I've been a terrible mommy. They've been eating kibble the last 2 days. :( 2 family members have passed away :( & I've been having problems at home on top of it all, water leaks, car problems etc.. Things are just so hectic right now, just as I was switching back to ALL raw. Once things calm down & I can actually go shopping they will be on all raw, by next week sometime at the latest. Ok, sorry for another vent. lol

Wow, Sue, that's an awful lot to be dealing with right now. Take care of yourself, your dogs will be fine on kibble for a little while :)

Buck had trout for breakfast this morning. I have beef brisket thawing out for all of them for later.

The kids had a mushy mix of egg, sardines, sardine oil, flax seed & livamol supplement. Some grated/ mushed up carrot. Clover had left over chicken carcass (1/4) and El had some beef & chicken mince. Tinny had some beef mince and a chicken thigh. Yummmmmy :p.

Anyone know if dogs can eat shark meat?

My brother and his friends caught a big shark - it gives you TONS of meat. If my brother catches another he'd be able to give me some of the meat but I want to make sure shark is okay to feed.

I've read on a couple websites that you can but wanted to see everyone's opinions.

Roxy had whatever was left of the whole chicken, and Lily had 1/2 of a thigh.

Definetly! All meat is food to a dog ;)

I'm getting many mixed feelings on the shark meat (posting on several other sites)
A few websites have said yes, and the dogs can even chew on fins as treats.
A few message boards, the majority said there are too many mercury & toxins and carries fluke worms.

I've yet to hear from the lady that I've been asking the most questions to. She seems incredibly educated on the RAW feeding subject and I trust and understand most of her statements on it.

I'm going to google it a bit more and ask a few more people then see wether or not I want to feed shark.

Could you imagine if I tossed a big shark in the middle of the yard for my three to eat!? They'd probably look at me like I'm crazy.

Well I finally did it. With the help of Sarah and many other's my dog's ate there first Raw meal today!

They each got a chicken leg Quarter.

Nova LOVED it but Konnor wasn't to sure how to eat it. It took Nova so long to figure out she was just supposed to chew it. She tried to pull the skin off but it didn't work, so finally she put the whole thing in her mouth and decided she should just bite into it. Konnor wasn't so lucky. He is a licker and just sat there and licked the quarter for about a half hour. Finally I cut it into three pieces. He only ate about one of the three then he gave up. I don't know if he doesn't like chicken or just wasn't sure if it was really food. Tonight he is still acting like he wants his kibble so I know he is still hungry. We will try again tomorrow though and see if he does any better.

Ok, it happened sooner than I thought it would. The dogs are back on an all raw diet.

Raustyk & Nanook do have some kibble left, not sure if I am gonna keep it & freeze it for when I have to have someone else watch them or just toss it. But kaige & Indy have no kibble left and they LOVE being "forced" to eat raw for every meal. lol

I went to the grocery store last night to pick up some chicken for the dogs. Thought it was on sale for 58cents/lb, went to check out & it was only 30somethingcents/lb. So of course I went back & got more. Came home with 50lbs of chicken & some organs all for less than $20. Thats almost enough for 2 weeks. Compared to feeding kibble, feeding raw for the next 2 weeks is $15 cheaper than feeding PREMIUM kibble.

Roxyluvsme13
06-21-2006, 02:54 PM
Whoaaa... I forgot to thaw their meat last night so they'll be having kibble :(. But wow, haha, that's cheap, and if *I* bought that much meat it would last me like a month :p. Is it too early to start on organs and something besides chicken yet? They seem pretty well adjusted to it, but I think they'd like some variety.

.sarah
06-21-2006, 03:33 PM
Briana - you could always feed it frozen. Or you could put it in a ziplock baggie and run it under hot water for a few minutes to semi-thaw it (never microwave - that will cook it). Or you could put it in a baggie in cold water for a few hours and completely thaw it. Or you could skip a meal until it thaws in the fridge :p

If their stools are fine and they are acting normal and eating normally (I mean not turning their noses up) then you can switch to another meat. If Lily is still having any reserves about eating then don't give her something else because it would be as if she's winning the "I don't wanna eat chicken" battle. ;) I would add organs last, after you've added all of your meat sources, just because they're not that important right now.

My crew had some huge 2 lb turkey legs today. For dinner Buck is getting some pork and Mandy and Nova will be getting their daily chicken feet.

Roxyluvsme13

Lily HATES her food frozen :p. She's a picky butt, and I usually have to slightly defrost it in the microwave for her to eat it.. Is that still cooking it? Roxy's absolutely loving every single bit of this, so I'm not afraid to add more for her. What meat do you recommend adding next?

Trout
Egg (Nala ate the shell, other 2 didn't want it still.)

Ewww... I had to split the tripe into portions today. I forgot how bad fresh tripe smelled. The ground stuff is SOOOO much better! And that was only 2.5 pounds! I still have 15 pounds of tripe coming in! YUCK!

Anywho, the pups had a bit of tripe and split a chicken quarter. For dinner they're gonna have llama, kelp, sardines and an egg.

lv4dogs

For dinner they had:
chicken quarter
slice of venison
egg & shells

For breakfast this morning they had a small chicken quarter.

I think I am going to start to feed them once a day instead of twice. I have always fed twice a day even when I was feeding all raw before. But after researching how often people feed their dogs I see a LOT of raw feeders only feed once a day.
It would make my life a LOT easier. Morning feedings are just so hurried in my house, especially now that I am back feeding just raw and have another dog in my household. Half the time the dogs don't eat much breakfast and if they do they usually aren't too enthused about it.

Gonzo & Fozzie split a whole turkey breast with the bone. Each got a whole egg, but Fozzie ate both of the shells. :)

Fozzie will get 2 meals of CN later, as usual.

I feed Gonzo one big meal in the morning, and usually just his supps at night with some dairy or organ/muscle meat or veggies/fruit.

My dogs only get one meal, Sue.
Roxy had a chicken quarter, and Lily had kibble because I was sort of sick today and didn't feel like dividing hers. But I have enough meat for 8 days for Lily, and 5 for Roxy. I realized a huge bag of chicken quarters was only $0.79 a pound, so I plan on going back and buying that soon.

Yay, Simba is going to be SO happy.

The meat market my mom is working at also sells produce. My mom brought how two bunches of bananas that are fine but too brown to sell, as well as some baby carrots.

Simba doesn't really like to eat his veggie/fruit mixture unless it has a bit of banana in it. He LOVES banana puree.

Okay, lemme back-track.

On the 22nd and 23rd they had chicken quarters.

On the 24th they had a pig ear, Buck also had some pork.

Yesterday they had beef heart, an egg, and chicken gizzards for breakfast. For dinner Buck had some beef brisket and the girls had some trout.

Today so far Mandy and Nova have had chicken feet, Luka had a pig ear, and Buck had a chicken quarter. For dinner I have chicken liver and lamb shanks thawing.

Every day Mandy and Nova have three chicken feet for their joints.

It's been almost a month since mine have been having 1 raw meal a day.

They are doing very well on it. Weird thing is, Kiara - the dog who ate 12 large rawhide candy canes, a big bag of Halloween candy, and everything else imaginable - WITHOUT getting sick - throws up her egg shell & when she gets bones.

Wierd or what?

She finally ate her egg shell last night (I burried it in her chicken/veggie mush.) She chewed it but when I got home there was a little pile of broken up egg shell (I'm assuming whatever liquid came with it was dried already.)

I figured she'd do the best on this diet since she seems to have a stomach of steal.

I think Simba is enjoying it the most. :) He LOVES his raw chicken legs and gets so excited when it's time to eat. He usually takes the leg out of his bowl and leaves the rest until he's done with his chicken.

For those who have only just recently switched to RAW how are you and your dogs coping? I hope all is going well, and the dogs are enjoying their food.

I have just recently switched back to an all raw fed diet. But even when I was feeding kibble for a little while there they would get a raw meal at least every 3ish days or so but usually it was at least once every day or two.

It's been one week today since they have eaten nothing but raw!

Even so there are still things that improved with them and everyone's stools are smaller, a lot smaller!!!
Raustyk:
She's the rescued 8 y/o rott with many health problems as well as joint/ligament problems. History unkown, probably a very bad BYB.
Her teeth are getting cleaner yet & her breath is a lot better. Her teeth have always been bad, they were terrible when I adopted her at 6 months of age & even after being clean, if I slack on teeth cleaning in any way they get dirty/tartery/smelly super fast. With raw her teeth are so good that there is no need for ME to clean her teeth.
She seems to be having less joint pain.
Her anal glands are not bothering her at all. They used to be terrible, very bad for a few years. As I introduced better premium foods and raw there was no need for me to physically express them anymore but she still would have to "work" a little bit at getting them emptied on her own.
She is going through some detox though I won't lie. Thankfully most of it is just about over already. Her coat is a little dry and she shedded like crazy but it's starting to come in shiny, soft & smooth. Her skin became falky but that has stopped. Her eyes were a little runny for a couple days, but again that has stopped as well. Not sure if it makes a difference but she has always had eye, skin & coat issues.

Nanook:
Keep in mind he is almost 16 y/o with many major health problems & mobility issues. Shep/husy/? mix. Also a rescue with history unkown other than he was shot with 50 birdshots before I got him & most are still lodged in him.
His breath has improved a lot! He has always had awesome teeth (he's also always had more bones than everyone else)!
His skin & coat is slowly improving. I don't seem to have to groom his as often as I did so far.
Seems a little more alert and it seems as if his vision is improving a little bit.

Kaige:
1 y/o Aussie, from reputable breeder
His coat is softer & seems to have filled out nicely. Not sure if this is due to his age.
His teeth are staying totally bleach white naturally.
It seems to me that his energy level is better. It's like he's not as ancy like a kid when they drink a soda.
He also is going through a bit of a detox, just one symptom though. His eyes produce a little more eye gunk.

Indy:
b/f's dog, almost 4 y/o lab mix.
She is having a hard time eating the chicken so she's skipped a couple meals & had a few smaller meals. Sure she gets other meats and eats full meals, we are just trying to get her to eat chicken. We are not going to let her starve.
Her coat is getting softer & even shinier and she's shedding less.
She too has been going through detox, just like Kaige though it's only the little bit of extra gunk in her eyes. It's starting to improve.

Me:
Did I mention that their stools are a LOT smaller?!
I enjoy watching them eat.
I feel better knowing my dogs are healthier!
I don't know what the heck to do with all the kibble that I have. :p

What type of kibble is it?

If it's one with a longer shelf life - store it somewhere safe. You never know when your power may fail and your meats will rot/expire.

I'll always have kibble on hand just incase - not that I WANT them - hurricanes come to visit me.

If it doesn't have a long shelf life, donate it to the local shelter? If it's opened and they won't take it - donate it to a friend?

I have a tiny bit of evo left but I'm saving that.

Then there's about 20-30lbs (opened, dumped in their food bin, no bag) of Nutro large breed senior mixed with a little bit of CSFTDLS senior (might also be a large breed formula).

Was going to donate it but they won't accept if it has no bag. They take open bags though. I use their food bins as a shelf too so so far I've just kept it in the bin waiting for (A)I find someone/someplace that wants it (B)I use it or (C)it goes bad. lol

Kay, many dogs don't like eggshells. My dogs happen to think they are yummy crunchie treats but only when I feed them to them seperately. If I just put eggshells in their food they will eat around them. I know several people that feed raw will bake the eggshells and then grind them into a powder with something like a coffee grinder. That may work better for you. :)

Nala LOVES them and has no problem digesting them. She thinks they're potato chips.

I just made my three some more "frosty paws." There's about 25 of them in my freezer. I'm going to give them as their daily veggie/fruits/yogurt - they love 'em especially since it's so hot outside. This batch will last me about a week.

Went to the store today and saw VEAL neckbones for 2.59/lb! Veal has always been 14.99/lb where I've seen it. I suppose it's because it was neckbones, and it was still more than I like to pay, but hey, variety is the spice of life! ;) So they had those a minute ago and also had a Dogster (like Frosty Paws but with less additives) and they loved the Dogster! We bought some yogurt and stuff so we could make our own Frosty Paws. I think it's a good treat for the hot summer! :)

Not sure what they're going to have for dinner yet.

As long as it has been frozen outdated meat is ok to feed to dogs, provided it is not extremely spoiled & the like.

Outdated as in...??

What kind of meat?
What's the date on it?
Where has it been stored?

As long as it's been frozen and it's eaten within a few days after being thawed (or eaten frozen.)

Sarah, my three are LOVING their home-made frosty paws!
Grrr.. I need to find a nice meat market.

.sarah
06-29-2006, 03:45 PM
Yes it's okay.

Don't switch her back to kibble if she doesn't eat. If you do this will never work and you'll be creating a picky dog. If she doesn't want it, put it back in the fridge for later. Do this for three-four days. If after four days she isn't eating, try another meat, she may just not like chicken. But you can't play the game where if she isn't eating, you feed kibble. Kibble is addictive to dogs - it is full of "yummy" carbs and is sprayed with fat or something to make it smell good. To dogs, kibble is sometimes more appetizing than raw.

Also, don't keep switching from raw to kibble back and back to raw. Find what you can stick with. You're really going to upset their tummies one day. By the way, it's okay to feed mostly chicken while money is tight. Feed whatever you can get for the least amount of money. Or feed kibble, but don't keep switching. :)

Like it was best sell by June 17 (we bought it a day before that)
It's chicken quarter, and it's been in the freezer.. but I had to thaw it so I could wrap it (but it wasnt completely unthawed)

What are you putting in them besides yogurt? We were thinking banana, peanut butter, canned pumpkin ... stuff like that.

Some that I've made contained:

Carrots, Celery, & Tomato
Banana & Yogurt
Oatmeal, Peanut Butter, & Banana

Basically anything other than meat, I mix it up and put them in cups as frost paws. :p

I've been cutting them out of the cups and putting it into their bowls, or giving it to them in the cups to lick out. It takes them more time to eat it in the cups, so that's a plus. If it's out of the cup they just bite right into it and it makes me cringe! (My teeth are very cold sensitive.)

Roxyluvsme,
Rinse it off. ;) You don't even have to do that really. Simba's eaten twigs, dirt, etc with his meat because he seems to think he HAS to eat it in the grass and won't eat it on the patio. Silly dog.

QUESTION FOR THOSE OF YOU WITH CATS AND FEED RAW:
is it ok to give my cat basically the same things i do my dogs?
(obviously in a much smaller portions)

Absolutely! Except cats are carnivores too, so do not be surprised if they don't eat any fruit/veggie and please don't push it on them either, all meat is better for them.
Now a little here & there isn't going to hurt just like us humans sometimes eat junk food & the like. If you have a cat like my Tiki, he will eat just about anything and he loves it all too!

Oops forgot to post this mornings breakfast.

I fed them a large meal as we are leaving to go on a camping trip this afternoon. I wasn't sure how hectic it would be there and how Kaige & Indy would re-act (this is Kaige's first time camping & Indy's second besides camping in our yard). We'll be gone for 5 days total. I wanted them to have a full belly this morning in case they dodn't want to eat tonight or if they act different & I may not want to feed them tonight.

5:30 am, they each had:
chicken quarter (they were huge)
chicken organs (liver, heart, gizzard) (2-4 pieces each)
pork ribs (2-4 each)
egg & shell

And now they are knawing on a beef bone which is almost at the take away stage.

For the next 5 days while camping I packed:
Chicken quarters
pork ribs
eggs
I wanted to keep it simple as I am not sure how their systems will handle this trip.
We'll probably pick them up something different at the store while we are there as we have to go out Sunday & get fresh salads anyways. (always gotta check out new stores for meat deals)

That is wonderful that everyones dogs are doning well. Hopefully the detoxing will stop soon. Indy's coat looks gorgeous and shiny. Sarah i had to cover the screen from Clover when i scrolled down past the Labbies dinners ;).

Last night the kids had chicken wings (Bought a kilo of mixed chicken portions and they were all wings  ), they also had a little bit of beef mince and some yogurt. Tonight they will probably have chicken again tonight, i need to pick it up before trainng in the morning (3 whole chickens for $10 woohoo). Hopefully the meat wholesaler will have some sales on so i can stock up for the coming weeks.

ETA: Clover used to be my "fat dog" she is now the best built out of the lot of them, her muscle mass has increased, and she does not have an ounce of flab on her anymore. I am so happy with how she is doing, her energy level is up aswell. And i hope i am adding a few extra years onto her life.

Ok, so Roxy likes her meat frozen, strangely. At least she seemed to like it while I was out there. She had a chicken quarter. Lily is the opposite and likes her thawed, plus defrosted for about 2 min. I haven't switched Lily back to Raw yet, just Roxy for the moment. Eventually, they'll both be back on it, but for now just Roxy.

I was gone to San Francisco yesterday and today, up until now. They got pretty spoiled, because I thawed extra special things for them to keep them in a good mood while Mommy's gone. It didn't really work for Gonzo, he slept by the door all night and he's acting a little spazzy now that I'm home (like not wanting to leave me).

Gonzo (yesterday) ~ 1/4 of a duck (he loves duck, 100x more than chicken. wierdooo.) and a pig snout! He also got a frosty paw for dinner/dessert.

Fozzie (yesterda) ~ Duck leg, a chicken liver & a chicken heart with chicken muscle meat, and a frosty paw for dinner.

Gonzo (today) ~ Buffalo Farmore, and he will get some fruit puree for dinner. He's gnawing on a knuckle bone right now, he gets 10-15 minutes with that =0)

Fozzie ~ Lamb Shank for breakfast, some Farmore Buffalo for lunch, and he will get a frozen kibble-and-fruit-puree Kong later tonight.

Kay, I really like your frosty paws idea. We all know that Frosty Paws by Purina can get a little pricey and aren't exactly nutrionally balanced! I'll definitely make some of those, sounds very easy.

I feed both ways. Usually boneless meat is frozen because they'll gulp it right up. Sometimes chicken is frozen because they eat it really fast. I try to thaw everything for Buck and Mandy because they pace themselves when they eat. Nova and Luka don't do that so sometimes they have the things I mentioned frozen.

Today they had a turkey leg. I have a half of a chicken thawing for Buck for dinner. I have chicken feet thawing for Nova and Mandy, and I have a pig foot thawing for Luka.

I've studied canine nutrition A LOT this year so far and in my opinion, Nutro is pretty low. However, it's A LOT better than a majority of dog owners feed.

Haven't been on the Pittie forum in a while. Didn't really feel "in" there because I don't have a purebred Pit, yet.. ;)

Who was this "someone?" If you bargain and feed correctly, it's cheaper in the long run. If you buy in bulk and portion out correctly, it's cheaper and lasts longer.

It depends on the individual. For a while I was spending way more on raw (the food itself. I was still saving on vet bills!) Now that I can buy in bulk, it costs me a little over a dollar a day to feed two dogs. I also like to buy the more expensive things like elk, venison, llama, buffalo, rabbit, and such though.

I've been following this thread for a while. I'm still very unsure about a raw diet, but I'm considering at least trying it. Researching it is a bit overwhelming to me, I'm afraid I won't do it right. It seems there's several different types of raw diets, I don't know what is best.

I'm considering it more for Nebo's enjoyment than anything. His skin/coat are nice (not greasy or dry) and he seems healthy with plenty of energy, clear eyes, ears always clean never infected, and his teeth are clean because I brush them. But he really doesn't *like* dog food, I think he would enjoy eating raw a lot more. I know he would like chewing on raw bones but I don't want him to chip a tooth or wear his teeth down.

I gave him his first raw egg tonight just for curiosities sake. He loved the raw egg but wasn't too interested in the shell, he ate some of it and Sydney did too. He'll probably have diarrhea now (he has a very sensitive stomach). We have some frozen venison I've wondered about giving him (his dog food he currently eats is venison formula the other formulas with chicken, etc gave him diarrhea).

The idea of a premade raw diet is more appealing to me but its not sold locally that I can find and its very expensive to order online. So yeah there really wasn't a point to this post other than looking for information I suppose.

Amy, stop by ALL of your local feed stores, you're bound to find pre-made raw. Talk to managers and check the back room, where the freezer items are sometimes kept. I recommend Farmore or Primal. They're available everywhere in the West, and not nearly as expensive as others (like Natures Variety). Farmore has Beef, Buffalo & Lamb (along with Chicken) if you're worried about it agreeing with Nebo's tummy.

Pre-made is definitely a safe & simple way to make the switch to raw, you can begin formulating a diet on your own and adding RMB's when you feel comfortable. RMB's are ideal, though, because of the process of chewing the meat, fat, and bone. Good luck! I'm sure Nebo would be over-joyed =0)

Cool! I didn't know you were thinking about feeding raw. Glad everything is going well! :)

Yesterday Mandy never ate, she wasn't hungry. She didn't want to eat when I first put it down but ate a few bites after a minute or two, then walked away. And Buck never ate the pork hocks for dinner because the 3.75 pounds of pork roast he ate yesterday morning gave him gas and I wanted his tummy to settle.

Buck had the pork hocks for breakfast. Mandy is going to eat her pork roast (from yesterday) for dinner. Buck's getting a half a chicken for dinner and Nova and Luka are getting a quarter of a chicken.

Don't buy the tripe from the grocery store - it is bleached for human consumption and has few nutrients left in it. If you want it you're going to have to get it from someone who doesn't have USDA inspected meat. I'm buying from someone who strictly raises animals for dogs and cats fed raw food, so USDA isn't really needed.

I have never fed it but am on a waiting list to get 20lbs. I have heard it stinks to high heaven though. If you can't find it don't worry about it, it's a good add-on to a diet but not imperitive. :)

-----

Change in plans - Mandy didn't have pork. I gave the pork to Buck, Luka had a half of a chicken, Mandy and Nova had a quarter of a chicken and a few pieces of beef that I was packaging up for tomorrow, and also their daily chicken feet.

I don't buy USDA inspected meat because..... I live in England :D
But I do understand what you are saying. Thanks Sarah!
In that case I shall give raw tripe a miss.
Snowy gets dried tripe anyway on occassions as a treat.

The pups had chicken quarters & beef liver last night.

This morning they had a very small amount of boneless beef (just got about 50lbs of it for free last night) with some cottage cheese & an egg & shell each.

Tonight will be beef.

I decided to continue to feed twice a day. But I am feeding a larger meal at night & just a snack in the morning. Except on weekends when I have more time (and I like to keep the amount of food & variety of meats varied) they may get a little larger breakfast & a little smaller dinner.

I wanted to add that almost every day (will be everyday once my "orders" with some local butchers start building up their stock for me) they get chicken feet &/or beef tracheas. I usually give these as a snack, about 1-3 hours before or after a meal. Right now because my supply is limited it is mainly just Nanook & Raustyk that get these. They are both great sources of glucosamine & chondrotin, great for joint problems!

Yep, I give three chicken feet to Nova every day for prevention of HD and ED symptoms, and Mandy gets 3+ for arthritis depending on the activity that she gets that day (if she swims she gets 5 or 6). All of the dogs eat them like potato chips! Mandy chooses chicken feet over fish, which must mean they are really good!

Do you get tracheas from your butcher?

Do you get tracheas from your butcher?

Yuppers. So far it's the only place I can find them. I have a few butchers saving them for me (my one main butcher is too busy to save me a bunch of stuff right now which is why my supply is very low right now, happens every summer with him, but I think I found someone a lot better, he may soon be my ex-main butcher). It is something you will probably have to talk to your butcher about saving them for you as it's normally just scrap to them. But even so, some butchers are able to special order it for you, but thats usually a bit more expensive.
Pet & feed stores often have the smoked tracheas, most commonly distributed by Merrick, but raw is much much much better.

If you think your guys go bonkers over the feet wait till you feed the tracheas, they are my dogs all time favorite food.

I know my butcher carries tracheas, I have to get some now! I'm going today or tomorrow, it's Gonzo's B-day this weekend so I want to get him something extra-special. He loves duck & goose, so he'll probably get some of that too.

I finally took pictures of a meal =0)

Thanks for the info. I have stopped at all the local feed stores that I know if (only 2) and they both sold really crappy dog food. Petco and Petsmart are the only places locally that sell decent dog food but they don't have raw. There are a couple of places in the SLC area that sell raw I'm going to look into. I emailed one of them and they sold Nature's Variety it was $23.00 for 6 lbs. They told me I'd have to feed 1-1/2 lbs per day for a dog Nebo's size. Is that really expensive or am I nuts? :o One package wouldn't even last me a week. That was the venison formula maybe the others aren't as bad. Would it be ok to feed just a half lb per day and dry dog food for the rest?

I looked into Farmore and it doesn't list Utah as a state it is sold in. I didn't see any locations where Primal is sold on their website. Doubtful any of those are sold here. :/ Does anyone know if the freeze dried raw diets are as good (nutrition wise at least) as the frozen ones? I think it'd be easier to order that online than the frozen if I decided to go that route.

In the meantime I have been giving Nebo a raw egg (with shell...he'll only eat it if I really chop it up though) in his dog food every other day. So far so good no diarrhea and he seems to really like it.

I buy from grocery stores if I'm really low and can't make a trip out to the butcher I buy from. Grocery store meat is fine to feed.. I just find it really expensive. I think you might be better off going to a butcher. You could probably get some scraps that they can't sell too!

Do a search for "Tom Lonsdale". I posted a thread a couple weeks ago with a link to a free full-version E-book of his. "Give your dog a bone" is also a good one to start with. There's also an awesome LJ community (rawdogs I believe) with tons of great links.

I wouldn't worry about free-range/hormone free meat at this point. It's not what's in his dog food (actually the dog food meat is probably way worse than the meat in the grocery store) so just getting him on grocery store meat is a huge step up from kibble. Once you're settled into the routine of a raw diet, then I would start searching for co-ops and other places to get free-range. Too much stuff at first (even on your part) is stressful and can make the diet a failure on your part or the dog's part.

At this point I buy from grocery stores and butchers. Just recently I learned about a supplier who raises/buys meat for dog and cat consumption only, and all meat is free range, humanely raised and killed, and hormone free. I am on a waiting list for green tripe from her and once it comes in, I will place an order for other things from her as well. I also am starting to get in touch with hunters to get leftovers from their hunts, and also am planning on getting in touch with cattle and swine farmers that I know, and see what they can hook me up with. There are lots of options for humanely raised and hormone free meats, but I would really wait until you're in a routine and then start searching. He'd only be on grocery store meats for a little while. :)

Book reccomendations - Tom Lonsdale "Raw Meaty Bones" and "Work Wonders". You can download a "Work Wonders" preview here: http://www.rawmeatybones.com/book-files/ww.pdf

Stay away from recent Ian Billinghurt books, he has this new-found theory that everything needs to be ground and there needs to be way more bone than found in a prey animal. From what Cali has said, his old ways of thinking were along the lines of prey-model raw, and so I guess his old books would be fine, but I personally have not heard many good things about Billinghurst from prey-model feeders.

There are other good books out there, I have a few, but don't have them in front of me. I'll take a look later and then let you know what they are. :)

I get most of my meat from pet supply stores and our vet. :) Most of it is Club Canine. It's ground meat and organs. It's awesome stuff. The last time I actually looked at how much I spent was when I bought a 6 pack of moose --- cost me $10 and lasted me 6 days. Not bad for moose though. The green tripe I get from Club Canine costs $10 for 10 packs, lasts me forever! When I go to the grocery store I always make sure to grab some ground beef (It can last me a few days), and pork hocks. I go to the butcher if I want oxtail, chicken backs, necks, or wings.

In my area, grocery store meat is all I can afford pretty much. I'd love to feed free-range/hormone free/etc. meat but it is SO expenisve in my area. Sure I get GREAT deals from my butcher but thats mainly on organs and scraps and the like. If I want (and I do need it) meaty bones like chicken quarters & the like I have to buy from grocery stores.
I am sure that if I could buy more in bulk I could get cheaper prices on "good" meaty bones from my butchers but I'm gonna need a chest freezer before that happens.

For dinner last night they each got:
a couple tablespoons of ground beef, 1 egg & shells & 2-3 chicken heart/liver/gizzard all mixed up (some don't really care for chicken organs & we have to "hide" them in meals)
a chicken quarter

I FINALLY got my butt over to the Surrey Meat Packers and bought Bailey 60 pounds of beef for $40.00. It is ground up and includes muscle meat, fat, bones and organs - plus some other parts of the cow. It is cut into 1 1/4-2 pound portions, which makes it alot easier for me to bag them. He will be getting this for 20 days @ 3 pounds per day. We felt the extra pound of food he was getting probably didn't make much of a difference so we are cutting it down to 3 pounds.

He will still be getting REC bones for chewing and fish 1X per week. When this beef is done, I will be buying 44 pounds of chicken backs/necks for $29.00, plus another 50 pounds of either lamb, duck, buffalo or turkey (it is all ground and cut into portions as well) - they are insanely cheap there - and I just found out they sell rabbit for $5.99/pound.

He is going to be one happy boy! :D

I can't go full raw yet (just can't afford it unless I can buy it in bulk and I don't have a freezer for that, but I plan to). But I was getting groceries for myself this morning and picked up some bone-in organic chicken, and chicken organ meats. Since I only have myself to feed now really, I can afford to at least supplement their EVO with some raw. At first it was so tempting to go all out and get all kinds of different meats, but I want to start slow and move gradually. They've been kibble fed their whole lives so I don't want to overwhelm their systems.

Still it felt great and I am excited :D.

They had their first raw egg today. Everyone took it willingly, Bon had his gone in no time but the girls weren't as sure. Huney broke hers open and cleaned out the inside and left the shell (which Bon ate). I had to coat Roxey into breaking hers and then she licked the inside and ate some of the shell (of course Bon cleaned up the rest of that too).
So far they are loving their diet.

One more question...
For those of you with more than one dog how do you feed them? Separately or together? In a crate? Outside?

I ask this because I'm not quite happy with our arrangement and I'm thinking of putting them all in their crates to eat.
Not that there has ever been a fight or anything, but I know it could possibly happen and Bon is so much bigger than the girls (especially Huney). He's usually done before them and starts sniffing around their food.
So I just want to know how you feed.

.sarah
07-18-2006, 09:03 AM
They're going to have turkey drumsticks when I get home for lunch.

William - I meant to answer your question :o They can have eggs as often as their system allows it. My dogs get them 1 or 2 times a week, but usually that's because I don't usually feed in bowls, and the girls all like their egg cracked before they'll eat it. ;)

For those of you with more than one dog how do you feed them? Separately or together? In a crate? Outside?
I feed outside. I have an Xpen set up with two outside beds in it. Luka and Buck eat in the Xpen and Mandy and Nova eat on the deck outside of it. Mandy has food aggression issues but Nova is smart enough to leave her alone.

Here is their set up:
http://www.southernmutt.com/photos/061206/_MG_0632.jpg

Mandy usually eats on the mat in front of the door, but sometimes she does stand there. I hand out the food next to that railing where she is standing ;)

For those of you with more than one dog how do you feed them? Separately or together? In a crate? Outside?

It really depends on what they are eating & what the weather is like.

If they are eating something on a bone or a large piece of meat, etc... (otherwise not ground up, canned, mixed, etc...) and the weather is decent they eat outside.
This gets a little tricky/confusing now.
If I can watch their every move the entire time they eat I feed them all at once (no one needs to be on a tie out when I am there to watch them at all times). As soon as one finishes I put them inside. I've never had any problems what so ever with them fighting but sometimes one will try to steel the others food (usually Kaige) if they finish first. My dogs are very well mannered, often times they will give their meat up to anyone or anything that tries to take it away (especially Nanook).

If I can not watch their every move (but I do still keep a good eye on them) I will feed only a couple/few at a time. Nanook is never leashed so he picks a spot outside of the tie outs where he can not be reached by any of the other dogs. All of the other dogs are on tie outs when I am not out there with them the entire time. I feed in the same order everytime (Nanook, Raustyk, Kaige then Indy) so Raustyk will always eat with Nanook. I will sometimes let Kaige eat at the same time as Raustyk & Nanook, that is only IF he has something that will last him a while because the 2 tie outs can reach each other and he may try to steel Raustyk's if he finishes first. If it's a chicken quarter or something else that he is known to eat faster than the other dogs then I usually wait until Raustyk is done eating (or just finishing up) before I feed Kaige. Which will obviously mean that Indy will sometimes eat alone, other times she will eat with Kaige.

If it is raining, snowing or extremely hot outside (or any other type of bad weather) they eat inside. I feed pretty much the same as above only it is inside and they are forced to eat on towels, linoleum and or in their crates (all for sanitary reasons ONLY). Depending on what they eat & where they prefer to eat decides who gets to eat when & who gets to eat with who.

If they get any grond meat, canned meats (salmon, mackeral, etc..) or anything else that is not a lartge chunk it gets put right into their bowl & eat all at the same time, just like they would if it was kibble.

Nanook NEVER tries to take food away from any of the other dogs.
Kaige is the ONLY one who will try to take Nanooks food. Then again Kaige will kind of try to take anyones food, but usually doesn't ever get it away from Raustyk. He just begs at her when she eats. lol
Raustyk NEVER tries to take food from Nanook. She will only try to take away Kaige or Indy's food if they are eating it really slowly, like they are not interested or getting full.
Indy will only try to take Kaiges food, and she will only try to take it if he doesn't seem that interested and it something that she REALLY likes (she's not TOO keen on some pieces of chicken). BUT if you feed anything in a bowl Indy will sometimes try to nudge right in with Raustyk or Kaige. In that case I need to direct her out of the kitchen as soon as she finishes any food that is fed in a bowl.

Geesh I hope I got all that right, more so I hope it was easy to understand. lol

For those of you with more than one dog how do you feed them? Separately or together? In a crate? Outside?
Anna it realy depends on the weather. At the moment they are eating inside and everone gets fed at the same time. If they are getting bones or other large chunky meat then i will just hand it strait to them and they take their food to their beds.

If they are getting mince, sardines, egg etc their bowls are in different corners of the room. Sometimes they have different meals and one will finish before the others so who ever finished first is either put in a stay whilst the others finished or tossed a whole carrot to amuse them for a minute more.

If they brake their stay or inhale their carrot and try to steal the others food then they are put outside for a time out. Also i watch them at all times.

One more question...
For those of you with more than one dog how do you feed them? Separately or together? In a crate? Outside?

For bones, (as bad as it sounds) I let them eat wherever they want. Kaedyn usually carries it to the living room carpet [I don't care because the carpet is old, not white, and as far as I know, no one puts their mouth on the carpet. =P] Kai carries it to his crate or to another room, away from Kaedyn. For things they can't carry away, I put the bowls down in the kitchen right by each other.. they're pretty good about staying away from each other's food. Kai eats too fast for Kaedyn to steal it, and Kaedyn eats, never leaving his bowl, so that Kai can't have any. =P

I feed both dogs outside, when they get RMB's. If the get pre-made, muscle meat, offal, or other meals, they get them in their bowls most of the time. Fozzie usually finishes after Gonzo. If he finishes before, I just take him inside because he has not quite learned self control and Gonzo will allow him to steal his food.. he's a wimpy, insecure little boy.

They both got kibble yesterday, because I was soooo sick and I could not even look at raw meat :p. I feel better today, so I tried to make it up to them with yummy stuff.

I read it on the raw food forum that Sara posted, its on yahoo. One lady just said they weren't good for the dogs, a lady had bought a bunch and was bummed she was told they weren't good for them. It was awhile ago that I read it I cant remember what all she said. If you have fed them to your dogs, then I will give them to mine, I trust you completley. :)

Someone said it on the rawfeeding group? Strange, because everyone on that group advocates feeding whole animals, and a gizzard is part of the animal. Maybe they meant that it's pointless to buy packages of gizzards? I used to buy them in packages but now I only feed them when they come with the bird. I'd rather spend my money on whole birds with gizzards instead of packages of gizzards. You get more bang for you buck that way ;)
