off a wing and put it in the cat dish and so far neither wants it! I still haven't decided if they are good deals or not. They are about 24 oz a piece and .12 cents an oz which if I figgered correctly - about $1.19 per pound - which is pretty good. I bought some turkeys last week for .89 cents per pound and then find the same thing at Walmart last nite for .68 cents per pound. ahh well. the ones I bought last week were smaller anyway

But we're on a break from training now because I won't have any time during the holiday season to meet with our trainer, so I figured I'd give him another whole bird, and he had no idea what to do with it! Bailey is having a high quality kibble in the morning and raw at night. He was eating 5 pounds of meat per day and lost so much weight. His spine in so visible that you can count every last vertebrae. I am afraid we're killing him, I am scared that he wasn't getting the proper amount of organs/vitamins/minerals/calcium/protein/fat etc. DH says there's no way we can afford to feed him more than 5 pounds a day, so he bought him kibble. Bailey is also losing a ton of hair, his coat is dull and he smells really bad? I am really upset that he has to eat kibble in the morning, but I'd rather he eat that than die from emaciation. He is fed every single day in the afternoon.

This isn't Bailey, I'm too ashamed to take a picture of him. This is exactly what he looks like though. :(

Bon looks wonderful! Bailey had diarrhea for a few days, but other than that he seems healthy. We might need to get a blood panel done if he doesn't gain weight from the kibble. I was thinking that maybe the cold weather made him lose weight since dogs burn more calories. It has been pretty cold here and DH takes him for long (he's gone atleast 2 hours) walks in the mornings (on Saturday and Sunday). I have explained to DH that Danes shouldn't take long walks until they're around 1 year old, but he doesn't listen. Maybe the long walks coupled with the cold weather is too much for him?

We hit the jackpot for Thanksgiving - my mom and my aunt saved out the giblets and the neck of the birds and then my uncle offered me about 10-15 pounds of venison that has been sitting in their freezer for over a year. It's freezer burnt but Keegan didn't care. ;)
So tonite she had turkey giblets and neck and about a pound of venison.
I have a turkey sitting in the fridge to thaw for a day or so and I'm going to cut it up over the weekend. And I have a large beef oxtail and beef tongue thawing out that I got from my other uncle. ;)

Crazy-Cat-Lover, i am so sorry to hear Bailey has been losing weight, i hope the extra kibble will sort things out. Elvis has been getting a cup or so of working dog food/ kibble in the morning to get some weight back on him, he is a skinny boy at the moment aswell.

So breakfast was...

Elvis: VIP chicken and vegies dog roll and a small handful of working dog food.

Clover and Tinny: Small piece of VIP dog roll that Elvie had left over.

Dinner for everyone was chicken mince, couple of pork ribs and a handful of working dog food (We ran out of vegies and everything else was frozen ;) ). Clover also had her supps and meds. E & T had their supps aswell.

It beats out the the fresh deer liver I got the other day that still had grass on it!) and all she did was lick it and whine. I know that they are supposed to eat big but she has always whined if things are too big for her. :eyeroll:
I was cutting up a whole turkey into meals so I offered her some of that and she took that wholeheartedly. And she got some venison also.

We hit the jackpot for Thanksgiving - my mom and my aunt saved out the giblets and the neck of the birds

My mom saved the neck, gizzard, liver, and heart for the dogs. I gave Nebo the neck (supervised). He didn't have a clue what to do with it, he licked it, carried it around the yard and crunched it up a bit but I don't think he actually ate any of it. It just ended up covered in grass and I had to go pick it up (gross). She offered them the rest of the stuff later that night (in the yard), Sydney took off with the gizzard in some far corner of the yard. Nebo acted like he was being offered poison when given the liver and heart. It was pretty funny, he spit it out like a little kid who doesn't like their food. Reggie ate one of the livers, and Nebo ended up eating the other and the heart.......after they were cooked a bit.

This morning I let Nebo out in the yard to potty and when I called him back in he came running all excited with something in his mouth...dirt covered turkey gizzard. He brought it to me and dropped it at my feet. What a nice present! ;)

When I start raw its about 16 weeks, and its chicken wings. At 12 weeks, I use ground turkey, none lean hamburger, ground in a processor with tripe and a veggie with raw egg and either yogurt or cottage cheese.
A puppy you feed at 5 percent of his body weight. You will continue that until a year old, then look at his growth if you need to continue 5 percent. If he weighs 12 pounds, that means roughly about a 1/3 of a pound twice a day. But keep an eye on this in weighing him- I think he is shepherd and collie and he will gain fast in the next two months as you know.

Keegan got 2 pork necks with quite a bit of meat and some chicken gizzards/liver.
After 2 months of raw reading people giving their animals PORK PICNIC I FINALLY over the weekend FOUND IT! I bought 2 and she'll be getting that in a day or so..

.sarah
12-12-2006, 12:20 AM
How big are the picnics? I have to cut a lot of the meat off of the ones I give. I buy whole roasts and have the butcher halve them, then I cut off about 1/2 of the meat. If I feed it all at once my dogs get some really smelly farts. I know a lot of dogs have problems with large amounts of pork, so just a word of caution. :) Seriously, it's not just that it's gas, it's some of the WORST smelling farts ever! So be forewarned! ;)

My guys have been getting mostly turkey and pork picnics. The turkeys were on sale obviously around Thanksgiving and the pork picnics have been a good price for whatever reason so I stocked up. They have also gotten tripe, lamb shanks, and mackeral, but mostly they have gotten turkey and pork since I last posted.

shais_mom
12-12-2006, 12:35 AM
I think they are about 7 pounds each.
Thanks for the warning. :) She has gotten some pork roasts so she is used to pork. I have her on a garlic supplement for fleas and ticks from Springtime Inc and boy has that brought on the rannnnkkk farts and gas. eeeww!
I try to vary her meat - tho I do (unfortunately) feed a lot of chicken it seems like, darn the cheap price! I have lots of pork and deer liver for when I am ready to feed her. I got some freezer burnt deer meat on Thanksgiving my cousin had processed it himself and had cut it up to make jerky out of it but never did. So the meat was cut up into small approximately one inch size pieces. Not ideal, as I don't normally feed her ground unless I wrap her pills in it, but she loved it. But after it had been in the fridge for about a week, and I was like I'm going to HAVE TO use that asap, I stuffed it into her kongs. SHE LOVES IT! She hasn't gotten her kong much since going to raw, and that's great since before EVERY TIME I ate I had to put SOMETHING into her kong to keep her away from my food!
Surprisingly she self -regulates very well. I am quite surprised. It took her almost a week to eat a turkey! About 12 pounds I think. I am not sure how she'll do with the large piece of meat, she doesn't like huge chunks of meat like the raw board recommends. She NEVER has. Since the time she was a puppy she would carry things that were too big around and around and around whining the entire time. I may have to cut the picnic, we'll see I guess. The one thing she hasn't gotten is tripe, and she doesn't get overly excited when I give her fish either. Barely touches it.
I think I have babbled on enough.....

Kay, I started Fozzie on raw shortly after I got him... which was when he was about 9-10 weeks. He definitely took to it right away! I started him on Farmore & chicken and he actually ate everything really well. Chicken quarters might be a little difficult with his milk teeth, but wings/backs/necks are pretty easy for pups. I fed him 50% kibble as well, because I hadn't been feeding Raw for very long, and puppies are a little bit trickier to feed. I'm sure Moo will love it!

Fozzie & Gonzo both got 2 beef ribs today, and some ground lamb. They each had an organ meal for dinner with sardines. Then they got peanut butter & toothpaste stuffed Kongs because sardines give them really disgusting breath. :p

Wow, I can't believe he is loosing that much weight and that fast. He looked great everytime I saw pics of him and 5lbs is a lot of meat even for that large of a dog. I strongly suggest you get him to the vet for complete bloodwork & a fecal sample. It just doesn't seem like it is the food intake to me, seems like there is most likely an underlying cause.

I took a Jenny journal of what she ate today. My gosh, how does such a PIG get so thin??? It's amazing she eats so much, but has a hard time keeping wieght on.

January 1st:

1 1/4 cups Nutro lamb & rice
2 Nutro chops bisquits
1 nutrence performence bisquit
a large frozen bone (of course, she only ate the meat and fat off it. )
Half of a huge 16 CM jumbo rawhide
A handful of chicken chips (while re-enforcing recall)
A few chunks of roast
1 1/2 cups nutro with chunks of roast, fat from roats and meat juice from roast.
2 nutro bisquites
1 chew-eez ( basted rawhide treat thingy)
1 no-name large bisquit

You guessed it, we had roast for supper :D

I took some pics of my boys eating this morning. ;0) They're in Dog General.

They each got 1/2 game hen. Then, they had an organ meal, a hard-boiled egg, and a few whole sardines. Later, they got their teeth brushed, and a greenie, because sardines are disgusting. =P

Keegan ate a turkey thru last week and there was just a wee little bit of it left Friday nite - and since it had some bones etc I fed her half of a deer liver.
THAT STUNK SO BAD!
she loved it tho!
Then she had chicken quarters over the weekend.
Tonight is part of a boneless pork shoulder.

There was a sale on chicken quarters recently - $.29/lb - so we bought over 100 lbs, and they've been getting a lot of that lately. ;) Plus a lot of pork, because there was a sale on that as well.

Today is going to be a little different though, I just took out pork lung, bison liver, and a pork roast for them all to share.

Im confused, I thought it was not good to give dogs raw meat due to salmonella and e-coli. My dog doesnt eat much, he is a big dog but just isnt that keen on food.

I always thought that too -
but all I can say is RESEARCH - RESEARCH - RESEARCH- my golden has been on raw since Sept and LOVES HER FOOD and LOOKS FABULOUS!
She was never one to eat much kibble either. - She could go a day or 2 without eating the kibble. Now the only time she misses a meal is when I fast her. She eats with a relish and LOVES it.
It isn't for the faint of heart. But I am convinced.

Why do you fast your dogs?, I've never heard of doing that.

Why do you fast your dogs?, I've never heard of doing that.
again - to fully understand it you will have to research- research-research. I'm not going to be able to explain to all to you here and now. It is impossible. try www.rawmeatybones.com
Fasting is healthy for people and animals done in moderation - its way harder for people do (ME) b/c it takes willpower and I have very little.
:) The goal of feeding raw is to feed big pieces so the dog can use their teeth and paws if needed. If I feed a large pork shoulder and allow her to eat her fill or if I think she ate too much the day before - she gets fasted. Or if she threw up - that's just what should happen for any dog that gets sick regardless of what its fed.
It is stated that the bacteria and acids in a dog's gut will pretty much take care of any other bacteria. Not to say that it doesn't happen but its rare. And with proper hygeine the person handling meat shouldn't have a problem either.

I think my dog must just not like any food, I have started him on a raw diet but he just isnt interested, whatever food I give him he looks at me as though its a punishment. He seems fit and healthy but it would just be nice to give him some food and watch him really enjoy it.

what did you start out giving him?
did you look at the website I posted? Am I correct in reading somewhere you have only had him for a short time? Does he have any bad teeth that might need pulled? Maybe it hurts for him to eat.

I have had him for 2 months he is 11 months old, he's had a thorough check at the vet and everything is fine with his teeth, the person who had him before me didnt feed him very well I dont think well not often, I think because of this I imagined that he would appreciate being fed well, but it isnt working out that way. As well as the web site you recommended I checked out a few others. I gave hime some chicken to start things off but a few sniffs and he walks off. Maybe I am worrying over nothing has he is full of energy and he looks healthy. As a mother I worry when my kids dont eat well, maybe i am just overthinking it, he seems happy enough, I just think he deserves more than a couple tins of dogs food a day. Thank you for taking an interest with my 'Puppy' (thats his name by the way and he's an alsation)

Very good. Glad you researched. :) Whatever you decided be consistent and be prepared. Raw Chicken was an excellant thing to start with. Also keep in mind not to mix kibble with raw. Sometimes that is why dogs throw up b/c their system can't take the slow to digest kibble vs the quickly digested raw meat. Once I started giving my golden raw - she hasn't had kibble since.

We need to start posting in this thread more often!

Moo just got his first taste of raw chicken, as far as I know. My mom was preparing chicken for the freezer and saved a few scraps for the dogs. Moo thought it was the best thing ever! He only got a bit, but he was crazy for it.

I hope to feed them a meal tomorrow ~ his first raw meal. I need to get back into raw but I've been too busy.

Mine continue to be on raw. Mostly chicken as that is what is most readily available around here. Although, tonight I cut up some pork chops for them and added some yogurt and an egg each. They all gulped it up. :D Sadie looks to be losing some weight, she needed to drop a few pounds. Grant looks to have lost some as well, he needed to lose more than a couple. Maggie is holding steady with her doggie supermodel body. ;) Mine have been on raw now for probably 6 or so months and I love it, so do the pups.

There was a sale on beef brisket a couple weeks ago so I bought two 15-16 lb ones.
Needless to say they've had that a few times a week plus turkey wings and legs along with beef liver, beef heart and beef kidney.
They've also shared a couple pork butt roasts.

Keegan's been working on a turkey this week.
And due to her weight gain (before the raw diet)
I am journaling the amount she eats so if she eats a bit more one day I can
cut her back the next.
I brought some stuff (mostly chicken, with a pork liver, and deer meat) out the freezer this morning but the only thing that is probably fully thawed is chicken livers.

I wanted to bring this thread back from the dead to add - and I'm serious - I JUST ATE GREEN TRIPE!!!1 D:<

Everyone in my family smelled the green tripe when I was getting it out for the dogs, and gagging... and my sister bet me $20 that I wouldn't eat it. So, being that I am really bad at turning down any bets, I did it. And it was horrible. And I hate myself. My boyees, on the other hand, eat it like it's candy.

If you've never smelled green tripe, picture if you will, a porty-potty filled with meat... and left out in 100 degree weather for a week. Now you can imagine why I hate myself.

How are you feeling Erica? ;)

The kids are still on RAW 95% of the time, the baby loves it. Tonight they had...

Clover: Lamb mince, Vegies and a chicken frame + a cod liver tablet and Glucosamine.

El & Tinny: Lamb mince, mushed up carrot (for their weight loss) & Tinny got a chicken neck.

Harri: 1 chicken neck and some lamb mince and vegies. He then had a munch on a lamb bone after his dinner for a while.

I got my bike fixed but got home too late tonight to start on the fitness program for E & T, so tomorrow i am going to take them on a bit of a run ;). Should have them looking fab in no time.

Barney: Propet Large Puppy formula.

Clover : Propet Large Puppy formula.

100% NON-Raw.

In fact they had the same thing everyday for the past 3.5, and 3.75 yrs. Clover holds the record: 18 seconds to consume evening meal. Barney prefers to chew his dry food - or maybe he is savoring the incredible taste? Usually takes upward to 1 minute to finish eating. Both holding ideal weight. No allergies, no health problems, and all too eager to chase after any passing deer herds, squirrels, bunnies etc.

hawhaw... I know, I'm ashamed of myself. But my sister (this is my older sister, who isn't around my Raw feeding and thinks it's bizarre) was guilt-tripping me about feeding it to my dogs, and how it was supposed to be human grade, and why would I feed it to them if I couldn't eat it myself. Yeah. Horrible. However, I wasn't sick at all, just mentally disgusted by it. I only ate like a tiny 1/4 spoonful, but never ever again! The ironic part is that I am, in fact, a vegetarian. bwaha.

Btw... I have yet to see that $20. D:<

Today was the day before Fozzie's B-day, so they both get special, expensive stuff!! I went to Whole Foods, which has way way pricey meat, but I had to buy things for them.

Gonzo ~
Tripe
4 Lamb Ribs
Grandad's Beef Organ & Veggie Blend
Dried Chicken Hearts (I just bought these as treats, and they luuurve them!)

Fozzie ~
Tripe
2 Lamb Ribs
Grandad's Beef Organ & Veggie Blend
Dried Chicken Hearts
Oatmeal w/ honey

I should've fed them less, because they are getting SO spoiled tomorrow!!! I'm even making doggy "beer"... consisting of water, ice, "dog gatorade" (a powder, I forget the brand), and green food dye, in the blender. And beef heart cupcakes, LOLZ!

I just wanted to bump this up because of all the dog food recalls.

I was at the grocery the other day and I was thinking that there is no way I could even bring myself to buy any treats for the dogs little alone a bag of food. Who knows what's going to be on the list next.

I am so happy I feed my dogs raw! They all had pork butt and LOVED it:D

I switched back to kibble recently because feeding raw to three dogs was too expensive. The Shelties refused to eat kibble. They only ate enough to keep them going.. so I gave in and got them back on raw. Luckily, I found out a friend of mine works for a raw company.. so I get her discount on food now! :D I pay $22CAD for 40 pounds of ground chicken. Wooohoo!! :D

Anywho.. today they all got ground chicken w/bone (shelties got 50% pumpkin).

Thought I'd try to revive this thread.. :)

The Shelties are back on raw after a little hiatus. Kee's still on kibble (supplemented w/occasional raw) cause I just can't afford to put all of them on raw full time.

Today they had a chicken thigh for breakfast. The Shelties will be having 1/2 ground rabbit & 1/2 pumpkin for dinner.
